About Traci Warkentin

Our family is spread between Vancouver and Toronto and we wanted a retreat where we could get together, to relax and get away from the city.

Traci Warkentin purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Traci Warkentin chose British Columbia Gulf Islands

Our search for a family retreat was over as soon as we saw this property. Having looked at properties on all of the Gulf Islands, this was the only south-facing, low bank oceanfront/beachfront with expansive views of the water. We knew immediately that it was the one!

What makes this cottage unique

The ocean view is simply stunning and the beach is literally a stone's throw from the house. Whether we are sitting on the deck or in the living room, even at the sink in the kitchen, we can't take our eyes off of it and the abundant wildlife it is home to.

Spectacular site and incredible stay

  • 5 of 5

This was our very first time on Pender Island and we could not have imagined a better place to stay. The cottage is spacious and luxurious, with two large bedrooms, an exceptional and well-appointed kitchen and the crowning glory, a living room and dining room with floor to ceiling windows that looks out over a bay. There's a fireplace in that room which we put to good use and a mesmerizing and breathtaking view. We had planned to do a lot of hikes and stuff around the island for our week there but we could barely tear ourselves away from the beach and bay -- the cottage looks onto the pebble beach which we would walk along for about a half a mile past three other points, all with their own spectacular views. Wildlife -- seals, otters, sea lions, birds of many kinds, and all manner of other creatures -- played in front of us every day. We were there in the early spring/late winter but had great weather so were able to enjoy it despite slightly colder temperatures. The hosts provide every comfort -- there is a great hammock set up in the trees overlooking the bay, and an outdoor furniture set and Adirondack chairs to use. There are beach toys and puzzles and games for kids, a TV hookup with a DVD player, decent wifi and lots of local area maps and books. It's on South Pender so about a thirty minute drive from the ferry terminal and twenty minutes from the nearest grocery and other stores on some fairly windy and at hilly roads. It's best to carry in your food but the set-up is great so cooking there was a real pleasure. They really anticipate all your needs in terms of having all the dishes, cutlery, washing machine and dryer, dishwasher, all the comforts of home and in a really stylish and comfortable place. One of the best vacations we've ever had.

We absolutely loved this place! The cottage sits on a stunning cove and the view is terrific!

Our family had the wonderful opportunity to enjoy a holiday at this property. The cottage has lovely decor, is very clean, has plenty of space, and the beds were comfortable. By day we watched wildlife in the bay, spotting otters and seals popping in and out of the water, a whale, mink, and many species of birds By night we enjoyed playing games and watching movies. There are several good restaurants on the Island, and everyone we met was very friendly. The owner provided us with excellent customer service and we were very happy with our stay overall. We hope to visit sometime in the near future, but hopefully stay longer. I'd like more time in that hammock!

Beautiful location and a beautiful cottage.

  • 4 of 5

Everything went smoothly and the house was as described. Very modern decor and amenities, and the house was very clean. Just a couple of steps to a pebble beach that was a constantly changing scene, with tides coming in and going out, otters and seals visiting, and people (but not too many) wandering along. Orcas and porpoises further out in the strait were a highlight. Lots of nice walks and hikes to be had within a few minutes' drive or walk. Pub at Poets' Cove had fairly good pub fare - not spectacular. Their more expensive dining room had closed for the season. Also the shops and cafe at Hope Bay (on the north island) were great.

Our only comment would be that we were a bit surprised at there being no barbeque, but made do with the broiler in the oven. Perhaps the owners might consider this. Owners were attentive and courteous whenever we were in contact.

I fell in love with Pender

  • 5 of 5

This property is the quintessential 'cottage on the ocean.' It is private but accessible. I loved going on a short drive into town but spent countless hours sitting either in the living room or on the deck, watching the seals, the birds, the sailboats. Everything about this property was ideal for me. I can see myself coming here again and again.

Awesome Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We were at the cottage a few week-ends ago with another couple of friends (4 adults) and had a great time! It was roomy, well equipped and the view was simply amazing. The cottage is well laid out for 2 couples (one bedroom on each side of the house) and has plenty of seats in the living room for everyone to spread around.

We saw a few whales and many seals from the confort of the cottage. We also booked a massage at to Poet's Cove Spa one morning and were the only one there (we had the spa to ourselves, it was so relaxing). The location is a little further away from the main services (gas station, grocery & restaurants) so you might want to plan accordingly. But the view is well worth it!

Gorgeous and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

I hate to write up anything great about this cottage because then everyone will want to stay there and we won't be able to rebook again because it will be full!! Ha, ha. The cottage and the location was simply beautiful. The animal traffic that went by every day was the best entertainment. Deer, woodpeckers, seals, otters, mink, sea birds of every description, and even humpback whales on one particular day. Thank you to Traci and her family for allowing us to stay at the gorgeous Higgs Cottage. We hope to return.
