i am originally from Toronto, Canada. i hold a business degree in Advertising and Marketing, and worked in that field and Publishing for over 25 years before i looked to make a change in my life. when i first left Canada i came to Costa Rica in the winter of 1992, (over 25 years) and fell in love with the area right there and then. I purchased a little piece of paradise where i am now living permanently. I am an artist that has a contractor business here, and i also publish our local newspaper called THE DIRT ROAD. i am currently divorced, living on the property in my first home i built myself back then when there was no electricity and no water, with just 3 Costa Rican’s and a lot of luck. I live here permanently with my two dogs, Akun and Nicoya. I am an entrepreneur from the start, when i came to Costa Rica our village had just got electricity so i started our first bakery, called 'la casa Rosa', delivering pizza and fresh baked bread to our very small population...i later moved on to the manager and chef at Star Mountain resort in MalPais...i also had a massage practice and created beach parties for the young tourists in the early years... Shortly thereafter i purchased this property and started building my paint contractors business. In 2009 i started our village newspaper called The Dirt Road. i have worked in the many homes of Mel Gibson as the main Paint Contractor and color consultant here in Costa Rica and MalPais, and well as many other homes of the rich and famous here. I fell in love with our area the moment i saw it, and still believe it is the best part of Costa Rica. over 25years have passed and I'm what most locals refer to as an 'old school' resident. i love it here and especially grateful i can share my love of the village, and the incredible nature with my guests.
april aboud purchased this house in 2000
I have seen all of Costa Rica in my first 5 years when I came here in 1992 and besides Playa Santa Teresa being voted as the top 5 beaches in the world, i personally don’t think there is a more beautiful beach anywhere. I have watched this area grow from No electricity and No phone lines, and a population of about 30 families, with only 2 little local restaurants, 2 public schools, no banks or even a grocery store; into the current village we have now, which includes 4 private schools, 30 international cuisine restaurants, 10 yoga studios and spas, famous surf breaks, 5 grocery stores, banks, doctors, and a population of over 1,000 families. And i still love it here ! In 2000 I decided it was finally time to buy land, and although i could have traded my car for a piece of beachfront land in 1994, when i started to look for my paradise, i looked to the small hillside that follows our coastline for miles. i wanted to be up and above the growing crowds, but still close enough to be a part of the village. This is a very special piece of land, above the emerald green jungle, looking at the gem of the pacific for miles and miles. I own this little knoll overlooking the best of the best. I have NO neighbors on either side of me, (because I’m on this knoll). I rest about 50 meters above it all, so you can actually see the beach, the palm trees and the surfers catching the waves. Whether you like watching the monkey’s pass by, tropical birds or relaxing with a cup of tea and a good book, or how about a margarita to watch the amazing sunsets, or sit by the pool and stargaze all night. The Emerald Abode is my own private sanctuary, and i'm happy to share it with my guests....it is truly the gem of Santa Teresa for me. this is a non-smoking property.
Over the past 25 years i have had many visiting friends and family, all saying the same thing about my property. Everyone that visits mentions the amazing energy of the land and the truly amazing large views. But it wasn't until 2013 that i decided to build a rental home to share this beautiful piece of paradise with others. So my second home, the Emerald Abode, was designed for the visitor. This Tropical house was designed open air to nature, to take advantage of the amazing views, the sound of the ocean waves 24/7, and fresh air! Each room has a large ocean view, with the jungle below creating an emerald carpet, making a perfect back drop for sitting back and relaxing. Some have said the view inspires, and as an artist i know why. Living outside of the hustle and bustling of the big cities and even our little village here, one can hear the tropical birds and migrating monkeys in the early morning, watch the iguana’s and little gecko’s playing all day, and hear the crickets and tree frogs at night, but the most spectacular part of this property, is to see and hear the ocean 24/7. The rhythm of the ocean is really hypnotic and can roll away even the most stressed situation, making this the perfect relaxing and romantic place in Santa Teresa. Dreams feel possible when you’re sitting and enjoying the Emerald Abode.
