Lovely, quaint fisherman's cottage

  • 5 of 5

Ideal setting. Only a minutes walk to the beach. Very clean and comfortable.

Five minutes walk to seafront restaurant that does great breakfasts and lunches.

Ten minute walk to one of the best fish and chip shops we've been too offering local hake, squid, scallops and samphire.

Five minute walk to start of SouthWest coastal path. Fantastic views and can visit the Portland quarry sculpture park. Good spot for butterflies and lizards.

Also recommend tours of Portland Castle and Portland Bill.

As a family we didn't need to venture further than the Isle for the whole week.

Cosy near beach

  • 4 of 5

The house was cosy and couldn't have been closer to the beach. Quite basic facilities but fine for us for a few days.

A Jurassic Gem

  • 5 of 5

A warm welcome from Roy greeted on our slightly late arrival. The cottage is everything you could wish for. Cosy, homely, well equipped and brilliantly located! Although we were only there for a short break we managed to visit Lulworth Cove, Weymouth and do a tour of Portland itself, which is well worth it. Two pubs within walking distance, both were friendly and Chesil Chippy a must! I am sure we will be back sometime soon.

Rather dark - cleaning could have been better.

  • 3 of 5

Little thing could have been improved upon - no toast rack , only 2 hand towels between 4 people. No grill pan. Shelf in fridge broken.

Quaint, cosy cottage, with loads of character from over the decades, adjacent to the sea.

  • 5 of 5

Just spent three nights at this lovely character cottage, own private parking off road next to the cottage with plenty of other spaces literally to the front of the cottage which I believe are free to park. Roy, the owner was brilliant he offered a quick exchange of keys whilst showing us around and left us to soak up the mixed character of the various rooms spread over three flours. Some modern and some very old rooms with chunks of Portland stone surrounding the fireplace in the lounge and various other places within the cottage.

Everything worked first time, loads of hot water when required from the gas heated system and from both electrically heated showers, although we didn't use the oven or Hobbs as we ate out each day twice in the Cove Inn a minutes walk from the property but please make sure you book a table as the bar area is small but plenty of chairs and tables if you are eating, and outside tables overlooking Chesil beach weather permitting..

You can't see the sea from the cottage as it sits safely below the sea defence wall but you can certainly hear it from the first floor double back bedroom. Location wise it's perfect for walks which can follow the coastline to Portland Bill and access to the sea and stoney beech around a 30 second walk from the cottage

In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed our comfortable three nights which went far to quickly and would without hesitation recommend to anyone looking to stay and tour the area from Dolphin Cottage..

Thanks again Roy for a cheerful handover on arrival and for maintaining a clean, cosy, well kept cottage which reflected your owners direct rental pages perfectly, if we are looking to visit the area again we will be back to Dolphin Cottage without hesitation..

The Isle of Portland is located on the south coast of Dorset and forms part of the World Heritage Coastline, known as the 'Jurassic Coast'. Famous for centuries as the home of Portland stone (used by Christopher Wren on St Paul's Cathedral and numerous other London churches). Portland is now evolving into a centre for leisure activities including fishing, diving, bird watching, rock climbing, walking and a variety of water sports, including sailing at the newly opened National Sailing Academy, venue for the sailing events at the 2012 Olympic Games. Portland is made up of several village communities which together offer a range of amenities, however Weymouth with its picturesque harbour and its award winning sandy beach is only 6 miles away. Excellent bus service from Portland to Weymouth.

Other Activities: Bird Watching and rock climbing
