About Nina Pedersen

Nina and Jess are creative outdoor people. Jess is an architect...Nina is a papermaker....we both are hands on builders....we both teach skiing and are very involved parents. We have 2 kids, 3 dogs, 3 horses, 3 (or maybe) 4 cats and lots of projects. We love our property and are happy to share it with you.

Nina Pedersen purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Nina Pedersen chose Carbondale

Before we had kids, we looked for a forever home, someplace where we could enjoy all of our passions, that had a restfulness and soul. We saw an ad in the paper and everything else stopped.....we knew the property and knew we wanted it. When we bought it, there were 2 cabins from the early 1900's, very rustic and old. Now the main home has a modern addition surrounding the original old cabin and the second cabin recently burned in an unexplained fire...hence the new cabin. We are surrounded by neighboring hay pastures, fields of sagebrush and 360 degree mountain views. We are always working on our property, gardening and making improvements. Seems the DIY style of living is our destiny.

What makes this cabin unique

We call this rental home 'The Cabin' as it replaced an old cow barn that had been modified to be a residential cabin before we bought the property. Missouri Heights can be windy in the spring so Jess designed this building to have no eaves on the west face, in corten steel. As you walk around the cabin, it changes to slats of cedar with gaps meant to resemble the old chinked log design. As the cedar ages, it will go driftwood grey. The interior layout is very similar to the original cabin, with a lofted bedroom over the kitchen area and an open-to-below view of the living room. The design is spare, simple and highly functional. For a small 2 bedroom cabin, everyone who walks in says 'I could live here!'

Great house and location!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed three fabulous days in the Roaring Fork Valley--Nina and Jess' place was perfect for our family of four and it is always nice to bring the furry family members too--we all enjoyed the fresh air, views and extra time outside...the only thing that would have made it better was a couple more days!

Perfect, Relaxing Setting!

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect. It's an adorable property with great attention to many details that made our stay so enjoyable. It’s nicely decorated, and well furnished. It's on a farm setting next to the owners home but far enough away to have its own privacy. It's very quiet and relaxing and had great space for our two dogs (Hogan and Mala) who also greatly enjoyed the property, especially the Chuckit field in the front to play ball and run. The patio looks out at active farmland and snow covered peaks in the distance. Situated between Carbondale and Basalt which provide nice shopping and great dinner choices. Hiking is close by and fly fishing too it you so choose.

The home and property are great for dogs and one of the owners dogs, Cowboy, is a regular visitor if not always a guest. Nina and Jess are great hosts. They gave us great ideas and tips for exploring and hiking as well as restaurants to visit.

Our only wish would be to have a bathroom on the second floor since, in our opinion, it was the more desirable bedroom but we would welcome the opportunity to visit again.

A great place with great hosts made for a great stay. Thank you Nina and Jess.

Gorgeous location and home, beautifully set for a wondrous vacation.

  • 5 of 5

The best vacation rental we've ever stayed in! So much, in fact, that I was inspired to share a facebook post that read, "You know all of those VRBOs, HomeAways, and hotels that somehow look SO much better online than in person. Well this place is SO much better IRL than as pictured online."

Wonderful home, lovely area, great hosts

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were looking for a place where we could get some work done on projects in between bouts of exploring, and Nina and Jess's house was perfect. It's an adorable house, designed by Jess, with great attention to detail. It's architecturally interesting, nicely decorated, and well furnished. It's on their 5 acre spread which is in the middle of a larger ranch, so it's very private and quiet. It's got great views from the patio. It's close to Carbondale and Basalt for quick jaunts into town, and within striking distance of excellent hiking and exploring.

There are a few things about this place which make it especially noteworthy. It's not just dog friendly, it's dog oriented. Our dog, Milo, loved to roam the fenced area. And he really enjoyed the company of Nina and Jess's dogs, especially Cowboy. Milo and Cowboy became fast friends. And Nina and Jess are great hosts. They gave us great ideas for exploring, and they treated us like guests while still giving us our privacy.

We have never gone back to a vacation rental; we like to try new areas. But, in this case, we might just make an exception!

Owner's Response: Cowboy is still looking for Milo! He has been loitering at the Cabin, believing you guys are coming back. He is currently in therapy! Hope your Milo isn't suffering without Cowboy....if he is, I'm sure you will all be back!

Wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We cannot say anything negative about our 3 week stay at this property. It is beautifully located in the Missouri Heights area, very comfortable, has excellent facilities that are clean and well-maintained and the owner was very responsive to any requests for assistance or advice that we had. Our 2.5 year old daughter had a wonderful time roaming (supervised of course) about the property making friends with whatever animals or people she could find and is still talking happily about them all back here in Australia. My wife and I did a lot of road cycling in the area and we wonder if there is a better place in the world for it - not only are there the off-road Rio Grande trail, Glenwood Canyon, the roads out of Aspen and the Frying Pan Rd but we also found during the stay that there are many miles on enjoyable on-road cycling (including some good loops and climbs if you take in part of the Trail) on the Missouri Heights area itself, right out the front gate of the property. Carbondale is a great little town, shops at El Jebel are very good and a little closer for supplies. We'd recommend this area and this property to anyone and would definitely return if we are fortunate enough to find the time to come back to Colorado one day.

Just perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This was my first VRBO experience and I couldn't have asked for more. I am from a family of architects and I felt like I was in something my dad or brother might have designed. Every detail was perfect. Very open, lots of light, tasteful decor and finishings. Just plain comfortable with a great kitchen -- saved a bunch by not eating out. The weather was terrible, but no problems with the road. The wonderful concrete floors with radiant heat kept us comfortable and easy to clean up after out dogs. I can't really say enough about this place. A perfect getaway or place to stay if you have work or business in the area. Just gorgeous inside and out. Oh, did I forget to mention the view! or the occasional deer in the horse pasture..... The owners were wonderful and the dogs friendly. Sadly, this wonderful cottage may have set a pretty high bar for my future VRBO experiences.
