Jim Meadows and Joni Meadows are brother and sister who grew up in San Clemente, Ca. I moved to Maui in 1987 and the family came to visit a year later. While on vacation the family spent time in Hana and fell in love with it. Shortly after vacation our Mother Jackie as well as my brothers all moved to Maui. We bought property in Kihei as well as Hana. Mom lived out the rest of her life in Hana, and we got to enjoy the family property over the years. Now, Jim and I are managing the property and I live here in Hana full time. We are blessed to call this our home and look forward to sharing this wonderful part of Maui with many.
Joni Meadows/ Jim Meadows purchased this house in 1988
This was always our 'getaway' from the other side of the island, and to spend time with our Mom. A beautiful property with a stunning ocean view and the quiet serenity that Hana always has. A family home with a lot of love.
This property is know around town as the house with the bridge! It sits on a half acre full of tropical flowers, fruits, and singing birds. Across the street is the Hana ranch and we see cows grazing and pheasants nesting. A huge banyan tree across the street shades the driveway as you pull into the property.
We really enjoyed our time here. It's right in town and has an amazing ocean view. Loved listening to the ocean at night. We sat out on the lanai at sunset with some wine, made dinner in the well stocked kitchen (pots/pans, spices, etc - you need to bring your own food). If you've never been to Hana, there are only a few restaurant options, so having a place to make your own meals is helpful. I think it's one of the only places in Hana that allows dogs, which was perfect for us - the dogs loved the little side yard they could hang out in while we were there. Oh, and the reviews that say the king bed is really comfortable - it's true! We will definitely be back. Thanks Joni!!
Our family of 4 stayed began our vacation by driving the road to Hana. Many said we were crazy to start our trip with that infamous drive, but it couldn't have been better. By arriving at noon and getting lunch in Paia it was perfect timing. Most people had already started their drive to Hana by that time and so there was no traffic at all.
After enjoying the beauty along the way we were welcomed by Joni and Ha upon arrival. They had just harvested fresh coconuts which the graciously shared with us during checkin. The property is nicely decorated and comfortable. There is a great deck with chairs to enjoy beautiful views of the bay. There is also a nice gazebo with lights which we enjoyed a family card game one night. The kitchen was stocked and adequate for all our needs and the master bed was far more comfortable than any hotel bed I've used. The master bedroom boasts the same view of the bay and after hearing a few roosters in the morning we enjoyed watching the sunrise each morning.
Keep in mind this is not a resort property but a charming location in the lush surroundings of Hana. It is also within 30 minutes or less of many beautiful beaches and the Haleakala National Park where we enjoyed a hike through a bamboo forest to a 400+ ft waterfall.
After 2 nights in Hana we stayed 5 more nights on the main part of Maui at a chain hotel. We enjoyed that time as well but there was something different about Hana and the quiet getaway Joni provided my family. Thanks Joni and Ha for starting our vacation the best way possible. Scott & Laurie
Joni was a wonderful host. Very accommodating & friendly. They respected our privacy if we wanted it, but were readily available with advice where to eat, what to see etc & where always just a shout or a phone call away. Note & expect that this is in an older family Hana home right in town & the rental is a main level 2 bedroom / 1 Bath setup with a large sitting room. The 2nd Queen bed is in a nook & not entirely private, (just a curtain separates it from the hallway to the 1 full bathroom. Nice Full kitchen fairly well equipped & counter with stools to eat at.
There is also HUGE amounts of lovely outdoor seating options including a beautiful fenced side yard that is very well maintained & quite lush & relaxing as well. Joni & Ha were great hosts. They do have a 4 dog "family" so it may be better if you are comfortable with all very friendly dogs being around, they are not in your space or lanai but in the fenced & gated side yard. There is plenty of beach toys, towels & equipment for making day trips to Hana Bay, to Wai'anapanapa State Park (Black Sand beach & a cool little lava tube) ) or to some of the other less crowded beaches in the area. Hana Meadows was also the perfect base to get an early AM head start to the Waimoku Falls & Pipiwai trail above O'heo Gulch (~ another 20 mins away at Seven Sacred pools) & it was the best hike of my life. 2 miles in & 650 elevation. It is a solid moderate hike to be sure, you need good sturdy hiking or running shoes & expect to get a little muddy but the waterfalls, streams, bridges, bamboo forest & 300 foot sheer waterfall at the end made it all well worth the effort (just get there early in the AM to avoid the crowds that come later morning). Joni & Braddah "Ha" will also give you a mean game of ping pong, if that's to your interest.
We loved it all & we thank Joni & Ha for an amazing, great, authentic & truly Hana experience.
There is a special charm to Joni Meadows' home. From the ocean view out the front bedroom windows, to the deck overlooking Hana Bay to the live banana tree and the "pick-your-own-bananas" hanging outside our door, to the small menagerie of friendly doofus dogs upstairs, to the outdoor shower secreted within a tropical bower, to the take-your-pick array of outdoor toys in the garage, it was all delightful, welcoming and comfortable. Our 10-year-old daughter loved the back bedroom which she could curtain off for semi-privacy, and we parents awoke each morning in the master bed watching the sun come up over the ocean through the wall of windows overlooking the sea.
The kitchen had all the stuff you need if you're going to eat in, and Joni had the right advice for where to eat out, and where to do everything else there is to do in Hana.
There's a funky charm to the whole place - don't expect five-star luxury - but the hospitality is heartwarming, the location is ideal and Joni is authentically real. We loved it. Just be careful backing out of the driveway.
Thanks for a very well kitted out and comfortable apartment. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with you!
Over all it is a please stay. Spacious and has everything we need. from cooking to beach equipment. It is nice and clean. A little bit noisy from the neighbour and the road during our stay. We got a lot of bug bites though. Not sure it is from mosquito or not. insect repellant did not help.
