|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
This remote property is at the end of a 2 km, somewhat bumpy forest road, fronting a quiet ocean inlet. Enjoy tidal flats filled with oysters, bird life and clean ocean water. Two salmon runs can be seen in fall. The cottage is located at the edge of a garden clearing, 400' from the beach.
Inside the cottage you'll find a glass-fronted wood stove, hot water, shower, full kitchen, all rooms completely furnished. Linens, blankets, pillows and towels are provided .
Tap into our WiFi (medium speed) at the main house, if needed. Cell phone signal is available also at the main house, but it is weak. There is no TV.
Firewood for heat, and propane for cooking range, hot water and fridge.
Sleeps 4 max: Queen bed in bedroom, and a fold out hide-a-bed in front room.
Guests have access to the rest of the property and they can also use our canoe to paddle out into Desolation Sound.
How to find us: Drive north of Powell River on 101 Highway. After about 25 minutes, watch for a fire-station sign on the right, brown and red mailboxes on the left of a turn-off called 'Craig Rd'. (It is 2.5 km. from the highway to the cottage) The highway here swings to the left and Craig Rd swings slightly to the right. Turn off here and shortly you will turn right onto 'Plummer Creek Rd'. Pretty soon it turns from pavement into gravel, starts to go downhill and into the woods. (The road is a bit lumpy in spots but not soft, low riding sports cars are not advisable) You'll go down by an old sand pit with open gates on the sides, and then on down into thicker mature forest. Ignore all signs of 'closed road'. At the bottom, it levels out and swings left. In a few hundred yards there will be a fork, stay left and go up a rise. Then after a couple of turns, it opens up into a garden where you'll see 'Koppen - 9120'. Here is where you can park - just before the sign, there is a pull-over to the right.
Once here..... Since we make our own power, we need to be mindful of electricity consumption, and turn off lights and elec. devices when not in use.
The road from the highway 101 to the property is rough in some spots. A regular car can travel it, but must go very slowly. We recommend to stock up with groceries in Powell River. Bring a flashlight and solid shoes. If you bring dogs, please note: Only friendly dogs can be off leash. We have two friendly Leonbergers and there are dogs owned by neighbors. Close to our main house, please leash your dogs if they are not used to cats.
Powell River, a town of 18000 people and is 35min car ride from cottage. There is a movie theatre, gyms, restaurants, museums, galleries, shopping, golf and various activities. Hiking forest trails, all water sports, including excellent diving, are available. Powell River has been called a 'Cultural Capitol of Canada' for its promotion of the arts, such as choral competitions and festivals.
There are ferry services to and from Powell River, and a Transit Bus from Powell River to Lund, passing by our property access. Other than that, you will need a vehicle, bike or hiking boots.
We, Cindy and I, are living in harmony with nature . Our location is back in the forest by the ocean in a big garden. As we are off the electrical grid we are generating our own power, using solar and micro hydro. We are artists and artisans, we build wooden kayaks and other boats, some furniture, breed Leonberger dogs, garden for food and flowers and play music. We travel sometimes to dog shows and to concerts. We love Dave Matthews Band and, as children of the 60's, we are rooted in that music. Our motto is a DMB quote: If kindness is you king, you will know heaven before you die.
Jurgen Koppen purchased this cottage in 1994
Because it simply is paradise
Silent oceanfront, privacy surrounded by forest, ocean and gardens
Jurgen and Cindy were wonderful, as was the cottage. Clean and cosy and the perfect place to just relax completely for my partner and I's elopement. The woodwork in the cottage is just beautiful, too. Would 100% recommend staying here to anyone :)
After making it down the 15 minute drive along the bumpy road, we found our very welcoming and clean cabin. After making a cocktail we headed towards the ocean to explore. Cindy and Jurgen welcomed us with big hearts like we were long lost friends. Cindy brought us life jackets and paddles and send us out on their canoe. The timing was perfect, the tide was in, the waters were calm and the bay was filled with button jellyfish. We saw eagles, ravens and the salmon were beginning their warm up stretches before heading upstream.
