About april aboud

i am originally from Toronto, Canada. i hold a business degree in Advertising and Marketing, and worked in that field and Publishing for over 25 years before i looked to make a change in my life. when i first left Canada i came to Costa Rica in the winter of 1992, (over 25 years) and fell in love with the area right there and then. I purchased a little piece of paradise where i am now living permanently. I am an artist that has a contractor business here, and i also publish our local newspaper called THE DIRT ROAD. i am currently divorced, living on the property in my first home i built myself back then when there was no electricity and no water, with just 3 Costa Rican’s and a lot of luck. I live here permanently with my two dogs, Akun and Nicoya. I am an entrepreneur from the start, when i came to Costa Rica our village had just got electricity so i started our first bakery, called 'la casa Rosa', delivering pizza and fresh baked bread to our very small population...i later moved on to the manager and chef at Star Mountain resort in MalPais...i also had a massage practice and created beach parties for the young tourists in the early years... Shortly thereafter i purchased this property and started building my paint contractors business. In 2009 i started our village newspaper called The Dirt Road. i have worked in the many homes of Mel Gibson as the main Paint Contractor and color consultant here in Costa Rica and MalPais, and well as many other homes of the rich and famous here. I fell in love with our area the moment i saw it, and still believe it is the best part of Costa Rica. over 25years have passed and I'm what most locals refer to as an 'old school' resident. i love it here and especially grateful i can share my love of the village, and the incredible nature with my guests.

april aboud purchased this house in 2000

Why april aboud chose Puntarenas

I have seen all of Costa Rica in my first 5 years when I came here in 1992 and besides Playa Santa Teresa being voted as the top 5 beaches in the world, i personally don’t think there is a more beautiful beach anywhere. I have watched this area grow from No electricity and No phone lines, and a population of about 30 families, with only 2 little local restaurants, 2 public schools, no banks or even a grocery store; into the current village we have now, which includes 4 private schools, 30 international cuisine restaurants, 10 yoga studios and spas, famous surf breaks, 5 grocery stores, banks, doctors, and a population of over 1,000 families. And i still love it here ! In 2000 I decided it was finally time to buy land, and although i could have traded my car for a piece of beachfront land in 1994, when i started to look for my paradise, i looked to the small hillside that follows our coastline for miles. i wanted to be up and above the growing crowds, but still close enough to be a part of the village. This is a very special piece of land, above the emerald green jungle, looking at the gem of the pacific for miles and miles. I own this little knoll overlooking the best of the best. I have NO neighbors on either side of me, (because I’m on this knoll). I rest about 50 meters above it all, so you can actually see the beach, the palm trees and the surfers catching the waves. Whether you like watching the monkey’s pass by, tropical birds or relaxing with a cup of tea and a good book, or how about a margarita to watch the amazing sunsets, or sit by the pool and stargaze all night. The Emerald Abode is my own private sanctuary, and i'm happy to share it with my is truly the gem of Santa Teresa for me. this is a non-smoking property.

What makes this house unique

Over the past 25 years i have had many visiting friends and family, all saying the same thing about my property. Everyone that visits mentions the amazing energy of the land and the truly amazing large views. But it wasn't until 2013 that i decided to build a rental home to share this beautiful piece of paradise with others. So my second home, the Emerald Abode, was designed for the visitor. This Tropical house was designed open air to nature, to take advantage of the amazing views, the sound of the ocean waves 24/7, and fresh air! Each room has a large ocean view, with the jungle below creating an emerald carpet, making a perfect back drop for sitting back and relaxing. Some have said the view inspires, and as an artist i know why. Living outside of the hustle and bustling of the big cities and even our little village here, one can hear the tropical birds and migrating monkeys in the early morning, watch the iguana’s and little gecko’s playing all day, and hear the crickets and tree frogs at night, but the most spectacular part of this property, is to see and hear the ocean 24/7. The rhythm of the ocean is really hypnotic and can roll away even the most stressed situation, making this the perfect relaxing and romantic place in Santa Teresa. Dreams feel possible when you’re sitting and enjoying the Emerald Abode.

