McHose). Seven Oaks is also just a short drive where you can ski and snowboard in winter and rent canoes for a scenic ride down the Des Moines River in summer and fall.

History of the J.B. McHose Home:

J.B. McHose was the owner of a brick and tile manufacturing company in Boone. McHose was a progressive leader who led many projects to improve the community. An admirer of Teddy Roosevelt, McHose’ main interest was the development of parks for the enjoyment of the public. McHose and his wife donated the land and funds to the city with the intent to build a city park. McHose Park is the product of their generosity and is used year-round by hundreds of people. There is also a statue of Theodore Roosevelt in the park. Be sure to find it!

J.B. McHose built his home in 1910 with bricks from his brick and tile factory. The home is a duplex, but at the time was called a ”double-house”. With two four-bedroom homes (a West Unit and East Unit) that are 'book-matched' together in the center the home affords a great deal of living space. McHose and his wife lived in the East Unit while his mother lived in the West Unit. THIS LISTING IS FOR THE WEST UNIT.

The exterior of the J.B. McHose House features hand-chiseled brick to give the appearance of rough stone, deep red mortar joints, horizontal bands of sandstone on the front and sides, low hip roofs with deep eaves, and “blind” entrances to each unit. These features were hallmarks of the Prairie School Style of Architecture that was appearing in the Midwest shortly after the turn of the century.

The J.B. McHose House West Unit offers approximately 2,000 square feet of living space. The first floor has an entry with a foyer, a hall with a beautiful open staircase, a large living room and a large dining room. The house also features a galley kitchen complete with dishes and cookware. All you need to do is bring the food! The second floor features four bedrooms and a bathroom with walk-in shower. On a hot summer day you can enjoy a cold glass of lemonade on the wonderful front porch.

Please be our guest at the J.B. McHose House West Unit!

Family Holiday Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We chose this as the location for our family holiday get together. We didn't have the space we needed to host everybody at home but found that space in a location that was easy for everyone to get to. All of the bedrooms were utilized as 6 people stayed in the home and the kitchen was everything we needed it to be. There was plenty of space for our group of 11 adults and 3 small kids for most of the day and it was nice to have everyone seated around the same table for our family meal. We received compliments from the members of our family as they expressed their gratitude for one of the better holiday events we've had. We will keep the house in mind as we plan future events. Thank you so much Donovan for sharing your welcoming home with us and for your wonderful hospitality!

  • 5 of 5

Great house in a great small town of Boone IA. The house is perfect place to bring a family or a group of guys on a golf trip. Highly recommend it!! Owner treated us like royalty and even gave us a tour of the house with a little history on the original owners.

Historic Boone home

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a brief but fun stay in the West unit of the home while attending a wedding in the area. We all enjoyed a walk through the home including a history of the home and surrounding area as well as suggested places to eat given by Mr. Olson. There was plenty of room for the 5 of us to sit and review plans and map out our stay and how to get everywhere. The house was clean and the beds were comfortable. A short walk to the Dutch Oven Bakery in the morning for breakfast was also a highlight and we would recommend that to anyone staying at the home.

The Olson's were friendly, inviting and easy to communicate with. I also got a peak at the East unit from Mrs. Olson in the morning which is another beautiful unit inside. This is the place for history and a good nights sleep; just what we were looking for.

Beautiful home

What an absolutely beautiful property. It was clean and comfortable but the real draw is the remarkable history and craftsmanship of the house itsself. Lots to do for a few days in Boone if you like antiquing or hiking. We will be returning.
