Barry Stilwell purchased this house in 2013
This property is located within 5 minutes of downtown Geneva and Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Located at the north end of Seneca Lake
Cozy, spacious, gazebo, dock, views
What an awesome view....We had the best vacation in a long time. Everything that the owner listed was as they stated. House was very well kept and clean. All the amenities of home plus a view that we don't have. Sitting on the dock and reading a book was so peaceful, along with seeing the boaters go by.
Thank you again!!!! I give you 5 stars!!
Going wine tasting was very nice..house is located right in the wine trail and offered great views.
We liked the views...the house was very nice, clean and comfortable. Well supplied.
The home was very humbling and wonderful view for overlooking the lake. Close to Geneva, and in the middle of the trails on the west side of the lake. The outdoor areas were a great place to relax and get together. Enjoyed our stay.
We rented this property from July 31 to Aug 4(4 nights). Here is our review representing two families.
- The patio is nice having a great view of sunset
- Owner responded very quickly when we were there and the detergent was running out.
- We enjoyed the wine from the owner as well
- The pictures of the house look great but actually the condition is really poor.
- The inside of the house is very flimsy and disrepair. It’s like if you touch it will break. (If anything breaks, you need to pay for a new one)
- There is one air conditioner upstairs and one downstairs. Both of them are super noisy and very old. It's impossible to sleep with them on.
· The furniture and amenities are very old
· All kitchen ware are very old
· No dish washer
· All bedroom doors cannot be closed
· No window can be opened and no curtains in any window except the master washroom
- It is very expensive to wire the money to him twice (deposit and fee), and also when he wired the deposit back, we shared these expenses, but still it added the cost.
There was also a quite story after we left. He claimed we broke 3 things
- lamp : we told him during the stay. It's an old lamp on the headboard (which is not a safe place for a lamp)
- sheet: he said it's messed. We didn't know until he said that
- curtain in the master bedroom: we didn't touch at all. It was where it was. He said some clip was off.
He sent three pictures of the new things he said he would buy them to replace. When I asked for the receipt he said he won't give it to me. The total cost he said was significant considering original items were second hand. And the end, I couldn't get a big chunk of my deposit back from him.
I was so tired of communicating with him. It was no point to argue since he had my money. And I didn't know what else I could do. I was not sure he was doing the same thing to all tenants. Or maybe because we were coming from Canada, he dared to do that. I don't know if it was scam or not, but at the end he didn't show me the receipt.
We spent money renting the place and drove all the way from Canada to have a vacation on Finger lakes. We wouldn't mind to pay for the "damage" as long as it's reasonable. But this became a bad experience.
After all these, the only thing I can do is to tell the other people not to get the same trouble. My sincere suggestion is not to rent this property at all.
A group of us rent a lake house every year and this year we went with Barry's house. I'm not sure why it happens, but when you filter for houses with A/C, Barry's rental comes up even though there is no air conditioning. So that was a not so fun surprise. Also, I think it is not accurate to call this house a Lake Front house; Lake View is more accurate. There is a house directly below this one right on the water. When you go onto the lawn, you can only see the water if you're standing. If you try and sit in the yard chairs available, all you see is the roof of the house below. You are only able to access the dock from a small patch of grass at the bottom of the stairs. Also, there is no water access for swimming so I think saying water accessible is a half truth. It has a lift for a boat, but there is no ladder or any way to get into the water (well, getting in is easy, out is the hard part) without taking your life at risk over the makeshift dam they've built of rocks and a metal grate. Lastly, curtains. There are none on the bedroom windows. So every morning is an early one unless you plan ahead and Macgyver something. Oh, and one of the bedrooms has a curtain for the door. Overall, Barry was great with communication and the process went smoothly. The bottle of wine upon arrival was very nice. I had no problems with my security deposit being refunded.
My three grown sons and I stayed 3 nights in this well equipped and nicely furnished cottage overlooking Seneca Lake.
It was conveniently located within a few miles from Geneva, and the drive to Watkins Glen and returning on the other side of the lake offered spectacular views and access to more than 35 wineries. Roy's Marina is located within a mile where we rented a speedboat and spent one day on the lake fishing and tubing. Barry Stilwell handled the rental communication and transaction professionally, and his quick response to my questions was greatly appreciated.
Most everything is within 15 minutes from the house and Watkins Glen within 30 minutes.
