Casa Sirena ( The Mermaid's House)
Located just 10 steps from our property is the quiet and secluded beach of Esterillos Oeste. All of the wood work in our beach house is handcrafted from tropical hardwoods. To protect the forests we use only timber from fallen trees. All countertops and sinks were hand built from colored concrete. The house is two stories with all of the bedrooms upstairs. Casa Sirena has 3 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. Each of the bedrooms have a queen sized bed and the largest bedroom has an additional single bed. Two bedrooms upstairs share one large bathrooms, each with it's own entrance. There is abundant closet and drawer space. The linens and mattresses are of the highest quality. Each bedroom has air conditioning and a ceiling fan. With the windows open, you can be lulled to sleep by the sound of the sea.
There is a small office downstairs that has a single bed also with air conditioning.
Downstairs is the kitchen / dining room and living room area which is spacious and comfortable
The full kitchen is equipped with appliances and everything one would need to prepare meals. There The dining room table seats 12 comfortably. There are several secure drawers with locks in which valuables may be stored.
There is a flat screen cable TV, wireless internet and a DVD player.
With the downstairs doors open you have a perfect view of the coconut palms on the beach. The downstairs also has air conditioning and fans. There is a fully equipped laundry room just off of the kitchen.
Outside there is a small pool and a covered rancho with a sink and simple barbecue. This is a fun social area and very easy and convenient. Lounging in the pool sipping marguerites you can listen to the waves of the ocean and squawks of the scarlet macaws roosting and eating in the nearby trees. Butterflies flutter and iguanas sun on the trees. Sometimes when the mangos are ripe the white faced capuchin monkeys come to feast. Palm trees are everywhere giving shade and fresh coconuts for coco water (agua de pipa) and coconut meat whenever you wish.
A caretaker and his family live on the property. He is also a fisherman who brings in the catch of the day which you can buy and cook fresh for dinner. If you want a very typical Costa Rican experience you can go out fishing with him in his fishing boat.
Our house (Casa Sirena ) is perfect for a large family or a group of friends or just a quiet getaway for a couple or small family. It is also great for entertaining.
Esterillos beach is a very quiet and secluded local beach far from the over developed tourist spots. It can be perfect for surfing and boogie boarding and at other times great for swimming and playing in the water.
It is a long and beautiful beach . You can walk for miles in either direction. Close by on the beach there are many large tide pools perfect for children (and adults) to swim in , snorkel or just relax and watch the ocean and sunset. These were formed by lava overflow and you may also find some fossils and shells (and maybe some monkeys) beach combing. There is a majestic bronze mermaid statue right on the beach of Esterillos Oeste that has become an icon of the wonderful Esterillos Oeste.
Esterillos Oeste is only 1 1/2 -2 hours drive from the airport on the Central Pacific coast , Although Esterillos Oeste is a small, and typical village on a tranquil beach , it is just 20 minutes South of the beach town of Jaco which has casinos, restaurants of all types, shops, bars, jazz and lots of night-life. Forty minutes south of Esterillos is the town of Quepos and the world famous Manuel Antonio National Park, which is one of the finest rain forest parks in the country. Manuel Antonio is home to a large diversity of wildlife including two species of monkeys, one of which is very rare and use their bushy tails for balance. There is a sloth trail, turtles, and many birds. It is a great place for hiking and has beautiful white sand beaches. There are some incredible views from high up on the rocky cliffs a ways through the jungle.
Other activities in the area include zip lines, monkey tours and birdwatching in mangrove swamps, deep sea fishing and diving, surfing, surfing lessons, jungle or beach tours on horseback, and boogie boarding, snorkeling, and massage.
Casa Sirena is a perfect home base to enjoy the wide variety of activities in the area or just chilling beach side, sunset watching, and boogie boarding.
We like to rent to conscientious people who have a respect for nature and will treat our home with care.
My husband and I are American citizens who have collectively lived in Costa Rica for 70 years. We are very knowledgeable about all aspects of Costa Rica. We are available to help with side trips and offer any other information. We take pride in our properties and are responsive to our renters needs.