April is a wonderful host. She honestly thinks of everything and is so generous and thorough. It was so nice to arrive late in the evening and find a full fridge with cold beer and coffee and fruit for the morning. Her guest house is indescribably beautiful. It is really well maintained, clean, comfortable. It sits in the middle of the jungle overlooking the ocean. It is private, romantic and safe.
We just got back from a week-long stay at the Emerald Abode and had an amazing time. If you are looking for something different, a great location with lots to do, and a peaceful place this might would be perfect for you. First off, April is not your typical VRBO owner, but acts as a concierge. Once we booked with her, she was extremely helpful providing detailed notes for getting there, about the property, and about the Nicoya Penisula. Her recommendations were spot on for companies to use, restaurants, and activities. For us, she truly was a savior after we experienced cancelled flights, change in airports, and lost luggage on our trip down. Due to her contacts, we were able to get our luggage delivered to Santa Teresa, which we believe would have been lost without her. Plus, April does tidy up the kitchen, bathroom, and pool daily and empty your trash, something we did not expect. She is easy to work with and definitely has your best intentions in mind!
The Emerald Abode is a simple, open air, tastefully decorated place. It is basically a bedroom, bathroom, and open air kitchen/lounging area. There were no chairs inside the house, only bar stools at the counter and a hanging hammock for relaxing. The bedroom is screened in and has sliding glass doors that will close it off allowing for AC. We chose to keep the doors open at night to hear the waves and feel the breeze. We didn’t notice bugs in the bedroom, but there were bugs in the open air porch area (it is Costa Rica), especially at night and if the lights were on. We preferred to lounge in the hammock with the lights off under the fan, which kept the bugs away. To know, April is not joking when she says you need a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The roads in Santa Teresa are rough. It is a fairly steep dirt road to the Emerald Abode. We were there during the start of the rainy season, and the road had some areas that were washed out. If you are not used to driving in 4-wheel drive or on dirt roads, it may be a difficult drive to the place. We had a manual Bego which was perfect – 4 wheel drive and compact. If you are willing and able to make that drive, you will be rewarded with spectacular views. Those can’t be beat and are the perfect backdrop for lounging by the pool, eating breakfast (lunch/dinner/drinks), and from the bedroom. Sunsets…wow. Overall, loved Santa Teresa. Quaint town with lots to do – snorkeling, surfing, hiking, waterfalls, fishing, great food and people from all over the world.
I do not recommend this property unless you like being dirty and sleeping and eating with a plethora bugs. I would describe this as open-air. There are only two walls with no openings to the outside. If you don't want to be swarmed with bugs, go elsewhere. The screens on the bedroom do not keep out bugs even if religiously closed. There were bugs in the bed at night, and dead bugs between my boyfriend and I in the sheets in the morning. The bathroom is also open air. I did not sit on the toilet seat due to bugs. As for the kitchen, you cannot cook without bugs galore and enjoy wiping the counter of bugs in the morning with the one dish towel you get. I had to leave. I am not one for camping. We stayed at three other places in Costa Rica during this trip, including another in Santa Teresa, and we did not have the same issue with bugs.
Please know you will get one set of towels to last you a week. Normally okay, but it is hot and buggy. Also, the jacuzzi was discolored. Not knowing what it was, I would not sit in there.
Most disturbing was how the owner was unprofessional. When we talked the day of our arrival, she told me she was not doing okay. Not what you want to hear when you are on your way to have a carefree, fun vacation. She also lives on the property and will yell up to you--so much for privacy. Additionally, when I told her about the bugs, she claimed she saw no evidence of bugs (small and black and could not be photographed against the dark wood) the next afternoon and asked me the "REAL reason I left". I have received no resolution from her or HomeAway.
There are some great places in Santa Teresa that are clean with great views, privacy, and wonderful people. Your dream vacation awaits you elsewhere.
Honeymoon or just a vacation, the Emerald Abode was the PERFECT place to stay! And let me tell you why...
-April was incredibly helpful before we even booked. She answered all my questions about getting there from the airport, about the town, car rental accomodations, etc...anything and everything that would help me make my decision to book here. Once we booked, she was still very helpful in answering all of my nit-picky detailed questions, I felt very prepared for our trip. She helped in arranging our taxi from the Tambor airfield to Santa Teresa, and even had the taxi driver prepared to drop us by the ATV rental to pick that up and we followed him with our luggage up to the rental property.
