Welcome to Journey's End:
Nestled in the trees overlooking stately mountain views, we are pleased to present a very special property - affectionately known as “Journey’s End.” A charming, private and exquisitely-furnished lodge located about two miles from downtown Highlands, this gracious property is uniquely situated in the lovely “Falling Waters” community – where nine upscale homes share this fifty acre, peaceful place – all accompanied by an abundance of majestic trees and varied wildlife. Our private development includes a stone gateway, free-flowing clear water streams, two waterfalls, and immense tranquility as you continue on to this enchanted retreat.
Extremely private, yet not too secluded, Journey's End is a welcoming place. Upon entrance to the home the Grand Room, Gallery, Gathering Room, Master Bedroom and spacious back deck provide panoramic views of the mountainous terrain. The adjacent, well-appointed kitchen provides all of the amenities that support gourmet cooking. The common areas encourage great entertaining, whether for couples who wish to just escape from it all in a romantic setting to a family gathering suitable for both adults and children. Supremely distinctive when compared to other properties, there are three independently-placed master suites, each with their own well-appointed king-size bed and private bath. All three are unique, each sumptuous and splendid in appeal.
As evidenced in the photo’s, Journey's End is furnished in an interesting African theme - where the animal pen/inks share this grand place with authentic African wood carvings, a variety of eclectic art glass, and other gracious design elements evocative of a true mountain lodge – such as soaring timber-framed ceilings, natural woodwork, and glorious western-facing mountain views that embrace the setting sun. As we enjoy wildlife in all of its' splendor, we harbor no stuffed animals or endangered skins here! The Gathering Room is appointed with three full-size sofa's that enable viewing of a very large 55" wide-screen flat television, perfect for sporting or other entertainment and accompanying gleeful repartee. Or, let the kids simply enjoy the other 60' wide-screen located in the large Loft - perfect for movies. Also provided is wireless internet access, and continental-US long distance telephone service. The back deck creates an entertainment area for all guests to share in nature's glory, while the large natural charcoal grill w/smoker can also be used for that long-awaited repast – served at the Grand Room dining table for eight, or the sturdy outdoor picnic table that easily seats twelve.
Care for an adventure? Visit our local NC waterfalls: Glen Falls (difficult descent!), Bridal Veil Falls (easy access!), Dry Falls (amazing walk under!), Bust-Your-Butt Falls (a place for kids to cool off, yet can be turbulent and dangerous after rainstorms!), and the magnificent Cullasaja Gorge Falls (absolutely inspiring!); each are "Kodak Moments!" Consider a hike along many outdoor trails that surround Highlands - Whiteside Mountain is a must - midway between Highlands, NC and Cashiers, NC - with a very modest ascent to a panoramic view that will be long-remembered; head north of Cashiers to enjoy Lake Glenville (the highest freshwater lake east of the Mississippi River), where there is a public swimming park, as well as public boat launch sites. Continue north midway between Cashiers, NC and Sylva, NC to discover Judaculla rock - a remarkable curvilinear soapstone rock with petroglyphs that is believed to have been carved prior to the Cherokee Indian presence in the area.
Want to see sights closer to Highlands? Visit the Highlands Nature Center; drive through the vintage covered wooden bridge at The Bascom art center and enjoy their varied exhibits; swim in the new Jr. Olympic-size pool (now open year-round!), play tennis, shoot hoops, and even enjoy the newly constructed skateboard ramps at the Highlands Recreation Center; spend time at Founder's Park (downtown) to simply relax, feed the ducks/geese at Harris Lake, enjoy the varied opportunities for food lovers, take the kids ice skating!
But wait, there's more.......Try a day trip to Cherokee, NC, home of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (a tribal sovereign nation that functions under the laws of the Federal Government), to experience the true culture of our native friends; visit the Visitor's Center (Oconaluftee) at the NC entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, immediately adjacent to Cherokee, where you can also view the interesting Mountain Farm Museum and nearby Mingus Mill. Have a hankering to travel higher than the 4,118 foot Highlands plateau?...continue to Balsam Mountain, along the Blue Ridge Parkway, to view vistas as high as 6,410 feet.....not high enough?.... travel to Mount Mitchell State Park, Burnsville, NC (north of Asheville, NC), to reach the summit at 6,684 feet, which is the highest point east of the Mississippi River! Take a drive to ride the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad departing from Bryson City, NC. Still want more fun? Visit Tallulah Gorge State Park in Tallulah Falls, GA....view the breathtaking gorge (2 miles long and 1,000 foot deep!) from high above, or take the challenging 615(?) step descent to the river itself during which you will cross an amazing pedestrian suspension bridge. To be sure, there is much to do and see nearby!
Browse and shop to your heart's content in downtown Highlands! Our shopping experience is oriented to both the resourceful and the opulent; from hiking shoes to antiques, t-shirts to leather handbags, artwork to furniture, we have it all in Highlands! Our many eating establishments provide for great, modest-priced meals: from ice cream cones and sandwiches to those who seek the unique, gastronomical delight of several five-star restaurants. Consider also embarking on a short drive to Cashiers for more shopping, Glenville for a glorious lake view (swimming, boating and picnics), or just enjoy a refreshing stroll in our very own Falling Waters neighborhood – perhaps to include a picnic down by the modest streams and beautiful waterfall, or a quiet walkabout through the attractive development. To be sure, you won’t be disappointed!
Let there be no doubt that “Journey’s End” is a place to call home, a well-appointed lodge to enjoy, and a welcoming respite from the busy urban life! We welcome you, esteemed guests, to our Highlands mountain paradise!
1) We can accommodate less than a 3-night/4-night minimum stay, but at a higher rate than the quoted nightly rate due to pro-rated laundry costs, etc. Please inquire with the owner.
2) The property sleeps 6 (2 each in 3 king size beds; each bedroom features a private bathroom)!
3) We offer air conditioning throughout the entire home, unlike many mountain homes in the area. Although the mountain elevation offers cooler summer temperatures, we also experience relatively high humidity - thus, a/c provides both temperature and humidity control.
4) Small well-behaved dog considered, but requires prior approval by the owner. If approved, the Pet Fee offsets the cost related to carpet cleaning and removal of pet dander.
