About Deborah Vogt

I'm a retired lawyer, and former assistant attorney general for the state of Alaska. I came to Alaska in 1971 to go backpacking in the Brook Range; the next year a friend and I began guiding backpacking trips, which I did for 12 summers. Then law school; then 25 years in Juneau with the state. I retired in 1999; my husband died i n 2001. I moved to Haines the next year, buying the unfinished house up the hill from River House. A few years later I bought River House.

Deborah Vogt purchased this cottage in 2004

Wonderful little place

  • 5 of 5

We rented both the upper and lower units together. The upper unit has a splendid view of the river mountains from inside the house and on the deck. We saw bear, bald eagles and seals(?) playing out front. The upstairs bedroom has a window through the roof over the bed - we watched stars, satellites and, one night, the aurora while laying snug in bed.

The location is a two minute drive or fifteen minute walk from downtown Haines, so it convenient, but it is off the main roads on a little dead-end gravel road, so you'll never see the crowds to know a cruise ship is in town. There is also a meadow and gravelly beach a few minutes walk away where we roasted marshmallows a few evenings (not sure if that is legal). The meadow was nice in early August; there was one spot where I could pick wild blueberries with one hand and wild raspberries with the other.

The house also comes with a sauna, the usual kitchen supplies, TV and, oh, a nice little bench built into a upstairs window where you can lay and look out over the river.

The lower unit is basic and does not have the views and only a minimal set of kitchen supplies, although you only have to step outside and walk a minute down to the meadow and beach.

My favorite accommodation in Haines

  • 5 of 5

A return visitor, as I come to Haines at least once a year - a family thing! I stayed at a variety of spots until I found River House. Regardless of the season, I love the setting, the views, the perfect size of the lower unit (for me), and the warm attentive service. It is peaceful and relaxing as a home base while supplying the energy for adventuring.

First time in alaska

A great will furnished cabin on the water. Private, no houses in view. Terrific location at the very top of the inside passage, mountains going into the sea. Warm and friendly service. Close to town if one wants tone, but feels like total wilderness. Could not have been better. Thanks
