Enjoy the ever changing beauty of the Malaspina Straight and nearby Texada Island from this recently built off-the-grid cottage. This cottage was carefully integrated into a 100 foot stretch of marine shoreline, maintaining shoreline vegetation and maximizing wildlife use. Bald eagles roost immediately above the cottage and fish in the bay below that hosts a myriad of seabirds as well as dolphins, otters and occasional orcas. Access is available to a rocky shore below, where you can swim in the pleasant bay waters. The 1800 square foot cottage on 3 acres offers two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, each of which has access to a deck overlooking the ocean. There is a California king sized bed in the master and queen size in the second bedroom - both bedrooms have their own bathrooms. The living area is open and well designed combining a large modern kitchen with the adjacent dining and living room space. The inland side of the house offers a large brick patio that is sunny and peaceful, and looks out at magnificent Doug firs and madrone trees. Hiking or mountain biking is available immediately up Middlepoint Road into Crown forest land, as well as numerous other hikes to the north and south in adjacent provincial parks such as picturesque Francis Point or the famous Skookumchuck rapids. A well stocked market, pharmacy, as well as restaurants and coffee houses are located just 3 km north of the cottage in Pender Harbor.
Originally from NSW, Australia, I have lived primarily along the West coast of the US. My wife and two boys moved to the Pacific Northwest over twenty years ago. As an aquatic biologist I have worked to protect and restore both freshwater and marine ecosystems, particularly in the Puget Sound area.
Stephen Stanley purchased this cottage in 2005
This property was magical to us, since the marine and shoreline environment was so rich and visually stunning. We always found that we could relax here and feel truly re-invigorated when we left.
Extremely peaceful with essentially none of the urban noise that one takes for granted in our daily lives. The skies are incredibly clear at night and you can see the milky way which is not possible along most stretches of the west coast. Bird life is abundant and marine intertidal area is healthy. Outside of storm events, coastal waters are relatively calm with few waves, making it ideal for kayaking and swimming.
We had the pleasure of a long and memorable stay at Stanley Cottage Green Retreat with our parents joining us. The setting is truly idyllic with an addictive pull to the generous outdoor deck space with the sounds of water lapping below, intermittent boats and tugs in the horizon and some of the most breathtaking sunsets ever experienced. We applaud Stephen's commitment to conservation and never felt constrained or limited in our normal routines due to the abundance of Sunshine during our stay. As culinary adventurers we found the kitchen to be as well equipped, if not better than our own in some areas. The local IGA and the butcher housed in a small market in the small hub of commerce in Madeira Park are easily accessible and the Sechelt Saturday Farmers Market is a must for locally grown organics and the only true European style baked goods. Hiking opportunities abound and the cottage is positioned for easy access to a host of outdoor active pleasures! We can only hope that we will have the opportunity to return to this memorable piece of paradise yet again!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Stanley Cottage. It is a well designed, modern eco cottage with all necessary amenities in a very special location overlooking the Pacific. It is the perfect place to base yourself when exploring BC’s Sunshine Coast, and to come back to in the evening to unwind, read books, sleep well and wake up to the sound of the ocean. The owners are extremely helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this cottage.
My husband, daughter and myself unfortunately only booked a 3 day stay at Stephen's VRBO. In hind site - I wish we had stayed a full week! Stephen calls it a "cottage", but it is indeed an entire luxury vacation "home". It is truly a piece of heaven - offering a complete mental health break from the usual hustle and bustle of day to day living.
We had never experienced "living off the grid" prior to our stay, however it is obvious that the benefits far out way any inconveniences. Yes - "city folk" really can live without a microwave or wifi!
Our only comment, would be to post a note letting renters know about the challenging private road leading into the residence. We were driving a SUV and therefore had plenty of clearance...but I am not so confident that a small sedan would have been so lucky.
Would we stay again - absolutely!!
Thanks for sharing it with us!!

The pictures are great but the actual experience is a wow factor! The place is very clean and comfortable, with everything needed.
Bring your own water and coffee bodum.
Overall, we had a great weekend getaway at the property and everything was fantastic. The neighbors were really nice and they had 2 friendly dogs that roamed the area. They were friendly but I'd be careful with small kids as they may get knocked down and etc...
We couldn't find a coffee maker and be prepared that there is no wifi at the house.
Overall though, we would highly recommend the property as the house and views are really nice!
The pictures at VRBO don’t lie and the reality even surpasses the pictures. It is difficult to reproduce feelings in pictures and it is the feeling of being out in the nature which so much beautiful space all around you that makes this place so special. So rent it and experience it for yourself! You won’t be disappointed.
The house (it is much more than a cabin or a cottage) sits right at the oceanfront and has a very large deck with the most beautiful views to the west overlocking the sea, some islands and the adjacent shoreline. We spent each day outside until the setting sun painted marvelous colors at the sky.
The deck is equipped with a lot of high quality furniture and every room has its own door out to the deck so you can get in and out from the deck from wherever you are. This is very comfortable because the house and the rooms in it are quite large. The kitchen is well equipped and has almost everything you need apart from appliances that use a lot of electric energy: there is no toaster, microwave, coffee machine or dishwasher.
The living/dining room furniture as well as that in the two bedrooms again is of high quality and there is a large flat screen TV with a brilliant picture and several movie-channels like HBO. In addition there is a DVD-player and some 90 DVDs to watch.
Stephen, the owner, calls this a green house meaning the use of water and electricity is restricted to what is locally available from the well and the solar panel. My wife and I enjoyed a lot of sunshine while being here so there was always enough electric energy for the two of us.
So far there are no curtains at all the windows so if you are here in summer expect to wake up from the sunshine in the morning. That was OK with us, but having no curtains at the bathroom windows made us feel uncomfortable at night when the electric lighting was on. Stephen wrote to us that he will consider placing curtains in the future.
Thank you Stephen,
we liked it a lot to spent a part of our summer holiday in your beautiful place and if we can we will be back some day.
