Sonja Dohse purchased this house in 1977
When we lived in San Francisco, we would come to Marin frequently. When ever we came to Mill Valley, we would always say, 'I would really like to live in Mill Valley'. We are so happy that we made the choice to move to Mill Valley...it is really a special place.
The house is surrounded by beautiful garden and full of light coming in from the outside. When you are here you feel like you are at a home with all of the comforts that a home offers. Every morning after I get up, I get my cup of coffee and walk around the house to enjoy the gardens.
Thank you so much Sonja and Ranier For extending a warm welcome to you perfect home, it was a delight, to awake each and every morning to the sweet smell of the magnificent roses. They were taller than me! Your home was just perfect...... everything one could expect from the two of you. I will miss you dearly and will see you again in the fall. I will never....... look any further for my home away from home. Our vacation was a perfect 10 and then some. Location could not have been better..... close to everything San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, Stinson Beach. The restaurants were wonderful WE WORRIED ABOUT THE WEATHER BUT IT WAS GREAT. What a charming home and most of all for me..... it was spotless clean! The gardens were spectacular !!!!! See you soon.... Joanne and Robert
Dear Joanne and Robert,
Thank you so much for the wonderful review. I was our pleasure to have you as guests! Thank you for leaving our home so nice and well taken care of. It has been so nice to develop a friendship with you. You are welcome back any time. Sonja and Rainer
When my father turned 70, we decided to go on a vacation, together with my sister and mother. It was a long flight from Sweden, but definitly worth it!
We had a marvelous week - real nice weather and a lot of interesting places to see.
We stayed at Sonjas and Rainers house and is was perfect. Good equipment, great rooms and the perfect placement - 15 minutes to the Golden Gate Bridge, 15 minutes to Muir Woods, 45 minutes to Wine Country.
But I have to say that the best thing about choosing Sonja and Rainer, was their friendliness! They helped us with tips and links to things we were interested in - hiking, Muir Woods, stores near by, Wine Country etc. Very fast and very friendly. Thank you for that!
My father told me on the way home that this was the best vacation he's ever had.
Our trip started with the thought to introduce the grandchildren to the San Francisco area. My daughter and I began a search to find a home to use as our base of operation rather than trying to stay in a hotel. I made an initial inquiry and Sonja responded promptly both by email and phone. In fact, the communication was excellent and continued through our stay. The location was perfect for our daily outings. Mill Valley is very close to both the Larkspur and Sausalito ferries that serve visiting San Francisco without having to drive into the city and find parking. We used the ferry several times including as a means to reach the wharf area for our scheduled trip to Alcatraz. Mill Valley is also around the corner from Muir Woods and exploring the Golden Gate Recreation Area. Route 1 is a great drive to Point Reyes National Seashore. We also devoted a day to a drive through the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. The house itself? The photos are accurate. While I’ve never actually seen an English cottage in person (only in movies/photos), that’s the feeling I had when we first walked through/around the property. You get the feeling it’s just not a rental but an actual home where you are visiting. There is a uniqueness to the build and the home is heavily surrounded by flowers, bird feeders/houses, fountains, tables, and chairs. My husband and I used the upstairs bedroom & bath, both daughter and grandson had their own bedrooms, and the granddaughter chose to sleep in the Garden Room. The three of them used the main floor bath. You’re able to get your car off the street by parking directly in front of the garage door. You have the Dipsea Café if you want to go out for breakfast and Joe’s Taco Lounge for dinner (and others). There are places to grab lunch sandwiches to take on your outings if need be. Or, the home’s kitchen and outside grill are available if that’s your choice. Finally, the ultimate question is. . . Would you stay there again? Yes.
We stayed at Sonya's place for a week. It was like a dream, lovely house with a flower garden. Fountains, barbecue, fresh roses in vases so many little touches in the house. Kitchen has everything you need for cooking. Each morning we had breakfast and left for an adventure. We love the location for traveling San francisco, couple minutes at the golden gate bridge. We visited golden gate park , De young Museum, Japanese garden. One day we hiked at the Muir woods, lovely trails very close to the house. We loved the Good earth just at the corner, great organic food. If we were tired to cook we just ate there. Sonja explained everything very detailed, we did the ferry to SF one day, was so much fun. We did Tennessee trail (little sunny for a noon walk but Ocean so much fun. One day we drove the Reyes point. There were many look out points to stop and watch the Pacific Ocean. Stinson beach is really cool, I wish we had time to go back. There was a little ice-cream shop just before the beach whole family is still crying for it. Monterey Aquarium was so nice but one day was not enough, it took around 2 hour to go there. Carmel bay is very nice too. I would definitely stay with Sonja and Reiner. Great place to explore SF.
Comfortable home in a great location for San Francisco and all activities around that area! Owners were very helpful and home had all the amenities our family needed. Would stay again if we're back in the area!
My sister and three cousins spent 11 days at Sonja and Rainer's lovely home. Mill Valley is a delightful area, convenient to San Francisco, Muir Woods, Sausalito, Wine Country, the Pacific seacoast, and endless other fascinating places to visit. We didn't want to drive into San Francisco, and we opted to take the ferry (very convenient); there were grocery and drug stores close by, as well as numerous local places to get a great meal. The home was clean, beautifully decorated, and beds were comfortable. The house is also surrounded by flower gardens, fountains and plenty of outdoor seating to allow enjoyment of the rose gardens and singing birds. Our hosts were very attentive, and provided us with a multitude of information about the area, transportation options, and must-see places. Thank you, Sonja and Rainer, for sharing your beautiful home and making ours a truly memorable vacation!
We had a lovely stay in this adorable house with gardens, water fountains, lots of nature.
There were 5 of us, at one point and it very easily accommodated all our needs. Also, the Owners go out of their
way to make sure that you feel at home and are comfortable...
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay !!!
We have a great central location for sightseeing in the Bay area. Muir Woods is 4 miles away. San Francisco is 10 minutes away, across the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge. You can walk to Sausalito. The Napa and Sonoma Wince Countries are 40 minutes to the North. Golden Gate National Recreation Area is just across the valley. Point Reyes National Seashore is a scenic drive up California Highway One. Sweet Waters, the home of the Original Jefferson Airplane is in Mill Valley. We have beautiful beaches near-by. There are hiking and biking trails all over Mill Valley/Marin.
