Our cottage is a lovely Hawaiian beach style home. We just completed a renovation which we know you will enjoy.
Fresh linens, beach chairs and umbrellas. cable TV and a outdoor shower, Just a few of the amenities we have provided.
Our comfortable, Hawaiian-style cottage is across the street from the tide pools and ocean access in the quiet community of Puako. Over the years, we have collected surfboards and other bits of old Hawaii to add charm and privacy to this cozy little place.
The cottage includes a fully stocked kitchen with comfortable seating and everything you need to prepare a lovely dinner for two. The bedroom has queen-size bed and quality linens. The bathroom is large, but incase you feel like more room or a bit of romance, there is also an outside shower enclosed by tropical plants and flowers.
This is very comfortable and affordable for two people.
We also have an apt below this rental..one bedroom, sm kitchen and living space.
We are retired now. raised our son and daughter on the Big Island and love to travel between the Islands and Colorado where we have family.
Puako is a very special place to us and our children who are finding their way back after college and work on the Mainland.
That makes us happy, especially now that we have a grandchild!
peg purchased this cottage in 1972
We fell in love with Puako in the early 70's when we spent a few weeks here. Found a real-estate agent and bought this property. moved a few years later and here we are.
we loved our stay here - our hosts were very graceful and accommodating
the apartment was comfortable and spotless and very well equipped - we had everything we needed and more!
we will definitely return!
We stayed at this lovely upstairs apartment for 9 days in December - it worked so well for us on so many levels. First, we were in Puako and not in Kona (we didn't really know what that meant until we went to Kona but it means it's peaceful, away from the fray but near some good restaurants (15 min drive), near some lovely beaches, and very quiet). Second, the house itself is very easy to be in - we were looking for an escape and the owners were super respectful of that - they helped us when we asked for help but left us alone otherwise. Their guide and suggestion book was so good - we ate at and visited most of the places in the booklet. The house is light, airy and has everything we needed for cooking and living. There are so many fans (4 ceiling fans and 3 floor fans) we never even thought about air conditioning and we are wusses with heat (being from the Pacific Northwest). Everything was very clean and comfortable. We borrowed beach gear - bamboo mats, bikes, boogie board, etc... - and enjoyed ourselves at multiple beaches near the house. Thirdly it was very convenient... We explored the rest of the Big Island from here - all the way to Hawaii Volcanoes via the Saddle Road, to Hawi up North, along the north coast towards Hilo, and down south to Captain Cooks Monument. But when we ate out we ate 10 minutes North of the house or at the Fairmount Orchid... all in all we felt we had easy access to things without having to fight ( or hear) the throngs. Our only regret is not realizing that when people say you should go snorkeling in the morning... they mean in the morning before 9 AM... it was always a bit rough by the time we got there (closer to 1030 or 11). We did snorkel but not in Puako, which I hear is great snorkeling. We loved being able to walk to the beach and meeting others out on the street. We would so recommend this - when we return we will try to stay here again. Thank you for the perfect week!
We loved staying at this charming cottage for a week in mid-September. While staying in the Waikoloa Resort area last year, we discovered Puako Beach Road and knew this is where we wanted to be. The area's beaches and reefs are so lovely we stayed close by this trip. It's within walking distance of Paniau (a fantastic place to explore the outside of the reef - huge drop-offs) and just across the street from other easy access points. The street itself is interesting - a mix of traditional Hilo family cottages and new homes owned by the rich/famous.
The cottage is spacious and light filled. It is set up perfectly and we loved the breezes. Our favorite place to hang was the front room - great for relaxing after "hard" days of snorkeling and swimming.
What really made our stay special was our host, Bud, and his furry accomplices, Sancho and Fiji. Bud greeted us shortly after we arrived and we shared beers on his beautiful patio. We celebrated two sunsets with him and his warm neighborhood friends on the beach across the street. We've been home for a week and miss everyone,
There are other rentals along Puako Beach Road, but after our lovely experience and looking at the other places in person, we recommend choosing Hale Nula. Please don't forget to buy reef-friendly sunscreen at the General Store, and don't step on the coral :o)
On a previous visit to the Big Island we had stayed a bit south of Kailua-Kona, so on this trip we wanted to get farther north in order to see more of the beautiful Kohala region as well as the island's eastern coastline. A colleague who had lived on the island recommended looking in Puako, and this rental didn't disappoint. As others have noted, the cottage itself is beautifully decorated and well-appointed. A reefy beach is across the road, and other beach options are a short bike ride or very short drive. Peg and Bud were exceedingly friendly and ready with ideas on restaurants and sightseeing. We would definitely go back the next time we plan a trip to the Big Island.
My husband and I stayed in this lovely cottage in April. This second floor apartment is beautifully appointed with lots of light and windows, allowing sea breezes to keep the space cool and comfortable. The kitchen has everything you need and Peg and Bud are wonderful hosts. The property is located across the street from a beautiful beach. We enjoyed watching the turtles and exploring the tide pools, snorkeling AND the amazing sunsets. My husband rented a road bike from a near-by bike shop and enjoyed riding the wide-shoulders of the highways close to Puako. I explored parts of the island in a rental car and found it a short drive from Puako to many places of interest. We enjoyed our adventures, but were always happy to come back to this quiet spot. We are planning a return stay and would highly recommend this delightful cottage.
I couldn't recommend this charming cottage more highly! I just returned home to Colorado after staying here for the second time, and have already booked it for next winter. Bud and Peg are delightful hosts, the unit is clean, beautiful, comfortable and well-appointed, and the location is superb. My favorite beach is a short hop across the street, where I spend hours on end scanning the tidal pools, or just sitting and reading. What a very special and magical spot! Puako is a favorite, and Peg and Bud and the neighbors are like old friends.