Unbelievably Amazing Honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just returned from honeymooning at the Emerald Abode and we cannot say enough great things about this entire experience! For starters, April (the host) is amazing. She was the best of both worlds- She was extremely respectful of our privacy and never once showed up unannounced but she was also ready to help us at a moments notice. She is full of recommendations for activities and restaurants, she helps book tours and sunset massages and taxis if needed, she answered all of my four million questions and never acted as if it was a hassle, and she went above and beyond for us numerous times (like when we lost the keys to our rental car... she had it all taken care of and a new key on its way in a flash so we didn't have to spend our honeymoon trying to resolve it).

As for the Emerald Abode... It is a really incredible property. The view was breathtaking. Every morning we woke up and made a delicious cup of Costa Rican coffee (which is provided) while listening to the waves crash on the shore nearby. We could also hear the monkeys talking and the birds chirping in the forest below. It was just incredible! Although the property is mostly open air, we never had any issues with bugs. We simply did as April suggested and left the screens closed on the bedroom, we didn't leave food laying around, and all was fine! The 2 person hammock is such a great place to relax, and you absolutely have to watch the sunset from the private infinity pool right outside your door. It's also worth noting we don't sleep well while away from home and we slept better here than we ever have.

The property is also in a fantastic location. The locals are friendly and you will not find a shortage of once-in-a-lifetime activities in and around Santa Teresa. We snorkeled and explored the local beaches and the lava rock formations, we took a catamaran to a beautiful island and snorkeled there as well, we zip lined through the jungle with the monkeys and saw breathtaking views of the beach, we jumped off waterfalls, rode horses down the beach at sunset, rented an ATV and ventured to more nearby beaches (there is no shortage of beautiful beaches nearby, you are surrounded by them) and we ate the most amazing food. The experiences we had were absolutely priceless! We could not have imagined in our wildest dreams a more perfect and unforgettable honeymoon than what we had at the Emerald Abode and we cant wait to return!

Incredible Experience!!!

  • 5 of 5

This property and place is a gem! Not to mention, the owner April, provided an experience that was beyond what we expected. We were on our honeymoon and relatively new to traveling abroad. April took the time to answer all of our questions and assist in anything we needed. She provided fresh fruit upon our arrival as well as a bottle of champagne to celebrate our marriage. The packet she provided was extremely informative and gave us all the tools we needed to make our stay amazing. Now, for those of you looking for a 5 star resort type vacation, this probably isn't for you! Even though the accommodations were 5 star, you are staying in a small, quaint, surf town with dirt roads and no sidewalks. We knew this going in and it was what we wanted to experience! You will be living outdoors! In an open air residence! Which again, is what makes this experience that much more beautiful and enjoyable. We prepared ourselves to battle mosquitos and bugs. April also provided many different types of repellant for our use. During our stay, we kept the bedroom screens closed and it was free from insects. We were pleasantly surprised when we had no issues with mosquitos. I dont believe I saw a single one. Moths will flock to the lights, but if you keep them dimmed or off as April recommended, there are no problems. I simply cant recommended this property enough. The view from the pool is to die for and the restaurants in Santa Teresa are some of the best I have been to. Leave the pricey, extravagant resort behind and experience the culture. I can assure you, you will not be disapointed!

A magical experience at Emerald Abode

  • 5 of 5

April is a wonderful host. She honestly thinks of everything and is so generous and thorough. It was so nice to arrive late in the evening and find a full fridge with cold beer and coffee and fruit for the morning. Her guest house is indescribably beautiful. It is really well maintained, clean, comfortable. It sits in the middle of the jungle overlooking the ocean. It is private, romantic and safe.

Best Vacation Spot Ever!

  • 5 of 5

We just got back from a week-long stay at the Emerald Abode and had an amazing time. If you are looking for something different, a great location with lots to do, and a peaceful place this might would be perfect for you. First off, April is not your typical VRBO owner, but acts as a concierge. Once we booked with her, she was extremely helpful providing detailed notes for getting there, about the property, and about the Nicoya Penisula. Her recommendations were spot on for companies to use, restaurants, and activities. For us, she truly was a savior after we experienced cancelled flights, change in airports, and lost luggage on our trip down. Due to her contacts, we were able to get our luggage delivered to Santa Teresa, which we believe would have been lost without her. Plus, April does tidy up the kitchen, bathroom, and pool daily and empty your trash, something we did not expect. She is easy to work with and definitely has your best intentions in mind!

