Château Ventenac, available to rent for self catering holidays, is ideal for groups of family or friends who want to holiday together and is the perfect venue for that special birthday or anniversary celebration. Located in the Languedoc region, this holiday home boasts spectacular views over the Canal du Midi to the Corbieres hills and the Pyrenees. About Julia Bristow

I originally bought Chateau Ventenac as a project with my ex husband in 2004. The house and gardens certainly needed a lot of work, Chateau Ventenac hadn't been touched for about 50 years.

Sadly during the process of renovation I separated from my ex husband but I decided to continue the work on my own.

It has been a tough few years but the house is now finished and I am so proud of what I have been able to do to turn a neglected wreck into a beautiful and comfortable holiday home.

I am now supported in looking after Chateau Ventenac by my new partner, Philip. We love spending time in Ventenac with friends and family visiting.

Why Julia Bristow chose Lezignan-Corbieres area

We were looking for a second home in France close enough to get to easily and yet far enough south to have the advertised 300 days of sunshine each year. This region is just so accessible with Carcassonne and Beziers airports only 40 minutes away and Narbonne train station with a Motorrail terminus just 20 minutes away.It is 15 minutes to the motorway.

It is just 40 minutes drive to the beach and yet you can be skiing in the Pyrenees within 2 hours.

It is a region steeped in history, both Roman and Cathar, with so many interesting places to visit.

We just love that the area has so much to offer yet is not too touristy. It is the real south of France. The locals are lovely and very friendly. The local wine is fantastic and local produce is fresh and very tasty.

We just love it.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

When at Chateau Ventenac you get a real sense of escape from the stresses of normal life. The views are spectacular and with such a vast landscape comes a sense of peace and restoration.

The house is very comfortable and cosy even though it retains some of the grandeur of it's bygone life. Polished oak floors, marble fireplaces and large rooms all make it feel like a Chateau and yet we have a really well equipped kitchen, and up to date satellite Tv and broadband internet.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just to say what a fantastic week we had at the Château – it is truly a magical place – Ventenac is a little gem of a village. It was a holiday that my family and our children will have treasured memories of forever! It was made all the better by the delicious fresh bread, croissants and pain au chocolates from the boulangerie and the winery at the end of the road – I daren’t even think how many litres of wine we drank!! The swimming pool was a complete hit with the children and we had to drag them out of it much of the time otherwise they would have been happy to sleep in it. Thank you so much we were fascinated by the house itself and it is a credit to all your hard work in restoring it. We would definitely visit again in the future.

Our time at Chateau Ventenac can be best described as pure escapism from our busy city lives. The Chateau was very clean and well equipped and the fact that it had wifi was a great bonus. The people caring for the property and grounds were very attentive and friendly but also discreet.

The Chateau was beautiful and far beyond what we had imagined. The view towards the Pyrenees was unsurpassed.

Places that we would recommend not missing are - L'o de la Bouche in Le Somail. This restaurant served great food in a very pretty setting alongside the Canal du Midi. Also, we would definitely advise hiring the bikes from MeloVelo in Paraza and following one of their cycle routes. It was a great way to get to know the area and see things we would have otherwise missed in a car. The ride to Lac Jouarres was great as it took us through the vineyards away from all the roads and then back along the canal through all the little quintessenital french villages. Carcassone, Beziers and Narbonne are all worth seeing.

We would certainly recommend this Chateau to friends and family and would love to return again.

Ventenac is a delightfully peaceful and friendly village, perfectly located for exploring the Languedoc region. The village has two restaurants offering a wide choice of menus and informal dining. There is a post office, a bakery open every day, playground for small children and boules pit. In nearby villages there are more restaurants, supermarkets, bakers, general stores, tabacs, cafés and bars. The pure sandy beaches of the Mediterranean Sea are about 35 minutes drive away, with a choice of family resorts such as Narbonne Plage and Gruisson, with its unusual chalets supported on stilts. From the house you can see the hills of the Corbières range, with the Pyrenees behind them – about an hour away by car. The famous medieval city of Carcassonne is 35km away, while the Cathar village of Minerve is even closer. Our biggest local city is Narbonne, just 20 mins away, first established as a regional capital by the Romans circa 1st century BC.

All but one of the bedrooms are south facing with stunning panoramic views across our gardens, the Canal du Midi and the southern France countryside. All linen and bathroom towels are provided. The 1st floor bedrooms are gloriously spacious with their own en suite and original restored features such as the polished oak floors and fireplaces. Each room is traditionally decorated with bedside tables, lamps, rugs, curtains, chairs, hairdryer and at least one table/desk. Second Floor bedrooms are furnished in a pretty French country style, which complements the original terracota tiled floors and exposed beams. On the top floor there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms . *Cots and high chairs are available on request at the time of booking.
