Nestled in the trees overlooking stately mountain views, we are pleased to present a very special property - affectionately known as “Journey’s End.” A charming, private and exquisitely-furnished lodge located about two miles from downtown Highlands, this gracious property is uniquely situated in the lovely “Falling Waters” community – where nine upscale homes share this fifty acre, peaceful place – all accompanied by an abundance of majestic trees and varied wildlife. Our private development includes a stone gateway, free-flowing clear water streams, two waterfalls, and immense tranquility as you continue on to this enchanted retreat.
Extremely private, yet not too secluded, Journey's End is a welcoming place. Upon entrance to the home the Grand Room, Gallery, Gathering Room, Master Bedroom and spacious back deck provide panoramic views of the mountainous terrain. The adjacent, well-appointed kitchen provides all of the amenities that support gourmet cooking. The common areas encourage great entertaining, whether for couples who wish to just escape from it all in a romantic setting to a family gathering suitable for both adults and children. Supremely distinctive when compared to other properties, there are three independently-placed master suites, each with their own well-appointed king-size bed and private bath. All three are unique, each sumptuous and splendid in appeal.
As evidenced in the photo’s, Journey's End is furnished in an interesting African theme - where the animal pen/inks share this grand place with authentic African wood carvings, a variety of eclectic art glass, and other gracious design elements evocative of a true mountain lodge – such as soaring timber-framed ceilings, natural woodwork, and glorious western-facing mountain views that embrace the setting sun. As we enjoy wildlife in all of its' splendor, we harbor no stuffed animals or endangered skins here! The Gathering Room is appointed with three full-size sofa's that enable viewing of a very large 55" wide-screen flat television, perfect for sporting or other entertainment and accompanying gleeful repartee. Or, let the kids simply enjoy the other 60' wide-screen located in the large Loft - perfect for movies. Also provided is wireless internet access, and continental-US long distance telephone service. The back deck creates an entertainment area for all guests to share in nature's glory, while the large natural charcoal grill w/smoker can also be used for that long-awaited repast – served at the Grand Room dining table for eight, or the sturdy outdoor picnic table that easily seats twelve.
Care for an adventure? Visit our local NC waterfalls: Glen Falls (difficult descent!), Bridal Veil Falls (easy access!), Dry Falls (amazing walk under!), Bust-Your-Butt Falls (a place for kids to cool off, yet can be turbulent and dangerous after rainstorms!), and the magnificent Cullasaja Gorge Falls (absolutely inspiring!); each are "Kodak Moments!" Consider a hike along many outdoor trails that surround Highlands - Whiteside Mountain is a must - midway between Highlands, NC and Cashiers, NC - with a very modest ascent to a panoramic view that will be long-remembered; head north of Cashiers to enjoy Lake Glenville (the highest freshwater lake east of the Mississippi River), where there is a public swimming park, as well as public boat launch sites. Continue north midway between Cashiers, NC and Sylva, NC to discover Judaculla rock - a remarkable curvilinear soapstone rock with petroglyphs that is believed to have been carved prior to the Cherokee Indian presence in the area.
Want to see sights closer to Highlands? Visit the Highlands Nature Center; drive through the vintage covered wooden bridge at The Bascom art center and enjoy their varied exhibits; swim in the new Jr. Olympic-size pool (now open year-round!), play tennis or shoot hoops at the Highlands Recreation Center (skateboard ramps are currently being constructed!); spend time at Founder's Park (downtown) to simply relax, feed the ducks/geese at Harris Lake, enjoy the varied opportunities for food lovers!
But wait, there's more.......Try a day trip to Cherokee, NC, home of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (a tribal sovereign nation that functions under the laws of the Federal Government), to experience the true culture of our native friends; visit the Visitor's Center (Oconaluftee) at the NC entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, immediately adjacent to Cherokee, where you can also view the interesting Mountain Farm Museum and nearby Mingus Mill. Have a hankering to travel higher than the 4,118 foot Highlands plateau?...continue to Balsam Mountain, along the Blue Ridge Parkway, to view vistas as high as 6,410 feet.....not high enough?.... travel to Mount Mitchell State Park, Burnsville, NC (north of Asheville, NC), to reach the summit at 6,684 feet, which is the highest point east of the Mississippi River! Take a drive to ride the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad departing from Bryson City, NC. Still want more fun? Visit Tallulah Gorge State Park in Tallulah Falls, GA....view the breathtaking gorge (2 miles long and 1,000 foot deep!) from high above, or take the challenging 615(?) step descent to the river itself during which you will cross an amazing pedestrian suspension bridge. To be sure, there is much to do and see nearby!
