About the property

4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 8 comfortably

This beautifully simple four-bedroomed house is set on the edge of a pretty village in the heart of France’s sun-drenched Médoc region, and is ideally positioned for a family or group holiday. Head for the golden beaches of the Atlantic, which lie only 4 miles away, cycle, surf, horse-ride, or indulge in a tour of some world-famous vineyards along the Route des Chateaux. Designed for easy living and complete relaxation, this light and spacious house offers all mod cons indoors, with a bespoke barbeque, swimming pool and large garden completing the open-air living space. The historical city of Bordeaux offers international transport links only an hour away to the south, while the ferry link at Le Verdon to the north offers access to La Rochelle and beyond.

Sun-seekers: With the Atlantic coast just four miles away, and stretching some 200 kilometres from Soulac-Sur-Mer at the top of the Gironde peninsular down to Biarritz near the Spanish border, what better way for families or friends to spend a day, enjoying relaxed fun and sunning on the golden sands of the uncrowded beaches nearby. For the explorers, there are plenty of opportunities to find your own deserted stretch of sand through the pine forests and off the beaten track. However, if you prefer to have amenities closer to hand, the resorts of Montalivet and Soulac-Sur-Mer are ideal, providing safe bathing as well as bars, restaurants and shops.

Action-packers: The Atlantic coast has long been a favourite with surfers, and it is no coincidence that Lacanau Plage, just a 20 minute drive down the coast, has regularly played host to World Pro surfing events and continues to be a surfer's paradise. Closer to home is the biggest freshwater lake in France, Hourtin Lac, which provides the perfect environment for water-sports enthusiasts of all levels (wind-surfing, kite-surfing,sailing) - equipment and lessons are available on site. The Cap 33 club in Montalivet also offers surfing and beach-buggying lessons for groups or individuals of all ages. Back on dry land, there is an impressive network of cycle paths around the area, comprehensively mapped out and well sign-posted, as well as walking, horse-riding, go-karting and a child-pleasing Adventure Forest for a view from the trees!

Food and Wine-lovers: As famous for its gastronomy as it is for its world-class wines, the Médoc must be one of the richest areas to be placed for food and wine lovers alike. Markets in surrounding towns and villages are great for finding local produce to try at home, and a good selection of restaurants near-by provide gourmet cuisine for very reasonable prices (a list of recommended eateries is available at the house). For some of the best food in the region, head for Montalivet market, where you can join the local residents enjoying fresh oysters, cheese and meats, all washed down with a glass or two of delicious médocain wine. To explore the vineyards further, drive to Lesparre and pick up the Route des Chateaux - a beautiful road winding through the vine-clad Gironde estuary past some of the most famous and impressive chateaux in the world. Enjoy a tour and some tasting at Chateau Margaux or simply stop en route at one of the many caves to try a delicious cross-section of locally produced wines.

lovely house, beautifully designed for relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this house for a week last summer. We were a multigenerational group and we got unexpectedly hot weather for part of the time. The house was absolutely lovely. The design was super for a holiday house and there was lots of room for relaxing and eating both inside and outside. The owner was exceptionally helpful during the booking process and the house was immaculately prepared and everything was exactly as described. We were lucky enough to meet the owners while we were there which was lovely. The nearby village was lovely and the library had internet - essential for my father! Nearby restaurants were very nice and within walking distance which was great. Lovely cycle to the beach and great day trips to the vineyards. All in all a great week.

A great house for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely house with excellent facilities in a great location. The house had everything we needed and more. The local beaches are great, in particular Hourtin, where we enjoyed both the beach and the lake. We'll be back!

