i am originally from Toronto, Canada. i hold a business degree in Advertising and Marketing, and worked in that field and Publishing for over 25 years before i looked to make a change in my life. when i first left Canada i came to Costa Rica in the winter of 1992, (over 25 years) and fell in love with the area right there and then. I purchased a little piece of paradise where i am now living permanently. I am an artist that has a contractor business here, and i also publish our local newspaper called THE DIRT ROAD. i am currently divorced, living on the property in my first home i built myself back then when there was no electricity and no water, with just 3 Costa Rican’s and a lot of luck. I live here permanently with my two dogs, Akun and Nicoya. I am an entrepreneur from the start, when i came to Costa Rica our village had just got electricity so i started our first bakery, called 'la casa Rosa', delivering pizza and fresh baked bread to our very small population...i later moved on to the manager and chef at Star Mountain resort in MalPais...i also had a massage practice and created beach parties for the young tourists in the early years... Shortly thereafter i purchased this property and started building my paint contractors business. In 2009 i started our village newspaper called The Dirt Road. i have worked in the many homes of Mel Gibson as the main Paint Contractor and color consultant here in Costa Rica and MalPais, and well as many other homes of the rich and famous here. I fell in love with our area the moment i saw it, and still believe it is the best part of Costa Rica. over 25years have passed and I'm what most locals refer to as an 'old school' resident. i love it here and especially grateful i can share my love of the village, and the incredible nature with my guests.
april aboud purchased this house in 2000
I have seen all of Costa Rica in my first 5 years when I came here in 1992 and besides Playa Santa Teresa being voted as the top 5 beaches in the world, i personally don’t think there is a more beautiful beach anywhere. I have watched this area grow from No electricity and No phone lines, and a population of about 30 families, with only 2 little local restaurants, 2 public schools, no banks or even a grocery store; into the current village we have now, which includes 4 private schools, 30 international cuisine restaurants, 10 yoga studios and spas, famous surf breaks, 5 grocery stores, banks, doctors, and a population of over 1,000 families. And i still love it here ! In 2000 I decided it was finally time to buy land, and although i could have traded my car for a piece of beachfront land in 1994, when i started to look for my paradise, i looked to the small hillside that follows our coastline for miles. i wanted to be up and above the growing crowds, but still close enough to be a part of the village. This is a very special piece of land, above the emerald green jungle, looking at the gem of the pacific for miles and miles. I own this little knoll overlooking the best of the best. I have NO neighbors on either side of me, (because I’m on this knoll). I rest about 50 meters above it all, so you can actually see the beach, the palm trees and the surfers catching the waves. Whether you like watching the monkey’s pass by, tropical birds or relaxing with a cup of tea and a good book, or how about a margarita to watch the amazing sunsets, or sit by the pool and stargaze all night. The Emerald Abode is my own private sanctuary, and i'm happy to share it with my guests....it is truly the gem of Santa Teresa for me. this is a non-smoking property.
Over the past 25 years i have had many visiting friends and family, all saying the same thing about my property. Everyone that visits mentions the amazing energy of the land and the truly amazing large views. But it wasn't until 2013 that i decided to build a rental home to share this beautiful piece of paradise with others. So my second home, the Emerald Abode, was designed for the visitor. This Tropical house was designed open air to nature, to take advantage of the amazing views, the sound of the ocean waves 24/7, and fresh air! Each room has a large ocean view, with the jungle below creating an emerald carpet, making a perfect back drop for sitting back and relaxing. Some have said the view inspires, and as an artist i know why. Living outside of the hustle and bustling of the big cities and even our little village here, one can hear the tropical birds and migrating monkeys in the early morning, watch the iguana’s and little gecko’s playing all day, and hear the crickets and tree frogs at night, but the most spectacular part of this property, is to see and hear the ocean 24/7. The rhythm of the ocean is really hypnotic and can roll away even the most stressed situation, making this the perfect relaxing and romantic place in Santa Teresa. Dreams feel possible when you’re sitting and enjoying the Emerald Abode.
We spent 2 weeks here as part of our month long trip to Costa Rica. It has a million dollar view from a beautiful little house. Most of the house is outside which we loved. The bedroom is screened off for sleeping comfort. A few of the nights were really hot and we put on the air conditioner but most of the time we let the sound of the waves lull us to sleep. It was great to dip into the pool in the moonlight. April was available to help us with all of our excursions and anything else we needed. I highly recommend staying here.
We have stayed in VRBOS across the world. The Emerald Abode, is hands down, the most beautiful home we have ever stayed in. This is the best view in all of Santa Theresa by far. A wonderfully private spot yet close to all the action at the bottom of the hill in town. I cant express enough how wonderful April is. She truly makes this place what it is. Its filled with Love , thoughtfulness and incredible attention to detail. The outdoor balcony kitchen is well stocked, (with a welcome gift basket too !) spanking clean, and practical, with the most sweeping delicious view of the beach and ocean as far as the eye can see. Stunning. Your own private infinity pool is even more gorgeous than the pictures. We slept like babies in the beautiful bedroom that faces the same view and were lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves. I just cant say enough about The Emerald Abode. We will return again and again to this gem of a spot and cant wait to see April again. She is the best, most thoughtful, caring, knowledgeable and helpful host we've ever had the pleasure of meeting.