Browse and shop to your heart's content in downtown Highlands! Our shopping experience is oriented to both the resourceful and the opulent; from hiking shoes to antiques, t-shirts to leather handbags, artwork to furniture, we have it all in Highlands! Our many eating establishments provide for great, modest-priced meals: from ice cream cones and sandwiches to those who seek the unique, gastronomical delight of several five-star restaurants. Consider also embarking on a short drive to Cashiers for more shopping, Glenville for a glorious lake view (swimming, boating and picnics), or just enjoy a refreshing stroll in our very own Falling Waters neighborhood – perhaps to include a picnic down by the modest streams and beautiful waterfall, or a quiet walkabout through the attractive development. To be sure, you won’t be disappointed!
Let there be no doubt that “Journey’s End” is a place to call home, a well-appointed lodge to enjoy, and a welcoming respite from the busy urban life! We welcome you, esteemed guests, to our Highlands mountain paradise!
1) We can accommodate less than a 3-night/4-night minimum stay, but at a higher rate than the quoted nightly rate due to pro-rated laundry costs, etc. Please inquire with the owner.
2) The property sleeps 6 (2 each in king size beds), but there is ample room for more - on sofa's, sleeping bags on the floor, or even consider bringing sleeping bags and a pup tent for the kids to be placed on the back deck!
3) We offer air conditioning throughout the entire home, unlike many mountain homes in the area. Although the mountain elevation offers cooler summer temperatures, we also experience relatively high humidity - thus, a/c provides both temperature and humidity control.
4) Small well-behaved dog considered, but requires prior approval by the owner. If approved, the Pet Fee offsets the cost related to carpet cleaning and removal of pet dander.

Why Bruce E. Kibler chose Highlands
The photo's tell it all: Clean, spacious and quiet accommodations provide for a unique experience in a very private setting. Whether securing Journey's End as a romantic getaway for two, a retreat for friends and family, or a respite for several adults to simply relax from the hustle and bustle of humanity, Journey's End is a welcoming environment that offers great entertainment possibilities and that often elusive romantic setting.
What makes this House unique
A mountain lodge filled with charm and character; spacious and evocative, simply a magnificent property to use as a base camp while exploring the seemingly endless opportunities in and around the western North Carolina mountains. We are nestled in the trees with a beautiful, western-facing mountain view. Due to our elevation at 4,100 ft. above sea level, mosquito's are virtually non-existent - and quiet solitude is assured because we have no nearby neighbors. Conveniently located (downtown Highlands is just 2-1/2 miles away!) and surrounded by abundant foliage, our clean, spacious and comfortable accommodations are the perfect setting to ensure that Journey's End will be long remembered as a delightful vacation destination!

Wonderful, Relaxing, Restful, Pampered
Came together with several sets of friends at Journey’s Rest to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. We couldn’t have asked for more. The moonlight and breeze through the windows at night were a treasure as was the view from the back deck. The house is immaculate, well furnished, well stocked, and includes many high end touches not found in other VRBO rentals. Everyone loved the goodies and special extras the owner left for us! We felt well cared for and special....pampered. The owner is very easy to work with. We had no issues or need to call him once we all arrived, but know he would have been super responsive if the need had arisen. There is a reason this home has so many 5 star reviews. It is a gem.
Dawn and Richard, what a wonderful tribute to thoroughly enjoying your 20th wedding anniversary at Journey's End! When it's all said and done upon the completion of our life's efforts on this 3rd rock from the sun, what remains as the most joyful moments of our lives is having spent quality time with friends and family. Our best wishes for safe travel in your future vacation endeavors!
The home is beautiful and spacious .
The owner was a pleasure to work with. The little extras were a nice touch. We were in town for our sons wedding. The home was the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle and relax.