Emily Gassenheimer de Friedlander purchased this house in 2012
My husband is from NYC but has lived in Costa Rica for over 40 years. He has always loved to renovate houses so when we saw this house , he knew he had to go for it. My husband is also a master woodworker craftsman and used these skills in 'Casa Sirena' . All of the wood work is handcrafted. The proximity to San Jose is also a major plus as is it's location which is between Jaco Beach and Manuel Antonio. It is the best of both worlds!
Esterillos Oeste is a peaceful, uncrowded beach. Sometimes you have the entire beach to yourself.
The beach is just steps from our property . It is wonderful to be so close to the beach. You can be sun bathing on the beach and run into the house for a snack , another beer ,extra towel or a jump into the pool and be back at the beach in a couple of minutes.
The natural surroundings are lovely. It is a very unique spot.
“Wow Factor - Pictures Don't Do it Justice!”
Reviewed 1 week ago for a stay in February 2015
Our first thought was that the pictures don't do this beautiful place justice (and we thought it looked beautiful from the photos already)! The main floor is (mainly) a communal area with a wet bar and a huge cooking area, so it's perfect for groups who want to hang out and cook the fresh fish you might be able to get from the local fishermen. Of course, there's also a huge BBQ pit outside, so that's awesome, too. The bedrooms are beautiful, the view phenomenal, the house is bright and airy, and, most of the time, you feel quite secluded from the neighbors, since one side is a vacant lot. Even when the house to the south is occupied (weekends), the lush vegetation in the fabulous garden makes the place feel very private. We saw scarlet macaws in the almond trees (daily) and a pair of green parrots in the palm trees. Huge iguanas hang out in the tree next door.
The caretaker and his family were a highlight of the trip. He took members of our party out fishing and helped us with anything we needed. Super-friendly and helpful. Nearby is a phenomenal restaurant, Los Almendros, and we also really like the Surf Mi bar's Sunday BBQ. Not far to Manuel Antonio and several other parks. Close enough to shopping at the Auto Mercado, which, we found with the help of the owner who went over and above anything we could have expected in terms of small touches to welcome us and helping us find the amenities we needed. Beyond amazing hosts who make it really feel like you're an honored guest in a beautiful home. I would recommend this to anyone for a beach holiday - especially if it's a large party who likes to cook, eat, make cocktails and drink them. Perfect open kitchen for a fun time. Great hosts, home and town.
My family and friends stayed at this wonderful getaway for 8 nights. This beach house has everything you are looking for. From the perfect (hidden away from it all) location with the Pacific Ocean right in front of you with swaying Palms, to the fabulously furnished home. The kitchen has everything you need, the beds are super comfortable, there is plenty of space for a large group to not feel on top of one another, the outdoor grill area is wonderful for just hanging out and listening to the birds, the ocean and reading. The decor is quite refreshing, as it is done with wonderful original art on every wall, and a beautiful pottery mermaid as you round the circle staircase. All of the beautiful art and and wooden pieces (from the furniture to staircase to light-covers and more) are handmade originals from the owners. This house has heart and soul and you will feel it. It was also super clean!!! Our days were spent under the palm trees drinking coconut water out of freshcut coconuts from the caretaker, walking the beach picking up shells (enjoyed that immensely) We even found a hidden waterfall unexpectedly down past the Mermaid.. what an experience. This owner cares about her guests experience and it shows. We researched many, ,many houses and are so happy we chose Casa Sirena as it could not have been better. If you are looking for a beautiful place to relax and experience paradise, Look no further, this is the place you want to be!
We had a lovely time at this charming house. The caretaker Javier and his family are wonderful. Emily will help arrange tours and had many great suggestions for activities.
