About Jeff Hornacek

A Mechanical Engineer in the Texas oil industry, I moved to Silicon Valley in the 80s to ride the computer wave. It was then that I first experienced Yosemite National Park. With frequent visits over the next 2 decades competing with my other love, skydiving, I finally sold my parachute, committed to Yosemite and started living at Yosemite Refuge in the early 2000s. While doing countless hikes all over the park, I also started perfecting my backpacking gear, leading to my co-founding a backpacking gear company from this house called Trail Designs. I hope you find as much happiness here as I have. Between myself and my neighbors Jeff and Melissa who I've asked to help with your stay, we'll work to ensure you have everything you need.

Jeff Hornacek purchased this house in 2002

Why Jeff Hornacek chose Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is quite simply the most breathtaking place on earth. Covering an area the size of Rhode Island, you will find some of the largest waterfalls in North America, the most spectacular granite monoliths in the world, Giant Sequoias which can't be found anywhere else on earth, and the list just goes on and on. With over 750 miles of trails, the opportunity to see these sites in addition to extensive wildlife (bear, deer, marmots, coyote, etc) is unparalleled. The question isn't why live in Yosemite, it's why wouldn't you live here!

What makes this house unique

Given the huge size of Yosemite, and the countless things to see and do, you want to be in the middle of it all when you wake up in the morning. Starting your day off fighting through traffic, sitting in line at the entrance station, and driving half the day from a gateway city just to get started wastes precious time and energy. Yosemite Refuge is in Yosemite West.....right in the middle of the most popular sites.....whether it's the waterfalls and huge granite of Yosemite Valley to the north, the Giant Sequoias of Mariposa Grove to the south, or the breathtaking views from Glacier Point to the east, you're perfectly positioned to explore them all. Add to it the unparalleled seclusion and privacy found at Yosemite Refuge allows you to truly get away from it all and recharge. The 2 car garage has easy access from the street, leading to 55 steps meandering down the hillside to Yosemite Refuge's private setting, providing comfortable seclusion from the rest of the community. Also, located at 6000' elevation, it's cooler than the low lying towns and valley.

Great Yosemite get away!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The home is perfect for a family or 2 couples. Great living room with cozy gas fireplace. The views are lovely and it’s great to be close to Yosemite Valley. Read the book provided by the owner, great local hiking and wildlife information. Check the weather in winter months, we had four wheel drive and needed it to navigate the snowy ❄️ conditions. We will stay here on our next Yosemite adventure🌲?🏔?

A Nice place to stay

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our time at Yosemite Refuge, and they had great information about hikes less frequented. Two things it would have been good to know: There are 54 stair steps to get to the front door, and 9 more to the living room. Also it took about 25 - 30 minutes to get most places of interest; so lots of driving. We had six staying there, and the two air mattresses with sheets available, and they were great for the two children, but there isn't much room for them. There is a futon, but no sheets for it, so we didn't use it. If you bring sleeping bags, I suppose that would work. With those things in mind, we really did enjoy this home.

Owner's Response: Dear Tony, Thank you for taking the time to let us and future guests know about your stay at the Yosemite Refuge. We are happy to know that you enjoyed the Refuge. Regarding your comments about the stairs and drive times to other parts of the Park, we would like to point out that those things are mentioned on the VRBO site of the Refuge. In addition, there are pictures showing the exterior stairs as well as those inside. We encourage potential guests to look at all of the pictures and read the information about the Refuge before making a reservation. To all potential guests looking at the Refuge for your Yosemite stay, please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. All the best, Melissa

The yosemite refuge is lovely, well maintained, clean etc. - wonderful views.

There were some minor issues with misunderstanding how to get in, but the manager showed up and resolved them.

Very conveniently located home.

  • 4 of 5

We spent a lovely three days at this beautiful mountain home. It is located conveniently in Yosemite Park and allowed us more opportunity to hike and explore. We could enjoy the opportunities in Yosemite Valley yet go back to the Yosemite Refuge at night for a private, restful night.

While there is a long flight of steps into the home, it was more than worth it. The home is comfortable and well equipped. We also enjoyed the peaceful sunsets from the back deck where we ate dinner.

I would recommend Yosemite Refuge for this wonderful balance between relative closeness to the activity and yet far enough away to relax during downtimes.

Close to everything we wanted to do in Yosemite

  • 4 of 5

We were very comfortable and enjoyed the view from the house. The house is close to the sites we wanted to visit in the park. It is supplied with everything we needed for a four night stay. Our only complaint is that it felt cut off from the world. Internet is very minimal and no live television service.
