Great location for a family holiday

  • 4 of 5

Had a great week at Dolphin Cottage. Roy very helpful. Kitchen well equipped but lots of choice to eat out nearby - recommend Quiddles, Chesil Chippie, Portland Pizza and Billy Winters.

Comfortable cottage, but some TLC required to make this place a home away from home.

  • 2 of 5

Overall we enjoyed our holiday, but we were lucky with the weather and did not spend much time at the cottage. I found that I didn't mind it too much in the evenings once it had gone dark and we put lamps on, but during the day it felt rather dreary and depressing. We live in an old cottage, which has been well maintained and updated, so the contrast for us was very disappointing. Others may feel differently and if you are looking for a reasonably priced house for a family beach holiday, this could be okay for you. I've written down what I felt were the key points below:

For:

- great location, right next to the beach and with good pub and cafe on the sea front

- spacious rooms (we slept 7 adults comfortably for 3 nights)

- very clean

- comfortable beds with nice cotton bedding

- modern bathrooms

- secure courtyard (tiny, but big enough to let a dog out)

- owner was helpful

Against:

- overall feeling and smell of damp throughout the cottage, but particularly bad downstairs

- downstairs is quite dark and dreary ( due to location behind sea walls and furnishings)

- decor/furnishings are very tired and in dire need of updating

- general maintenance seemed poor, peeling paint, cracked windows etc

- some windows could not be opened, which was a real problem with the damp and when it got hot

- no real space to sit outdoors (although 4 chairs are provided, there is literally only this amount of space and it would not be pleasant)

- limited space to hang out washing, although there is a washing machine, you could not hang out a full load

- no dishwasher

Owner's Response: Please note this cottage dates back 350 years, it sounds strange but it has window openings that are relevant to the period it was built which does add to it being darker inside than a new 2015 property. When this guest booked the cottage it was booked for two adults, not seven adults and a dog. The smell referred to is from the dog which I will strive to remove before next season. I have re-turned the guest deposit as I always do and hope it helps to fuel there £80,000 Range Rover.

Lovely cottage in a lovely setting.

  • 5 of 5

Roy and cottage were both welcoming. Everything we needed within cottage (except pegs but I took some after reading previous review so not a problem) and a stones throw from beach, which was useful for popping back to for lunch, if the pub was full. Recommend booking a table at the cove pub, as it is very popular. Weymouth and its neighbouring attractions were only a short drive. Recommend Nothe fort, we went for the morning but stayed most of the day. Even our 8 year old didn't get bored! Something for everyone locally and the cottage is a great place to head back to for a quiet evening after busy days.

Thanks Roy, a nice stay and you booked great weather for us too, which was a bonus!

Lovely house in great location

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for my family. Great position next to Chesil Beach. We had fun there swimming and throwing pebbles into the sea. Explored Portland and easy to visit Weymouth, Bridport, Studland and Durdledoor.

Dolphin Cottage

  • 3 of 5

The cottage was basic, but we managed to have a nice week with our four children. The cottage could do with some redecoration and finishing off in parts where work has been done. The kitchen could do with some more pegs! The cottage was in a great location near the sea. We all loved Portland Bill!!!

The Isle of Portland is located on the south coast of Dorset and forms part of the World Heritage Coastline, known as the 'Jurassic Coast'. Famous for centuries as the home of Portland stone (used by Christopher Wren on St Paul's Cathedral and numerous other London churches). Portland is now evolving into a centre for leisure activities including fishing, diving, bird watching, rock climbing, walking and a variety of water sports, including sailing at the newly opened National Sailing Academy, venue for the sailing events at the 2012 Olympic Games. Portland is made up of several village communities which together offer a range of amenities, however Weymouth with its picturesque harbour and its award winning sandy beach is only 6 miles away. Excellent bus service from Portland to Weymouth.

Other Activities: Bird Watching and rock climbing
