About the property

The cottages have two bedrooms sleeping a maximum of 5 persons

The cottages are situated on a hillside overlooking the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, and near Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city. Built in 2006, the cottages were architect-designed to fit the character of the area, and set-up for maximum enjoyment of holidays and short breaks. They are very spacious, furnished to a high standard, and have a 4 * rating. The two bedroom cottage has one double and one twin bedroom; the three bedroom cottage has one double and two twin rooms. Off road private parking. Linlithgow, just 15 minutes by train from the heart of Edinburgh, yet the cottage enjoys a quiet rural location. The bar and restaurant of a country house hotel are next door, but the fully fitted kitchen in each cottage has everything needed for self catering, with hob, oven, fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine all included. WiFi available in all cottages. Pets by arrangement.

Linlithgow - places of interest locally.: Linlithgow Palace was the birth place of Mary Queen of Scots, cousin to Queen Elizabeth 1 of England. Mary was beheaded on the orders of Elizabeth in 1587. The magnificent Palace ruins are situated in a lovely park beside Linlithgow Loch and is open all year round.

Linlithgow was also the birth place of 'Scottie' of Star Trek fame. An exhibition of this space traveller and the history of the town can be viewed in Annet House on the Main Street.

A few miles away in Blackness, on the coast of the Firth of Forth, is Blackness Castle built in the 15th century. The castle has been well maintained and its dark corridors are reminiscent of its past as a garrison fortress and prison.

Other interesting places worth visiting within a radius of 10 miles include the Bo'Ness and Kinneil Railway (working museum), Torphichen Preceptory (Headquarters of a local Templar organisation), Cairnpapple Hill (a ceremonial and burial site dating back to 3000BC) and the Falkirk Wheel (built 2000).

Local leisure activities: The Linlithgow area boasts 4 country parks, the nearest of which is Beecraigs (3 miles from Linlithgow). Others are Muiravonside (5 miles), Almondell (10 miles) and Polkemmet (12 miles).

Family attractions suit all ages and include the Bo'Ness and Kinneil Railway (with trips on a steam train and using the original ticket office and platform); Five Sisters Zoo; Linlithgow Canal Centre; Leisure/ Sports centres in every town.

For the fishermen there are plenty of lochs located in peaceful settings. Some include Ballencrieff Fishery, Linlithgow Loch Fishing, Allandale Tarn Fishery, Bangour Trout Fishery and Morton Fishery.

The nearest golf course is a short walk from the cottage (West Lothian Golf Club), which has spectacular views of the Firth of Forth, the coastline of Fife, Edinburgh and East Lothian, the Ochil Hills and into the mountains of Perthshire. Other golf courses include Linlithgow, Bathgate, Pumpherston and Uphall.

The many walking routes include the Canal Basin.

Further afield: Edinburgh, Stirling and Glasgow are just short drives (or train journeys) away and offer visitors a huge range of historical sights, entertainment, shopping and leisure pursuits.

Just 25 miles away is Roslyn Chapel and Glen, fascinatingly depicted in The DaVinci Code. New Lanark, the birthplace of the co-operative system pioneered by Robert Owen, is only 30 miles away.

Within easy reach of the cottage are also St. Andrews in Fife, Perthshire and its hills, the Trossachs, and the towns of the Scottish Borders (Peebles, Galashiels, Hawick, Jedburgh).

We've had a very enjoyable time visiting the area and it has been a pleasure to stay in such comfortable accommodation; will highly recommend. The Scottish Black Bun was delicious!

A marvelous stay in winter

  • 5 of 5

Due to our work we had to look for a stay in central Scotland. We found the Linlithgow Cottages through the internet. The website and reviews appealed to us greatly.

And, boy, we weren't dissapointed. We came into a spic and span cleaned cottage. Fully outfitted kitchen, nice leather couches and digital TV and broadband internet connection. And best of all. A pan of leek and potato-soup in the fridge.

The perfect spot for a business/holiday working vacation. Only 1 hr from Glasgow and Perth and 30mins from Edinburgh (providing the traffic isn't congesting)

Although the bed was a bit short for me (I am 6'6") we had everynight a very good night sleep.

Unlike in our country everything was electric. We are used to gas, so that was something we needed to get used to.

In short.. a perfect stay!

Owner's Response: We are delighted that your stay in the cottage lived up to your expectations, and we hope that you had a successful work stay. Thank you very much for saying that you appreciated the soup - guests normally get home-made baking, but as the weather has been so cold we thought that a warming pot of soup would be more welcoming. We just feel that after a long journey (no matter from where) it's nice to sit down to a refreshing cup of tea/coffee and a bite to eat.

Well equiped and clean cottage

  • 5 of 5

Nice place to stay, well equiped, clean and a nice contact! I would recommend this to everyone who wants to stay in this area (to visit Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, St.Andrews, ...). The cottage has a good motorway connection (but it is still very quite!)

- Try the restaurant in the hotel next to the cottages, it has good conditions

- Visit the palace (especially when you're having children)

- look for local festivals

- you can walk to Linlithgow from the cottage

- many supermarkets there

Richmond family

  • 5 of 5

Cottage was very clean and well presented, bedrooms very spacious. We thought it was very good value for the price and we would definately recommend it.

The location was great and just what we wanted as we have got family living in the area but also wanted to be close enough to Edinburgh for sightseeing - local train service very regular and reliable.

A wonderful week in Scotland, thank you!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this cottage. It was so nice and beautiful. We found everything, we needed for fantastic holidays! There was nothing, we missed. We felt so comfortable.

The location is great, between Edinburgh and Glasgow, near the Highlands. Linlithgow is a sweet little town, we like it.

The price for the cottage was good.

If we will be another time in Scotland we will not look for another place to stay. We found it!

Thank you again!

The train service from Linlithgow to Edinburgh is every 30 minutes, and regular train services go to Stirling and Glasgow. Linlithgow Cottage is a 10 minute drive from Edinburgh airport. The road links in the area are excellent. About 1.5 miles from Junction 3 of the M9 motorway and 5 miles from the M8 motorway, the cottage is the perfect location for those who want to tour Central Scotland, Perthshire, the Kingdom of Fife and the Southern Highlands, all of which can be reached by car in half an hour or so. The nearest golf course is a five minute walk and there are numerous cycle routes surrounding the cottages. This is the ideal location for those who would like to be near Edinburgh, but out of the busy city itself.
