These delightful French properties are peacefully situated at the foot of the Black Mountains, in a beautiful rural setting with open country views, yet only five minutes from all amenities, and lots of tourist activities. Whether you are sitting by the pond watching the fish and frogs, or relaxing under a shady tree with a good book, there is an abundance of space for everyone to spread out and roam freely.
SITUATION - : The property is situated on a quiet lane which forms part of the famous pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella. With very little traffic, it is safe, peaceful and ideal for a walk or a morning jog past fields of sunflowers, vines and grazing cattle with their baby calves.
From your window you can see a wealth of wildlife such as red squirrels, hares and dozens of species of birds, including egrets, owls, kestrels, woodpeckers, kingfishers and hoopoes. Children love to feed the fish in the pond and see and hear the big green frogs.
During the warm evenings you can watch the bats accompanied by the sounds of the crickets and nightingales.
The Lauragais area is farming country and the home of the famous blue dye woad. There is a happy atmosphere about the place, in unison with its welcoming architecture – picturesque hilltop villages, lively small market towns, ancient stone farm buildings and dovecotes, all set in a rolling countryside of gentle hills, fields of sunflowers and waving corn.
Our local market is listed as one of the best in France, but within an hour’s drive you can find a different market for every day of the week. You can’t help but work up an appetite as you stroll round the colourful stalls with their beautiful displays of delicious local produce.
Every Sunday sees a choice of flea markets in the surrounding villages where the locals empty their attics of unwanted items.
Bars, cafes, bistros, brasseries, pizzerias, and restaurants - within a short drive, there is a large choice of places to eat. On the terraces of small restaurants or in grand establishments awarded Michelin stars, you can enjoy delicious characteristic specialities that reflect local produce - foie gras, duck, charcuterie and the famous cassoulet, all accompanied by excellent local wines.
Wine dominates the Languedoc region and has been produced here for more than 2000 years. Well known areas such as Minervois, Corbieres, Fitou and St Chinean.
As you drive around the Languedoc, you will see numerous signs reading 'dégustation' which means you can stop and taste wines, and if you like what you taste you buy direct from the producer, sometimes at a significant discount.
White wine enthusiasts can gather in Gaillac as this lovely small town in the Tarn boasts a dry, fruity white AOC wine.
The Smiths are English from the Maidenhead area. We are Lynne & Robin and grandson ( 6yrs) Tommie. We come from a travel industry background. We moved here to enjoy the sunshine and the peace and quiet of the countryside. Tommie attends the local school and speaks pretty good French already, whilst his Grandpa is still trying to catch up! Lynne speaks good French.
Lynne A Smith purchased this farmhouse in 2013
We bought this property because it had been superbly renovated by the previous owners - which left us nothing to do except keep up to their standards. We had no previous knowledge of the area but have definitely fallen in love with it. Calm, peaceful countryside but with so much to see and do. So many gorgeous little villages still to explore and one of the best markets in France in the nearby town.
- Wet room showers (Stables)
- LCD TV’s – English and French
- Free Wi-Fi internet access
- Covered games area, ideal in wet weather – ping pong, table football and badminton
- Outdoor space in abundance
- Ground floor accommodation suitable for persons of reduced mobility (Stables)
- Shaded terraces - both properties and poolside
I looked at many many places on the internet and this one stood out.
We loved the gardens, the embroidered sheets and the pool.

A friendly welcome and tour by the manager, Lynne. Then straight into the welcoming pool for a refreshing dip after a long hot journey. Poolside kitchen and toilet very handy with fridge for cold drinks. Cannot fault 5 star accommodation. Two very different villages within walking or cycling distance. One historic Soreze so interesting with park for children the other bustling Ravel with shops and market. Also in Ravel many festivals and fairs.
Close to a large lake for water sports and swimming. We had a great time never bored a bit of everything. Hosts there if you wanted any help.
Stunning property and fine location. Superb swimming pool and grounds. Perfect for a peaceful relaxing holiday. Played golf, plenty of courses in the area.
My sister and I celebrated our retirements at LaTerrasse and could not have had a more perfect setting and more perfect gite. Robin and Lynn and Andrea were such perfect hosts. We rented both The Stables and The Lauragais for the entire month of September. Our friends and family arrived on an d off throughout the time and we hosted outdoor dinners every night to meet and talk about our day and plan our next adventures. It was truly excellent. We had the beautiful pool to cool us off and set the stage for our evening wine and cheese get-together. Then as the sun set over the pond we moved to one or the other of the outdoor patios for a lively group dinner.
The kitchens were nicely appointed (this coming from some picky wanna-be chefs). Our hosts were always available and always helpful. They arranged watercolor classes, cooking classes and Andrea was so sweet to offer to pick up our daily baguettes whenever she went to town.
Our friends were all thrilled with their rooms. There are plenty of bathrooms and relaxing common areas. I would recommend this beautiful place to anyone coming to this area.
We were not familiar with any of this part of France. But after spending a month there, we feel it is perfectly situated to head south to the Pyrenes (Foix, Monsiguer etc) or north to Albi or west to Carcasonne.
No matter where we went, we always looked forward to the moment when pulled into the driveway and heard the crunch of the gravel that welcomed us "home" safely each night. "Home" is what this felt like. After the bustle of this city or that castle or this drive or that hike, there was no better place to settle in but this peaceful and relaxing country home. Thanks you to our hosts for a month we will never forget.
Lovely, comfortable gite and ideal for our group of six adults. No nasty surprises as the listings were spot on. The stables was well maintained and very clean. We made the most of the gites position to take trips to Carcassone, Albi and Toulouse, all within an hours drive along the scenic D roads. We also took a slightly longer day trip up into the beautiful Pyrenees and had lunch in the snowy ski resort of Soldeu. We also visited the Saturday market in Revel which is well worth attending if you want to see and purchase local food produce.
Stephanie and Jules could not have been more welcoming and helpful throughout the week. The gite is in a beautiful, quiet rural location - perfect for visitors of all ages. We would have no hesitation in recommending a holiday at La Terrasse.
The Bowens, Powers and Ellards
We recently spent a week at the Stables and we couldn't be more pleased with our holiday choice.
The gite has been tastefully restored and furnished to a very high standard, importantly, it is also kitted out with pretty much everything you might need whilst you are there. The pool and garden areas are truly wonderful, with far reaching views of the Black Mountains providing the perfect backdrop. In fact the location met all our requirements - blissful countryside, but with shops, villages and places of interest only a short drive away. Our 3 year old son had a whale of a time running free and exploring the grounds, it was a real wrench to leave when the week was up!
Thanks for a marvellous break,
Stuart, Clare & Angus
