Nestled among birch trees, 'Alpenhof' has all the amenities of town with a rural setting. This sun-filled cottage on a large lot in Northeast Harbor has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. Hiking trails & Main Street are both a five minute walk from the house.
An Austrian chalet-styled cottage, 'Alpenhof' is surrounded by birch trees on a two-acre lot in the village of Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island, Maine. This sun-filled five bedroom four bathroom home is the rare private house located in town.
From the cottage, you can walk down the driveway and around the corner to watch boats come and go from Somes Sound, or look across the water to Southwest Harbor. The library and Main Street are a five minute walk. In 10 minutes, you can be on one of the numerous in-town trails that will connect you to MDI’s 120 mile network of hiking trails. Or sit on the deck, put your feet up, and let the sound of the trees and the smell of the ocean just melt your worries away.
With multiple seating areas, a deck, and a balcony, all of our guests can find their own space to while away a lazy summer afternoon.
On the first floor are two single bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. A front sitting room has TV/DVD/cable and an MP3-compatible stereo system. The fully-stocked kitchen also includes a washer/dryer. The large living room and dining room runs the width of the house and opens onto the deck. The deck has seating for at least eight and a large umbrella to shade you while you have lunch.
The second floor has a bedroom with two twin beds perfect for friends or siblings to whisper late into the night. It is connected to a second, smaller bedroom by a full bath with two sinks and a shower. The smaller bedroom has one queen bed.
The centerpiece of the second floor is the large master bedroom with king bed, desk, and seating area with sofa and chaise lounge. Windows on three sides flood the room with light. Two closets, one walk-in, and a full private bath are also included.
Alpenhof proved to be an excellent choice for our small family reunion. There are two small downstairs bedrooms each with its private bath. For the two of us that are elderly these were great. The upstairs had a lovely master suite as well as two other bedrooms that shared a large bathroom with shower. I have rented a number of other houses over the years but this one exceeded any of them as far as the kitchen equipment. Whenever we needed a particular gadget, silverware, whatever all we had to do was look and there it was. The support to help with any questions or problems we had was excellent. After a couple of days one of the showers downstairs slowed to a trickle. I called the plumber whose number was listed by the phone and he was there before noon. Unbelievable! At home I usually have to wait a day or two before getting a plumber to come. On the esthetic side Alpenhof is surrounded by a lovely small forest which provides complete privacy. All you have to do is walk to the end of the long driveway and turn right for a few yards to see the water. Northeast Harbor is the ideal location for a vacation stay. It's only a twenty minute drive to the shops and restaurants of Bar Harbor. There are a few shops and restaurants in the village itself but if you are in the mood for more activity Bar Harbor is very close. Acadia National Park is also very close and provides many hiking paths and beautiful views wherever you drive or walk. We stayed at Alpenhof the first two weeks of June and enjoyed the cool weather since all of our group came from hot climates ranging from Phoenix to New Orleans. It was hard to leave. Everyone one of us would happily return in a heartbeat. Last but not least the owners were very easy to work with and quickly responded to every question I had about Alpenhof including detailed directions for getting there from the airport. All in all I highly recommend Alpenhof to anyone seeking a comfortable home in which to enjoy the beautiful rocky coast of Maine.
A group of 6 hikers just returned home to Chicago from staying at Alpenhof and we all agreed that it was wonderful place to stay in Northeast Harbor. It is a lovely large home that is clean with beautiful grounds, very comfortable beds, centrally located, large deck and has all the comforts of home. The last night there we all sat around and tried to think of things that would have make our experience better and we couldn't think of anything. The owners, Joan and Brett, were wonderful with directions, recommendations on sights to see and restaurants they thought were good. We did eat a Sips in Southwest Harbor and felt the ambiance was wonderful and the food okay. Try to eat lunch outside at Jordan's Pond overlooking the pond. It truly is a beautiful setting! Do not miss Ocean Drive Trail...it is gorgeous and really gives you the feeling of being on the coast of Maine. I gave Alpenhof 5 stars because it really is a 5 star VRBO and would HIGHLY recommend Alpenhof to anyone planning a trip to Maine. If you rent from Joan and Britt I hope you have as wonderful time as we did!
We stayed at Alpenhof in Jul 2015 and had a great time. We were an extended family with older children/teens, and the set up with 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms was great. The deck was secluded and relaxing. The house is in Northeast Harbor, and you can walk into town in about 10 mins, which gave the older kids freedom to be on their own. Also for the teens would never survive without wifi which is included.
It is about 15 mins into Bar Harbor by car and close to many hiking trails. Acadia is beautiful. We all had a great time!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Alpenhof! The home resembled a nicely-secluded Swiss chalet, yet was in the heart of Mt. Desert. We have five children and everyone had plenty of space though out this warm and inviting home. We were able to cook and enjoy family meals in the dining room and on the deck. Then we could watch movies together in the evening. The house itself was located in a central location of Mt. Desert which enabled us to easily drive to Acadia National Park and surrounding attractions. Without hesitation, we would go back to Alpenhof in a heartbeat!