The Emerald Abode is a simple, open air, tastefully decorated place. It is basically a bedroom, bathroom, and open air kitchen/lounging area. There were no chairs inside the house, only bar stools at the counter and a hanging hammock for relaxing. The bedroom is screened in and has sliding glass doors that will close it off allowing for AC. We chose to keep the doors open at night to hear the waves and feel the breeze. We didn’t notice bugs in the bedroom, but there were bugs in the open air porch area (it is Costa Rica), especially at night and if the lights were on. We preferred to lounge in the hammock with the lights off under the fan, which kept the bugs away. To know, April is not joking when she says you need a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The roads in Santa Teresa are rough. It is a fairly steep dirt road to the Emerald Abode. We were there during the start of the rainy season, and the road had some areas that were washed out. If you are not used to driving in 4-wheel drive or on dirt roads, it may be a difficult drive to the place. We had a manual Bego which was perfect – 4 wheel drive and compact. If you are willing and able to make that drive, you will be rewarded with spectacular views. Those can’t be beat and are the perfect backdrop for lounging by the pool, eating breakfast (lunch/dinner/drinks), and from the bedroom. Sunsets…wow. Overall, loved Santa Teresa. Quaint town with lots to do – snorkeling, surfing, hiking, waterfalls, fishing, great food and people from all over the world.

Owner's Response: I truly appreciate this wonderful review and recap of another great vacation. this year i have seen many unexpected delays coming from Texas, due to a lot of unusual weather conditions, and i know how difficult and disappointing it can be with delayed flights and lost luggage. when things go wrong i know it helps to have someone at the other end representing your best interest, and I'm happy and available to assist my guests in every step of the way. Some guests want total assistance and my concierge services, and others prefer less involvement.. whatever your desires to help create a great vacation, I'm happy to oblige and happy to share my little piece of Costa Rica Paradise.

Your Dream Vacation Awaits Elsewhere

  • 1 of 5

I do not recommend this property unless you like being dirty and sleeping and eating with a plethora bugs. I would describe this as open-air. There are only two walls with no openings to the outside. If you don't want to be swarmed with bugs, go elsewhere. The screens on the bedroom do not keep out bugs even if religiously closed. There were bugs in the bed at night, and dead bugs between my boyfriend and I in the sheets in the morning. The bathroom is also open air. I did not sit on the toilet seat due to bugs. As for the kitchen, you cannot cook without bugs galore and enjoy wiping the counter of bugs in the morning with the one dish towel you get. I had to leave. I am not one for camping. We stayed at three other places in Costa Rica during this trip, including another in Santa Teresa, and we did not have the same issue with bugs.

Please know you will get one set of towels to last you a week. Normally okay, but it is hot and buggy. Also, the jacuzzi was discolored. Not knowing what it was, I would not sit in there.

Most disturbing was how the owner was unprofessional. When we talked the day of our arrival, she told me she was not doing okay. Not what you want to hear when you are on your way to have a carefree, fun vacation. She also lives on the property and will yell up to you--so much for privacy. Additionally, when I told her about the bugs, she claimed she saw no evidence of bugs (small and black and could not be photographed against the dark wood) the next afternoon and asked me the "REAL reason I left". I have received no resolution from her or HomeAway.

There are some great places in Santa Teresa that are clean with great views, privacy, and wonderful people. Your dream vacation awaits you elsewhere.