It rained off and on for the next couple days so we flipped back and forth between lounging inside by the fire and exploring the trails nearby, one of them connected to the sunshine coast trail.
We seemed to fit everything in that we wanted to in the 3 days there; eat, walk and relax. We even treated ourselves to a dinner out at the Laughing Oyster. We both had the buffet and waddled out to the parking lot...
We would of liked it a touch more if the cabin had a covered porch so we could sit outside, which was needed because the wood stove burned very hot...although for a romantic getaway that is not such a big deal.
We loved our time there and would recommend it to anyone with a SUV or a truck- remember to bring your groceries so you can relax there longer.
Next time, we will stock up on groceries and spend our entire holiday walking the magnificent forests around this idyllic cabin and paddling the inlet. We will simply remain in this magical spot and soak up the peace. Jürgen and Cindy are profoundly generous and caring people. They have a wonderful garden and I loved going and picking fresh basil for our evening meal. We are grateful for their willingness to share their little piece of paradise. So much beauty. All I can say is if you look at this cabin and have the inclination to visit...don't hesitate....We spent 10 nights and could have stayed longer....Thank you!!!! ps. they have two fantastic dogs - Kiwi and Reggae.
We enjoyed two wonderful weeks at the cabin with our two dogs. The owners, the cottage and the property are all completely dog-friendly and, of course, their beautiful Leonbergers are dog-friendly too! The cottage is comfortable, private, and very cosy. Although you can see Okeover Arm in the distance, there isn't really a water view from the cabin but the water is a short walk away. The beautiful wooden canoe is the perfect boat to explore the inlet and meet playful seals. Wonderful fresh vegetables and fruit from Cindy's garden are special treats as is a tour of Jurgen's studio with the latest beautiful kayak in progress.
The cabin is perfectly situated between Lund and Powell River, leading to many explorations of land and water along the way. While the road down to the cabin off the highway does require patience, it was completely do-able in our RAV. There are some rocky places to navigate but the road is firm and safe. We drove it without difficulty at night but I wouldn't recommend arriving after dark as you need to get a sense of the journey first in daylight. Also no cellphone service after you leave the vicinity of the Tla'amin gas station (which really is the last gas station on the road heading toward Lund).
We had a wonderful, peaceful vacation and wish we could go back right away! Try the Laughing Oyster restaurant for an excellent meal and Terracentric zodiac tours to see astonishingly beautiful Desolation Sound. We will certainly recommend Cindy and Jurgen's cottage to friends. The property is exactly as described in their listing but even more beautiful and peaceful. However, do be aware that the little bar fridge is very small indeed --fine for provisions for two or three days.
This was a great place for a getaway. Great scenery, people, and such a homey atmosphere. We enjoyed it thoroughly and would come back in a heartbeat.
After a bumpy ride down the dirt road , ( I suggest, 4 wheel drive or SUV ) its all worth while ,when you come upon this majical place. Set on a huge property of fruit trees ,flowers and veggie gardens,at the end of Okeover Arm ,the beauty and quiet is breathtaking.A short walk threw the gardens brings you out to a totally private beach ,great for beach combing swimming or just gazing at the view. We didn't see or hear another person the entire time we were there ,other than the owners Cindy and Jergan who were loveley. The cabin was awesome ,very clean ,with wood stove and all appliances, the fridge was a bit small,(like a camper size ), but everything else worked great . I suggest you take your groceries with you, so you don't have to leave .The porch and yard were very piecefull. The dogs were the best ,so friendly and cuddly. I would recomend this spot to anyone who wants a completely restfull holiday ( no cell phones,TV's or internet ) just nature ,piece and quiet. We will definatly go back, for longer next time !
Take a good book and enjoy !
There are two salmon runs in our Toquenatch Creek, October and November every year.