Perfect house for extended family

  • 5 of 5

We loved the week we spent in this brilliant home. We were a family of five (kids 3, 5 and 7, who slept in the mezzanine room), with two sets of grandparents, and the space worked perfectly. The garden was great for games of cricket in the morning, the surrounding trees a haven for foraging for the kids; the terrace very sunny, and dined on for most meals, bedrooms on the small side but adequate and very comfortable; the large and beautifully airy living/dining room was a good space to retreat into from the searing afternoon temperatures if the pool didn't do the job. The kitchen was good and well equipped, the barbecue well used. The bakery in the village, an easy 5 min walk away, served us well every morning. The owners were very easy to communicate with and clearly, and quite understandably, love their (former) holiday home; the goodies they left us on arrival were much appreciated. We loved the nearby beaches, the stretch just north of Montalivet suited us best, parking was a cinch right next to the beach, and the swathes of sparsely occupied sand and waves kept us all very happy for hours. We visited the plage Piqueyrot on the northwest corner of lake Hourtin and had a good swim there, gentle, shallow waters and sand for kids, with pedaloes and paddleboards for hire, go deeper and you can have a decent swim. However the sea beaches with their body boarding/surfing/wave jumping opportunities and space won us over and gave us the most fun. Montalivet was a fun, buzzy place, with lots of decent restaurants and cafes. We would highly recommend this place, and could easily have stayed on an extra week. Had the weather been less scorching/ the beaches less alluring, we would probably have ventured further afield and done more of a variety of activities. Next time maybe!

Beautiful house for a great holiday

  • 5 of 5

This house was the perfect base for our lovely family holiday in Vendays-Montalivet.

The house has a really spacious living room and dining area that opens out onto a large patio making for a great space for children to play and adults to relax.

The swimming pool is a very decent size and we absolutely loved the BBQ area - taking the opportunity to have a BBQ every evening.

The nearby village has a bakery and decent corner shop and there are several vineyards, supermarkets within a short drive, including the amazing daily market of Montalivet.

Lac Hourtin was a particular hit for us. The warm and shallow water was brilliant for young kids to paddle and the beach alongside had soft fine sand to build great castles!

Lucy, the owner, is really lovely. There was a few supplies waiting for us on arrival, which was greatly appreciated and she gave us a call on to check everything was okay, which was a nice touch.

We would definitely recommend this house to anyone thinking of a visit.

Amazing house and lovely area = great holiday!

  • 5 of 5

This is such a lovely house to stay in - lots of sitting and lounging areas, great pool, lots of space inside and out for kids and adults to run around or chill out. Great info and welcome supplies provided by helpful owners. The local village/town (Vendays), which is a short walk away, has bakers, post office, pharmacy, lovely restaurants and bars, super corner shop which has amazing wines, which is great. And then you can cycle on cycle paths to the amazing beaches at Montalivet or drive to see the amazing vineyards nearby. Couldn't be better!!

An excellent location

  • 5 of 5

Our group comprised of 2 families with a total of 9 people. The house had more than enough space to accommodate us. It is very well equipped and has a lovely welcoming nature. The owners phone call to check we had everything we needed and that all was in order with the property was a really nice touch.

The age range of the children in our group was from 9 down to 2. The property is in a very safe location, gated and away from the main road, and a gated pool area separate from the rest of the garden meant that all the kids could play safely with no concern if we couldn't see them the whole time.

The access into Vendays - Montaliviet was a short walk (5 - 10 mins) and had all we needed including great Boulangeries, a small supermarket and takeaways.

This is a fantastic property that I would highly recommend for large families. We will definitely be returning.

Vendays-Montalivet is a pretty, typically French village, and provides for all basic needs, with three grocery shops, a pharmacy, a butcher, two bakeries, two bars, a pizzeria, a restaurant and a cave all within a five-minute walk of the house. Bigger supermarchés can be found in Lesparre, which is a 10 minute drive away from the house. 4 miles away lies the resort of Montalivet, a lively summer centre with a safe beach (lifeguards are on duty during the peak months), and one of the biggest daily markets in France. The market is made up of over 200 stalls selling products from the region and the rest of the world, and is particularly good for sampling the famous local oysters and wine as you watch the rest of the world go by. On the estuary-side of the Gironde peninsular, the Route des Chateaux is a must for wine lovers, as it passes through some of the world’s most famous vineyards, including Chateau Latour, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and Chateau Margaux.
