Enjoy the ever changing beauty of the Malaspina Straight and nearby Texada Island from this recently built off-the-grid cottage. This cottage was carefully integrated into a 100 foot stretch of marine shoreline, maintaining shoreline vegetation and maximizing wildlife use. Bald eagles roost immediately above the cottage and fish in the bay below that hosts a myriad of seabirds as well as dolphins, otters and occasional orcas. Access is available to a rocky shore below, where you can swim in the pleasant bay waters. The 1800 square foot cottage on 3 acres offers two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, each of which has access to a deck overlooking the ocean. There is a California king sized bed in the master and queen size in the second bedroom - both bedrooms have their own bathrooms. The living area is open and well designed combining a large modern kitchen with the adjacent dining and living room space. The inland side of the house offers a large brick patio that is sunny and peaceful, and looks out at magnificent Doug firs and madrone trees. Hiking or mountain biking is available immediately up Middlepoint Road into Crown forest land, as well as numerous other hikes to the north and south in adjacent provincial parks such as picturesque Francis Point or the famous Skookumchuck rapids. A well stocked market, pharmacy, as well as restaurants and coffee houses are located just 3 km north of the cottage in Pender Harbor.

About Stephen Stanley
Originally from NSW, Australia, I have lived primarily along the West coast of the US. My wife and two boys moved to the Pacific Northwest over twenty years ago. As an aquatic biologist I have worked to protect and restore both freshwater and marine ecosystems, particularly in the Puget Sound area.
Stephen Stanley purchased this Cottage in 2005
Why Stephen Stanley chose Sunshine Coast B
This property was magical to us, since the marine and shoreline environment was so rich and visually stunning. We always found that we could relax here and feel truly re-invigorated when we left.
What makes this Cottage unique
Extremely peaceful with essentially none of the urban noise that one takes for granted in our daily lives. The skies are incredibly clear at night and you can see the milky way which is not possible along most stretches of the west coast. Bird life is abundant and marine intertidal area is healthy. Outside of storm events, coastal waters are relatively calm with few waves, making it ideal for kayaking and swimming.

Weekend in Halfmoon bay
We had a great weekend at Halfmoon bay. The home is well laid out with a well equipped kitchen. We toured around the area during the day but spent the evenings preparing dinner with good friends and relaxing.
The view is amazing and we tried to spend as much time on the deck as possible. It’s a very peaceful place and we will definitely go back for a longer stay.
Great location for adventurous types
We had a great few days at the off the grid cabin. Getting to the cabin was not hard, but you do need to follow the given directions carefully - a little bit of guess and check there. I would not recommend arriving at night. And take the parking warnings seriously. If you continue right to the very end of the drive (which is a single lane dirt track), you might well high-center your vehicle on the way back out. This actually means you have a fair ways, perhaps as much as a city block, to carry your luggage/supplies in - pack light, .
You can not drink the well water due to high arsenic levels, something which could be spelled out more clearly in the description. Once informed we had no issues as we brought along our full wilderness camping water reservoir which was plenty for our stay. A large multi gallon jug of water from the local IGA was also supplied, but we didn't need that. If you go that route you will need to be able to get it in the water dispenser which is a simple gravity feed reservoir. Had no issues with power or hot water, sufficient of both, and if it were not for the large solar panel out front, and all the warning notes in the bathrooms (and the cute mini sand-clocks in the showers), we would not have known we were off the grid! The cabin is very spacious, the beds and couches comfortable, and the linens and towels were clean if a little worn. The kitchen was well equipped, although the dishwasher broke for the guests before us, and the fridge has seen better days.
Of course the reason to stay here is the amazing views out over the water, the super large decks, and the drop dead gorgeous sunsets. I wish we had had another day so we could have spent more time just relaxing. There is no internet which is a real draw back for travelers new to the area as we were, but I used one of the numerous guide books for planning trips. The movie collection is pretty extensive but mostly older movies, and R-rated. Not so good for families.
The only quibble I have with the description was that the unit is listed with a washer/dryer, but a note at the cabin said it could only be used by guests staying 5 days or more. As we were on a camping/cabining road trip this was a bit of annoyance as we really could have done with using it as part of our 3 day stay, but abided by the rule.
All in all a lovely place, have fun.
Beautiful off-the-grid spacious cabin with great ocean view location
Absolutely gorgeous setting with a large deck overlooking the ocean. 180-degree fantastic sunsets over the ocean. There are rock stairs down to the house, a down-hill walk from the parking area and a scramble down to the ocean, so not ideal for the mobility-challenged. We launched our canoe and kayaks in nearby Madeira Park and had a very interesting paddle around Pender Harbour / Garden Bay. This is a solar-powered facility, which makes one feel very ecologically aware and virtuous ;) Be aware that this results in some restrictions as to power-use (for example, no early-morning showers). Rooms were large, the kitchen was well-equipped and the furniture was comfortable. We enjoyed our two-night stay very much!
Great stay on the Sunshine Coast
Beautiful home with a well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and spacious bathrooms .
Private setting and views across the strait that capture you all day.
Close to restaurants in Pender Harbour.
Ocean swimming a bit chilly but worth it !
Stephen (owner) is very helpful and responds promptly to inquiries.
This is a beautiful house in a beautiful place, and we were very sad when it was time to leave.
We and our children spent a lot of happy time at the beach just below the house. There are many things to do nearby, and we'd like to come again another time and stay for longer.
The house is very well equipped, with everything we needed - in particular, the kitchen was a pleasure to cook in, and the beds were very comfortable.
Lovely off the grid home with beautiful ocean views!
This spacious well equipped home has beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding green hills. Very relaxing to sit or eat out on the deck! We found everything we needed and our young adult daughter was even able to scramble down the rocks to swim.
We enjoyed swimming and hiking at Smugglers cove park. The beds were wonderfully comfortable! Slept like a baby. Highly recommended!
