My husband and I were born and raised in Michigan. We both love the water and the sandy beaches and can't imagine living anywhere else. We have 3 children, 2 grandchildren and many siblings who live in Michigan as well. We will always call Michigan our home.
Micki ONeil purchased this cabin in 2008
We have traveled the state visiting lakes and campgrounds. After many years of exploring we purchased this cabin in 2008 and hope to retire here when we are ready. In our opinion, Higgins Lake is the most beautiful lakes in the state, with friendly people, shallow shore lines and deep centerways for boating and fishing. This lake has it all.
We chose this property because of the large lot and the wrap around deck. We have had many days of playing games, eating meals and sharing campfire stories together.
Many of the other cabins on this lake have very small lots and we wanted to have a little more privacy. It also has a long driveway with ample room to park, and with many family members this is an added convenience for us to entertain.
It’s a challenge to find a property that fits multiple families for a reunion - but this place has plenty of free space, sleeping accommodations, large eating area plus a massive deck to hang out on – it worked great for our large family. Micki was great to work with, very accommodating and willing to go that little extra step to ensure you are not worried about the rental but rather focus on the vacation! When we arrived everything was as explained with no surprises, we walked right in and felt at home. If you have kids then this is the place – with the large game room they were entertained for hours or just hang out in the large yard and have s’mores!!
Great house and great hospitality. Thank you Micki for making things easy for my group.
We took a vacation here with extended family during July and it was a great stay! The house is built so it stays relatively cool, even in the summer heat. The deck, yard, and fire pit are amazing for spending an evening outside relaxing with family. Don't forget to check out the games and chairs in the shed! On a rainy day there was plenty of room for people to spread out (rec room was great)! It is a quick walk down to the lake with a swimming area and little dock as well as a playground my toddler loved. It is a nice neighborhood to just take a stroll through, especially along the lake. It is also a quick drive over to South Higgins State Park! There is also a fantastic miniature golf place just a few minutes away.
Micki, the owner, is more than accommodating! She answered all of my questions in a timely manner, gave us a useful welcome packet, made sure firewood was delivered before our arrival, and was great to work with.
We stayed at this cottage over Memorial Day weekend. First the weather was perfect! The cottage is clean and comfortable. The outdoor fire pit and wrap around deck are great features to enjoy. We used this as the perfect location to enjoy up north Michigan. Mackinaw Island is just two hours away. So we spent the day on the island golfing and being a tourist. We also golfed at the local Fox Run Country Club. The course is a bit of a challenge, but the price was right! Enjoyed walking down to Higgins Lake from the cottage in the evening. All in all a great location and comfortable amenities!
Our cabin is approximately 6 blocks from Higgins Lake. The blocks are about 200 feet deep, so it's a nice, short walk. Just a few blocks from our cabin, on the corner of McKinley and Sam-O-Set, is a public park with beach access, a playground and grills for families to use. The park also has a few parking spots for those who wish to travel by car.
The cabin is located between the DNR boat launch and the South State Park on the Southwest side of the lake, taking about 7 minutes to get to either location. The South State Park has many amenities, boat rentals, picnic tables and a store.
Roscommon County allows ATVs to drive on non-state roads. This means you can bring your ATV and drive it from the house to nearly any location around the lake.
Our cabin is also located near many parcels of state land for hunting. Hunters are welcome!
Higgins Lake has crystal clear water and has been designated one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. For local information and events, visit the Pure Michigan link: http://www.michigan.org/city/higgins-lake/