This is the place you want to be.
My husband and I honeymooned in Santa Teresa and at The Emerald Abode and it could not have been better! This is THE perfect spot for a getaway to Costa Rica. Pictures don't do it justice. The home is very private; yet, in less than a 5 minute drive down the hill you are in the heart of the action of Santa Teresa/Malpais! The home is located perfectly within the trees, so you feel like you are part of the landscape. At the same time, you have an incredible view of the ocean and can watch - and hear - the surf! You can watch from the amazing pool- jacuzzi, from the cozy hammock for two on the porch, from the kitchen (equip with anything you might need) and from the bed (comfy). April is an amazing host. She will be as engaged, or not, as you want. She helped us coordinate transportation (rent a quad/ ATV to make getting around town easy and super fun, too), excursions and made sure we had everything we needed. Because of her tenure in the community, she is a wealth of knowledge on everything from where to eat to the history of the town. April has everything you would need at the house, no detail overlooked. Everything from a welcome fruit basket, a folder with information about the region, extra toiletries (in case you forget something), beach gear, bbq supplies... you name it! And, if it isn't already at the house, she will make sure you get what you need. The house was very clean. We only wish we had more days at The Emerald Abode and wouldn't think twice about staying there again. In fact we are already looking at our calendars for our next visit!
I now know why this area has beach's named after saints for i'm sure you will agree once you have been, this is where nature meets heaven, leaving all the chaos and worries behind. I stayed at the Emerald Abode with my girlfriend recently, and had the most exciting vacation in many years. The house was perfectly located above the jungle, which i personally love to be so close to nature, and the a/c bedroom which was added luxury for my girlfriend. It was also perfectly located above the village so we didn't have to deal with dust, traffic and noise. The mornings started with a beautiful peaceful breakfast overlooking the morning surfers and listening to the passing birds and butterflies, or watching the monkeys in the trees around us. We went exploring all day long for there are tons of surrounding beach's that are so private, with little restaurants to enjoy along the way. We had a super day at the waterfalls, another day at Tortuga Island where we saw lots of dolphins playing in the ocean, and another day in the National Forest of Cabo Blanco. We also went Zip lining and hung upside down !! Horseback riding along the beach at sunset. There was so much to do, but at the end of the day, the best was to return home to the relaxing, private swimming pool, with a drink in hand, watching the evening surfers catch awesome waves, and watched as the sun met the ocean in brilliant colors. We found Paradise!, in a Super Convenient location for everything, full of Romance and incredibly private. Life Affirming in every way. Would love to move here, but in the meantime, i highly recommend the Emerald Abode and Santa Teresa for everyone looking for a unique vacation. p.s. The house was stocked with everything we needed and more.
The views were spectacular!! I wanted relaxation, but I also wanted activity, and going up & down the mountain, as well as the stairs to the cabina provided that.
April was very helpful in suggesting where to buy my groceries( which I prepared in the kitchen overlooking a fabulous vista), where to go out to eat( Hola Habaneros!!!) and when it was safe to snorkel in the tide pools.( This was by far my most favorite experience & I would come back to do this again!)
Relaxing in the private pool with a cocktail overlooking the ocean... watching the sunset in a plethora of color... seeing & hearing the howling monkeys right there among the trees... the amazing.birds, lizards... napping in the beautiful macramé hammock.....
I must say it is an experience that all nature & fitness loving people should experience at least once. I would love to come back with a partner to share this experience with......
Your dream vacation awaits you at the Emerald Abode.
I checked out all the reviews and I knew in my mind I needed the Emerald Abode. April's 28 years of experience living in Santa Teresa gave me a piece of mind, for the numerous questions I wanted answered. I found her very professional and easy to work with.
I knew it was the rainy season when booking, I was fine with that. My vacation was based on some piece of mind and spirit along with some BIG adventures. Pleased to say, I had the warmth of sunshine everyday. I swam, snorkeled, went to Delfina's Golf Resort, not only for a round of golf but to see the exquisite Macaw preserve, or biological refuge.(I have parrots myself).
In the mornings, I would sit and read, watch the whales in the far distance and the surfers up close, until it was sunny and warm, take a quick dip in April's, plunge pool and find myself at the beach. Late afternoon I would go to MalPais fishing village for the freshest of fish and was perfectly content to cook in the open air kitchen. As a matter of fact, I loved all of her open air areas, being able to look out over the jungle canopy to the ocean was fantastic.
I left with a new reserve of energy until I can come down again.I will book Emerald Abode any time, dry season or rainy.
PS. Better have April make you one of her special drinks...mine was fresh pineapple and local coconut rum, a kind of Pina Coloda. Yum!
the village of Santa Teresa is the vacation spot for the rich and famous. often you will see movie stars roaming the beach, or having coffee at our local bakery. this is an international village, with over 70 restaurants serving international cuisine, 20 surf shops with surf instructors, 10 yoga/pilates studios, famous surf breaks, lots of souvenir shops, and much much more.
