About Katharine de Baun

Hello, I'm a busy Mom of four kids ages 18 through 11 recently transplanted from central New Jersey to Oregon! My past job experiences have included teaching community college and co-founding one of the first parenting websites, Moms Online. Over the last ten years I've gotten involved in managing rental properties here in NJ/PA, volunteering (Girl Scouts and PTO), and working as Editor in Chief for fitsmi.

Katharine de Baun purchased this house in 2005

Why Katharine de Baun chose South Central Colorado

My husband and I bought this house as a bit of a lark - it was featured in a NYT piece in the Friday 'Escapes' section on Feng Shui homes. My mother-in-law was increasingly unable to travel and it just made more and more sense as we talked about it: why don't we buy it so we have a place for all of us to stay when we visit her? I did a little research about VRBO homes in the area and, at least at the time, there wasn't much competition (there's more now but we're still doing okay). We set up the house to please ourselves and our guests at the same time. It was a lot of work, and a lot of fun too.

What makes this house unique

We love, love, love the view at all hours, from watching the sun come up over the mountains early in the morning to dusk shadows and then sometimes a beautiful moon over the pass. My husband and I also love walking the Mt. Esther trail every morning we can (the head of the trail is a 10-minute walk away). When we're at the house, we enjoy complete privacy and the sense that we've gotten away from it all, but we also love the convenience of driving 20 minutes or less to many shops/attractions, from Colorado Springs to Manitou Springs, Woodland Park, Green Mountain Falls, Cave of the Winds, the local Rock Shop (our kids take forever to spend $5 in there!), Pike's Peak cog train, and more.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family had such a wonderful time in your beautiful home in the mountains. Everything was just perfect the entire stay. During our stay, we went to the Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, Olympic Training Center, and Denver, but wherever we went, this was always a wonderful place to come back to every night. We all enjoyed Esther's Trail and we waited in anticipation of the mysterious bear! Last night htough, we found the garbage can dumped over, so we assumed he had come for a visit. Tomorrow we will venture home to Phoenix - 110 degrees!

Loved the views!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying here! It's a great central location- plenty of things to do within a 20 mile radius. We were able to hit Manitou Springs, Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods, Wolf Center, Cliff Dwellings, cave of the winds, pikes peak, and many more in a 5 day span.

The road is quite steep and long going up to the cabin so if you are wishing to walk straight from the cabin this might not be the best option but if you are looking for solidarity and great views I would highly recommend.

Love the house and the location!

  • 4 of 5

The 8 of us (me, husband, 4 sons and 2 girlfriends) rented the house from March 22-26th, although we did end up leaving on the 25th because of a blizzard that was coming and worry about getting snowed in again. We were completely snowbound on the 23rd and didn't even leave the house until afternoon to get food! The house itself is wonderful, great big bedrooms with plenty of beds and baths. The beds were very comfortable, and there were ample linens and towels for our stay. The view is magnificent and the house itself was immaculately clean and tidy for our stay. We did not turn on the tv at all, so we can't judge the tv or reception at all!

Drawbacks: The kitchen area is very small which is hard because that means only one person can do the cooking. There is not enough counter space or cabinet space, so our groceries ended up all over the counter and windowsill. There were not enough pots and pans, certainly not enough big pots to make soup on the day we were snowbound so that was a problem, as well as a lack of wooden spoons for stirring as well as serving spoons. The house was warm enough with the exception of the downstairs living room which did have an extra heater but it did not seem to work at all. Keeping the house warm enough for the downstairs to be warm meant the master bedroom was too hot. It was cramped in the upstairs living room because there isn't enough seating for 8, and 2 more chairs would really be nice.

Overall we loved the house even though the driveway and streets up to the driveway were heart-attack inducing because of their steepness and the very sharp curves. We loved that the house was so clean and tidy because we have had bad experiences in that regard. We loved loved loved Teddy and Lilly, the neighbor dogs, who came to visit whom we lavished attention on! The view is magnificent, the house was fabulous and the snow was just the topping on the cake! The drawbacks (most of them) are very easily remedied and the house is so wonderful I feel sure we will want to stay here again, maybe in summer!

I would have happily paid a little more to have a supply of rock salt and/or cat litter to spread on the driveway since 6 of us spend over an hour trying to dig the driveway out (with teh 2 plastic snow shovels) enough to get the car up the driveway and get more food. That isn't something we have a problem with in Arkansas so we were not prepared or knew we needed to purchase cat litter or anything like that

As Adverised - Good location for Family get-together

  • 4 of 5

Property was as advertised. Clean, good location. Definitely need 4 wheel drive in the winter! Plenty of space for our gathering of 6. Close to many attractions. Neighbors dog came to visit our dogs daily which was fun.

We stayed in and cooked most meals. Kitchen had most basic spices and condiments which were appreciated. Knives were dull (aren't they always?) but we did find a knife sharpener which helped. The local Safeway gives away knives with purchase so we left a good one behind. Other kitchen tools (cheese grater, blender, food processor) could use an upgrade, but all sufficed.

Beds, linens, and towels were all fine. Heating and plumbing all worked well. Overall good value.