Thank you, Teresa, for the kind feedback regarding your recent stay at Journey's End. There's no doubt that your wedding party experienced a very busy time due to all of the nearby festivities!
We first chose 'Trail's End' based upon text and photos. We were very pleasantly surprised to find our expectations were exceeded. Photos do not provide justice to this well cared for and well equipped home. It is minutes from downtown and while very private, it is secluded, but not isolated. The kitchen has every thing you need to rustle up a meal; or dinner is short drive away. We found the beds to be very comfortable (similar to our Heavenly Beds at home). The bathrooms are very supplied and cozy. . There is basically no amenity you need to be comfortable but 'in the mountains'. We experienced unusually heavy rain our arrival and low temps after. The home is tight, no drafts, and the heat/AC system functions flawlessly. The interior has a unique design. The kitchen/ dining is separate from the gathering room and each bedroom is offset. And at the same time each is closely adjoined. One can read, cook or play a game and still be close. And the porch! Great sunset views and the dark skies/stars are awesome. Bruce, our contact, was always available and provided loads of local info. We can recommend 'Trail's End' without exception.
Your kind, considerate, and informative review of "Journey's End" is much appreciated John and Pam! Yes, it may seem that we are at Trails End, what with the quiet privacy that we offer here at our Falling Waters development. Just a very comfortable property with unique features that indeed sets us apart from our rental competition.
As our tree's leaves and flowering plant's are once again about to emerge into the bountiful flora and fauna that will soon surrounds us, it is refreshing to know that our esteemed guests find our hospitality so enchanting. May your fond memories of "Journey's End" include the serene nature of our environment and the enlightenment brought forth by your mesmerizing stargazing!
This is by far the BEST Vrbo I have ever visited!! Very clean!
From the moment we arrived I felt comfortable and knew we would have a pleasant stay. The Welcome Basket is a nice touch. You can tell the owner takes pride in making sure his guests few welcomed and have an enjoyable experience. It was my birthday and the owner went out of his way to get us a delicious slice of cake and amazing candles (which by the way I have that same candle at my home, it is my favorite scent). This home is spacious, beautifully decorated and I will recommend to many.
Thank you, Kimberly and Josh, for such a positive guest review of Journey's End. The opportunity to have been selected for your birthday weekend getaway is very flattering. I'm so thankful for your patronage! Enjoy the pine-scented candles, with our compliments - it is our hope that the fragrance will bring back many great memories of your time well spent at Journey's End!!
Me, my wife and 3 daughters spent several nights here. We consider ourselves to be fairly "high-maintenance" :), and Bruce did not disappoint! The house is nestled towards the top of the mountain offering spectacular mountain views. Not another house in sight! The accommodations rivaled that of a 5-star hotel! Everything was very clean and very very comfortable. Bruce had step-by-step instructions on everything from how to play the many board games he offered, to the best hikes in town, to the best restaurants in the area! Our experience at "Journey's End" was one of the best family trips we've had, due in large part to Bruce's hospitality. We will be back, for sure!!! Thank you Bruce.
Your kind and considerate comments are much appreciated, Jennifer and Steven. Yes, it's true that we earnestly endeavor to exceed our vacation Guests expectations by our attention to detail, quality of our furnished amenities, as well as offering unexpected variety in the complementary Welcome Package items selected for each Guest. All of these considerations are integral to our Journey's End business plan as we strive to excel in our Highlands vacation rental marketplace. We wish you many years of fond memories of your time well-spent at Journey's End!
Great Family Vacation
My family really enjoyed our stay at Journey’s End. Bruce, the property owner, put together a wonderful welcome basket (and some well-received bottles of wine) for us. My girls loved all of the games and movie options, while my husband and I loved the spectacular views and cool decor. The location is perfect, convenient to town, hiking and waterfalls. We loved it so much that we extended our stay by an extra day, which Bruce was kind enough to accommodate. You won’t be sorry you stayed here; we plan to come back...
Greetings Kristi and Peter! My kind regards to your gracious comments and sentimental thoughts. There is indeed much to do here in the mountains, and I'm very pleased that your family enjoyed their time at Journey's End!
Attractions: autumn foliage, ponds, streams, waterfalls, sightseeing, nature center, art gallery/museum, live theatre, and of course retail therapy!