The beach is really great. Waves and current can be strong so surfing and bodysurfing are good which we enjoyed The sun is strong too so we took advantage of the shade in the trees and the beach umbrellas (provided by the house). She also has boogy boards but you need to bring your own swim fins. There are plenty of spots to chill and sunrise and sunset are magical. There is a lot of activity in the morning with dogs and roosters so you will wake early unless you run A/C This was fine because dawn was beautiful and great time to walk or run on the beach.
Local restaurants are good. People are really friendly. I'd recommend some Spanish ability but google translate works well. One of the best things here is the community and the more you can communicate with them the happier you will be.
The house has everything you need. It's also an easy drive to Manuel Antonio for a day trip. We really liked the plunge pool too
I would like to start by saying that the correspondence that Emily had with us as renters of her vacation home was outstanding. Before we even arrived, we felt very comfortable with what we should expect at the home and even within the country of Costa Rica. The information that she provided to us and the questions that she answered for us really made it a very easy transition into a country that we had never visited. We followed most of the suggestions that you made and were never disappointed.
We thoroughly enjoyed Casa Sirena. The house was well equipped with everything that we needed. It was so nice to have the basic necessities already there when we arrive (soap, toilet paper, trash bags). We spent most of our time under the pavilion in the yard and in the lovely pool. The pool was the perfect size and we spend many afternoons lounging around it. It was nice to have some shady trees around the pool for people to get out of the sun. Javier(the caretaker) did a wonderful job keeping the pool clean.
We were able to purchase some freshly caught fish from Javier several nights and we used the grill under the pavilion to cook them. They were awesome!
We did eat out several nights and the food was fabulous. I can’t remember the name of the restaurants, but they were ones that you had recommended. The men in our group stumbled onto a local dining area located near the surf rental and right across from the soccer field that was a fruit stand as well as a family selling food that was prepared out of their home. That quickly became our favorite place to grab a very reasonably price, authentic meal with the coolest beer in town. The men raved over the ice cold beer and the awesome food. Menu was written on a surf board.
We learned to recognize the sound of the Scarlet Macaws(sp?). A pair would fly over each afternoon and stop in the trees near your home to feed on the fruit in them. We loved to watch them. They are absolutely beautiful.
We all agree that this was one of the best trips that we have every been on. The country of Costa Rica is so beautiful and the people are very friendly. The beach house and its surroundings could not have been any better. Javier was a wonderful host. The weather was gorgeous. The food was outstanding.
Our family of 6 just got back from a wonderful trip to this beautiful home. There is so much to say but what struck us the most was how accommodating Emily was. She was an amazing host who bent over backwards to help us before, during and after our trip... There was a "welcome basket" with goodies in it for us, a couple meals in the frig to help us get started with meals (I really didnt want to cook when we first arrived) and the house was nice and clean. We had #2 trips to the emergency room with our kids and she was there at our side every step of the way to help us out with taxi service, communicating with the locals and figuring out where to go. Being in a foreign country with large language barrier was a bit unnerving but I was confident that Emily wouldn't lead us astray.
Another bonus was the location... its right on the beach, yes, there is a road but we maybe saw 2 or 3 cars a day so it wasn't a big deal. The ocean was amazing but very active so if you are traveling with little ones, pack a life jacket. For the big guys, the surfing is amazing and the water was perfect for that. Emily provided all the typical "beachy stuff" (sand toys, chairs, boards, umbrellas and towels) so that makes for a lighter load to pack.
The pool was a huge bonus... we used it more then we thought that we would. Because the ocean was so active and the sun gets pretty hot, we stayed in the pool more then the beach. It was right next to the house and there was shade there as well! It was a perfect place to take in the palm trees, the little lizard "guys" and the beautiful outdoors.
As far as the house... it was awesome! So much space for us all to spread out and was nicely taken care of. The table had ample room for lots of people and the livingspace was super comfy too. As far as the washer and dryer... we used it a couple times but realized that it wasn't getting things very clean and I am sure its due to the fact of all the sand that comes thru the machine... but hey, who needs a washing machine when you are vacation:)
Lastly, I want to talk about our highlight of the trip and it was meeting the beautiful family that cares for the home. They were so gracious, helpful, kind, respectful of our space and so much more. Guys, go fishing with him... its a true cultural experience. We shared a meal of red snapper (that was beautifully prepared by their family) with their family... what a gift! Javier is AMAZING and a forever friend of ours!