-The house is beautiful! Open air, great views from every room in the house, and super secluded. April's house is just down the hill, but you still have tons of privacy. I particularly loved the open-air shower, super refreshing!
-Santa Teresa is such a fun little town! Tourist-y enough that you can get around without knowing much (or any) Spanish, but still authentic enough that you actually get the feeling of travelling outside the country. You aren't just in an American-ized city in another country.
-It might have been the time of year we went (I think it was the beginning of the "rainy season"...even though the week we were there the weather was PERFECT, only rained/stormed at night), but most of the beaches were so quiet and unoccupied. A few times, my husband and I were the only ones on the beach!
-The ocean water was the perfect temperature! Never too cold, even in the evening, and still refreshing in the heat of the day!
-Snorkeling at the volcanic rocks was super fun
-Day trip to Tortuga Island was awesome, they have snorkeling gear for you, but once they drop you off at the beach for the afternoon they won't let you take the gear with you (So bring April's with you if you want to snorkel more around the beach!). The travel guides were very professional, fun, and helpful. And the lunch they provided was delicious!
-Hiking the waterfalls at Montezuma is a MUST -- sitting under the waterfall was my husband and I's #1 favorite memory of the trip. Hike up to the 2nd and 3rd and swing on the rope swing and jump off the cliffs!
-Surf Lessons at Kina Surf Shop -- YES!
-Get coffee from The Roastery, Gary is awesome & has fun suggestions, and the coffee is delicious!
-Eat at Caracolas and Habaneros, our 2 favs and sunset views on the beach during dinner!
This is truly the most amazing hidden gem in all of Santa Teresa. My Husband and I spent 5 nights at Emerald Abode in March of 2016. I have rented houses all over the world and this by far was one of the very bests. From the beginning April, the owner, was wonderful to do business with, she was prompt, gave ample information, and was extremely helpful with all of my questions and requests. April arranged a car to pick us up from our prior destination. When we arrived at her rental it was more beautiful than we even expected. There was a wonderful welcome basket full of everything we could imagine. April was very welcoming, kind, and gave a very detailed tour of the property. There are very professional, discreet, yet helpful notes placed around the home to help remind you of the small details. PLEASE NOTE… this is not a first world country, you have to be mindful of your water practices and your waste. There are critters and surprise guests if you are not diligent with your practices, with that said, this is all over this part of Costa Rica, not just April’s rules, and if being mindful of your practices during your vacation is not something you are willing to do, then maybe Santa Teresa is not the right destination for your travel.
For those of you wanting a nature filled adventure, you will not be disappointed! We rented an ATV through a company April recommended for a very nice price. It was the perfect means of travel throughout the city. We used this to go all over the peninsula to find the best surfing spots for the day. We went grocery shopping twice during our stay at a local grocery store. We would wake up and cook breakfast at the house, not only was it the best view in the city, but also helps with your budget and you have a fridge to store lovers. The house is very comfortable; we used the hammocks for daily naps and would watch the sunset from the privacy of our own pool. April has thought of everything a traveler could need, from an ice chest and beach mats to different types of pillows to fit each guest’s individual needs. She even includes recipes in her welcome book to encourage you to use the kitchen, even has pre-frozen mangos to kick-start your margarita! I cannot say enough wonderful things about April and her property. If an oversized couch and a big screen TV is on your must have list, this is not the place for you. If a quiet, private, little piece of nature is what you are looking for, then you found it!

The house is great, the location is great, everything about this property is great, but it wouldn’t be so great without April, the owner of this stunning property. April is what really made this vacation so special and without her guidance and hospitality it just wouldn’t have been the same. One of my favorite parts of this property were the two dogs Akun and Nicoya. If you’re like me, vacations can be tough when you are away from your pets at home. These two dogs are the most loving and loyal dogs I’ve ever met abroad and my fiancé and I really just loved having them around on the property to see us off as we went exploring and welcome us home every day. If there was any downside to staying at the Emerald Abode, it is that now we will be comparing all of our other vacations to this one and I doubt they will stack up.
Please do yourself a favor and book this property. I promise you won’t regret it.
