Welcome to my beautiful and comfortable home. Soak in panoramic views of the Faxaflói bay from an eclectic and artsy environment. I am an artist and on occasion I rent out a wing of my home which is located above my art studio. Yes you can see Northern Lights, Glaciers & Volcano views from the living room and kitchen of my home.
The house is set on the end of a peninsula which is named after a Norse sea goddess. All views from the kitchen and living room are stunning. The interior is comfortable and elegant. The walls are adorned with artworks.
Our home is a wonderful home base to visit the Snaeffelsness Penninsula, Reykholt Valley, Whale watching in Grundafjord, Glymur Water Falls and the Hafnarfjall mountain.
It has a very comfortable living room, dining area, and the kitchen is fully equipped with cooking and baking tools. Fine linens and good down comforters are included.
Drive the Snæfellsnes highway and hike the Snæfellsnes glacier as adventurously described in the Jules Verne novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. Continue on anywhere in any direction and discover what locals refer to as the REAL Iceland.
Marvel pristine coastlines and visit quaint villages. Patient hikers may spot arctic foxes, eagles, or killer whales and dolphins in the bay. Coastal drives, fishing, geothermal hot pot hunting and hiking are great past times. During the fall, wintertime and springtime northern lights sweep through the skies.
I'm an artist, my art studio and apartment is below the rental property. I love traveling meeting people and creating environments that inspire!
Michelle Bird purchased this house in 2014
I fell in love with this home and it's stunning monumental views. From the living room, kitchen and office, you can see in full view the bay, the ocean, the glaciers langjokull and Eric's Jokull and monumental mountain Hafnarfjall which is a dormant volcano. During the winter I have seen Northern lights from inside the house on countless occasions from anytime in October until April. Lenticular clouds, pink and purple light flood the short days in the winter. Ice sheets in the water cluster and mount up on our shores. This is truly a magical setting anytime of the year.
Repose! The space is elegant and comfortable, there are many places in the living and dining room to sit and read, or watch the tides. We are less than a ten minute walk for the geo thermal hotpots at the swimming pool and sports center near by (which also offers badminton classes). There is a god golf course in Borgarnes and in Husafell! Horseback riding is usually offered after april and before november.
My wife and I and another couple used this as our base for a quick 4-day trip to Iceland and it was great. The setting was beautiful and it was a convenient launching point for excursions to Snaefellness peninsula, Grabrok caldera, or back down to Reykjavik and the Golden Circle. One night we could see the aurora borealis from the kitchen window.
Michelle was an enthusiastic and delightful hostess, checking in on us once a day and a font of valuable information about what to see and do.
The apartment is well-equipped and vibrantly decorated with Michelle's artwork. She directed us to a great restaurant within walking distance of the house where we feasted on lamb, fish, and icelandic lobster. The town sport and health center was a great place to relax in the hot tubs at the end of the day (less than $5 per adult admission fee).
Borgarnes is a perfect home base to travel around west Iceland. It's a very friendly and quaint town with hiking opportunities and exploring along the picturesque coast is a must. There are 2 grocery stores and a very good bakery: Geirabakari Kaffihus featured as Papa Joe's in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (by the way the views from the scene at Papa Joe's are the views from our home). Blómasetrið - Kaffi Kyrrð is my favorite cafe, they serve home-made waffles with cream. Ljómalind Farmers Market has home made ice cream, fresh eggs and more local delights. The Settlement Center is an excellent restaurant (open until 9 pm) and serves a vegetarian buffet daily (11-15pm).
Borgarnes has basketball courts, jogging paths, and a pretty park. I appreciate that we're close to many caves and glaciers and day trips are easy.
Marvel pristine coastlines and visit quaint villages. Patient hikers may spot arctic foxes and falcons. Killer whales and dolphins can be spotted further up in the bay and are best seen with a tour. There are easily a weeks worth of day trips from Borgarnes as a home base. Some of these are:
1) Driving around the Snæfelsjokull glacier. (the volcano mentioned in Jules Verne novel Journey to the Center of the Earth.) The road around the glaciers has many stops and short hikes. This is a full day trip. Hiking the glacier is a separate day trip. As is Whale watching with Laki Tours in Grundafjordur.
2) Driving through the Reykjholt Valley, hiking Hestfjall and visiting the Stedje Brewery.
3) Hiking Glymur the highest waterfall in Europe.
Coastal drives, fishing, geothermal hot pot hunting and hiking are great past times. During the fall, wintertime and springtime NORTHERN LIGHTS sweep through the skies.