Owner's Response: for all those future guests that are reading this, let me tell you how disappointing i was to get a text in the late afternoon that my guests had left the property less than 24hrs upon check in, without any word or complaint to me personally (and i was available all morning). Giving me No opportunity to address any of their issues. hard to be called unprofessional when there is no opportunity to correct what they see as a problem. I'm super sorry that these guests where not aware that the kitchen & bathroom is open air concept, i believe the house pictures and description made this VERY CLEAR. My guests have booked the EA because of the open air concept, and appreciate and enjoy being in & with nature. The issue of insects has NEVER been an issue in the 2 1/2 years i have been renting my new home. This region of Costa Rica is a DRY TROPICAL RAIN FOREST meaning less rain than the rest of the country, with less rain comes LESS bugs, and why so many big celebrities and wealthy vacationers love our area as a vacation spot. yes it is completely possible to close all doors and windows in the bedroom to get a bug free & comfy zone at night, with a/c for extra luxury. i realize some guests have a very low tolerance of bugs, so i have the property smoked out every 4 weeks. I also supply bug spray and coils and can offer extra protection in the way of a mosquito net for the bed, but to date i have yet to have a complaint about the insects. For most of the world insects are a part of life and maybe you would not be reading this unpleasant review if i had given back their money as their text demanded. To be specific about their other complaints, there are always extra towels available (and the house has 3 sets for each guests upon check in). a Clean house ? i always point out how bug free and clean the house is Upon check in, and these guests agreed that the house was clean and free of bugs, & we provide a lovely daily tidy up service. Privacy is always an important point, so the daily tidy up service, & pool & walkway clearing is ALWAYS done when guests are out & Very Respectfully. the infinity plunge pool was painted black so it does not stand out against nature, and so far everyone has enjoyed it. here at the EA you get first hand nature and CR adventure, so people that love nature and adventure will continue to love the Emerald Abode. as i have said before, ' you can't take the Nature out of Costa Rica, thank goodness'.

No better Honeymoon destination!!!

  • 5 of 5

Honeymoon or just a vacation, the Emerald Abode was the PERFECT place to stay! And let me tell you why...

-April was incredibly helpful before we even booked. She answered all my questions about getting there from the airport, about the town, car rental accomodations, etc...anything and everything that would help me make my decision to book here. Once we booked, she was still very helpful in answering all of my nit-picky detailed questions, I felt very prepared for our trip. She helped in arranging our taxi from the Tambor airfield to Santa Teresa, and even had the taxi driver prepared to drop us by the ATV rental to pick that up and we followed him with our luggage up to the rental property.

-The house is beautiful! Open air, great views from every room in the house, and super secluded. April's house is just down the hill, but you still have tons of privacy. I particularly loved the open-air shower, super refreshing!

-Santa Teresa is such a fun little town! Tourist-y enough that you can get around without knowing much (or any) Spanish, but still authentic enough that you actually get the feeling of travelling outside the country. You aren't just in an American-ized city in another country.

-It might have been the time of year we went (I think it was the beginning of the "rainy season"...even though the week we were there the weather was PERFECT, only rained/stormed at night), but most of the beaches were so quiet and unoccupied. A few times, my husband and I were the only ones on the beach!

-The ocean water was the perfect temperature! Never too cold, even in the evening, and still refreshing in the heat of the day!

-Snorkeling at the volcanic rocks was super fun

-Day trip to Tortuga Island was awesome, they have snorkeling gear for you, but once they drop you off at the beach for the afternoon they won't let you take the gear with you (So bring April's with you if you want to snorkel more around the beach!). The travel guides were very professional, fun, and helpful. And the lunch they provided was delicious!

-Hiking the waterfalls at Montezuma is a MUST -- sitting under the waterfall was my husband and I's #1 favorite memory of the trip. Hike up to the 2nd and 3rd and swing on the rope swing and jump off the cliffs!

-Surf Lessons at Kina Surf Shop -- YES!

-Get coffee from The Roastery, Gary is awesome & has fun suggestions, and the coffee is delicious!

-Eat at Caracolas and Habaneros, our 2 favs and sunset views on the beach during dinner!

Owner's Response: it's always wonderful to have such amazing Honeymooners and guests spend their vacation at the Emerald Abode. And there is no better feeling than to help them organize and plan out what kind of vacation they are looking for. Almost every guests that has stayed here has never been to Costa Rica before, so what better way to introduce them to our Tropical Paradise then to assist them right from the beginning. i created an ebooklet that i send to all inquiry's that is packed full of all kinds of information on the fastest and easiest ways to get to the Nicoya Peninsula, as well as other helpful hints about car rentals, money exchange, driving directions, and much more. If you are looking for an adventure, you have come to the right country ! thank you Michelle for sharing in this review all the wonderful memories and recommendation you have for my future guests.. you guys are the best ! cheers !
