In the Owner's Words: Hale Surf's Up is one of our primary homes. We live here many months of the year. We welcome guests who will enjoy the beautiful ocean views and original artwork that make our home a special Hawaiian getaway.
Greg Gilliom purchased this estate in 2002
We purchased this property because it is very unique, on the point at the ocean's edge. We have 17 palm trees on the point, which gently sway in the trade winds. It is the only property with a private sandy area within the Naupaka hedge, providing much needed privacy from the public walking along the beach.
The Sounds!! The back lanai of Hale Surf's Up is 50' from the ocean. Many homes say they are oceanfront, but they may be 1000' or more from the ocean. The soothing sounds of gentle ocean waves at Hale Surf's Up will be music to your ears. When the whales smack their tales in the winter, you hear them like they are right next door.
Having rented homes across the country for vacations our criteria for a 5 star review is quite high. This property deserves every accolade and exceeds the expectations for the most seasoned traveler. Yes, its on the beach and the furnishing are of the highest quality. However, what creates its magic is the privacy it affords both within the dwelling and outside. Our stay included 2 couples and a teen. The bedrooms each afford privacy while the kitchen, great room and outside create the perfect environment for gathering. The Fairmont is truly next door but we felt removed from the hotel. Mauna Lani Resort is but a short stroll along the beach front trail. We had no issues snorkeling and enjoying the water directly in front of the property. Day trips are facilitated through easy access to the main roads and the airport is a very easy 20 minutes. Groceries, shopping and restaurants are all within a few minute drive on the resort property. Every imaginable kitchen appliance and utensil is at arms reach. We wanted for absolutely nothing. The owner is friendly and accommodating with an approach that leaves you feeling as though they truly do want to share their paradise with you. The local property manager imparts a true Aloha impression and was helpful in obtaining pre arrival provisions and assisting with recommendations.
Our one and only disappointment was that we had to leave and could not move in permanently. We will be back to this property and can not imagine staying any where else the next time we do the "Big Island"
What an amazing property in a fantastic location. We had 2 families with 4 kids for a week. Lots of entertainment for the kids and plenty of relaxing spots for the adults. The Kona beer on tap is pretty nice as well. We would definitely recommend and hope to come back ourselves! Mahalo!
Perfect location, over the top home, with all the amenities. Never wanted to leave. Landscaping and pool are simply stunning. Evening sunsets were spectacular. Owner & property manager are the best we've experienced. On their recommendation, we had a catered dinner at Hale Surf's Up, which was phenomenal. Norio's at the Orchid was an excellent dining experience as well. We thoroughly enjoyed the adjacent beach at the Fairmont Orchid (within 50 yards), the beach walkways, the Owner's Beach, the Fitness Center, the Black Sand Beach and the tide pools at the Mauna Lani. Totally relaxing venue. Too spoiled now to go back to a hotel/resort.
This is the most amazing house I ever rented in Hawaii. The location is stellar and so close to the best amenities at Mauna Lani Resort. I have to say, when you walk into this house, you may never leave. The interiors are beautiful and very comfortable. The exterior is lush and completely private. Everything you need is just steps away – the beach, the sound of the waves, your own pool, spa, pool table, Media Room, there is even an outdoor bar! We ate in several nights using the BBQ by the pool, which was totally relaxing and fun for our family. We can't wait to get back next year.
We have stayed at several high-end Mauna Lani properties, but this home is now at the top of our list! The house is outfitted with a very complete kitchen as well as outdoor grill. We cooked in far more than expected because of the amenities were so convenient and the indoor/outdoor living space was so spacious and relaxing! Hearing and seeing the ocean and watching the sunsets is incredible! The kids were at the beach, in the pool all day! Our children (ages 12- 16) loved having their own space and the layout of the home is fantastic and provides space for everyone 'under one roof'. We would recommend and hope to come back ourselves! Mahalo
This year we rented this beautiful home for a 2-week stay. It is in perfect condition (actually more beautiful than the photos) and we opted for daily housekeeping by a reliable, efficient and friendly staffer. The owner is extraordinarily helpful and accommodating, which made the relationship (and arranging our vacation logistics) extremely satisfying. The home is located right on the beach. The estate and grounds are very large and you cannot get any close to the beach! Our family of 6 has been coming to the Kohala Coast for nearly 30 years and this was another great trip, and we will stay again at this luxury estate. Bear in mind this is an expensive proposition and while there are clearly less-costly ways to experience the coast at least for this family, this estate, the service and the attention of ownership and staff exceeded our highest expectations.