The home was such a welcoming, open place. You could tell Emily (the owner) went out of her way to provide everything guests could need. The decor of the home, with the pool and garden created a soothing, calming, and extraordinarily beautiful ambiance. The location in Esterillos Oeste was simply marvelous. A local, non-touristy location, that is wonderfully quiet during the week, and nicely populated on weekends with families. The house is close enough to the local store and center of the village, but far enough toward the end of the beach road that it's a true get-away. Plus, only an hour from 2 National Parks!. A mention must be made about the Javier (the Caretaker) and his family. They were a delight to get to know and they took great care to ensure the house, the pool, the garden and guests were well taken care of. They provided wonderful gestures such as providing periodic fried fish, or coconuts to drink, were always provided with a smile.
I've rented many vacation homes over the years, and Casa Serena is the best, by far, of any that I have rented. The combination of wonderful home, incredible location, and Caretaker support, all resulted in a wonderful month that I and my friends will remember fondly.
This was our first trip to Costa Rica and I'm sure we'll be back! We were looking for a place away from the noise and crowds of the more popular beaches and were very happy with this home in Esterillos Oeste. There was more than enough room for our 4 adults and 3 teens.
The quick "Pros": Emily was absolutely wonderful to work with. Her love of CR and desire to give her guests a vacation they will never forget is evident in all she does. She sent loads of info about the area and helped make our stay fabulous. Javier (the caretaker) and his family are wonderful people. They live on the backside of the property and are sweet, joyful people who are eager to make your stay comfortable. We don't speak Spanish - they don't speak English, but we were able to communicate well enough (with a little help from Google). Javier's adorable little chihuahua was also a highlight for our family :) I wanted to pack her in my carry-on! Great restaurant nearby (Los Almendros). We felt very safe and were happy to experience this authentic little town. The people were all friendly and courteous. The location is close enough to other areas that you can go on a monkey tour, waterfall adventure, etc. We rented a van for our group and it worked out fine. The pool is small, but very nice. The beach is amazing. You can walk for miles (literally). We were there during the "busy season" but we had the beach to ourselves most of the time. Wifi and AC were nice - we never turned on the TV, so can't comment on that.
"Cons" a few things to know before you visit Costa Rica. There are dogs everywhere. Unlike the US, they are not on leashes. We loved it, but I talked to a lady on the flight home who wasn't a dog-lover and it was a shock for her. Don't plan on sleeping late unless you bring earplugs. Between the dogs, iguanas, chickens and roosters, there are lots of nature noises to wake you up. Unless you're in a resort, this will probably be a factor. Our teens and adults loved the waves (Emily had boogie boards for our use) but the undertow would be to0 much for little kids.
This isn't Clearwater Beach....so don't try to compare it to a resort town in the US. It's a completely different experience that we LOVED. If you're looking for an authentic CR experience, this is the perfect place for you. Emily will help you plan a great get-away and Javier will take care of you when you arrive.
Bring your sunscreen, bathing suit, and sense of adventure and have a blast. Pura Vida!

Manuel Antonio is one of the places nearby that offers a variety of diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, whale watching tours among other specialty tours.
I also recommend a hike in Carara National Park. It is on the way to Esterillos Oeste and is an easy hike where you are apt to see all different kinds of wildlife. There are streams which you can bathe in and the hike is an easy one ; it is especially good for children and people who want a nice easy hike. Right before the park is the ' Crocodile Bridge'. This is a must stop; where it is possible to see sometimes as many as 20 crocodiles sunning by the estuary or floating with their snouts above the water. There are also many boating trips up estuaries where you may also see wildlife. These sights are about 30 minutes from our beach house 'Casa Sirena' (the mermaid's house). Also in this area is a zipline tree top adventure.
Other activities in the area include ziplines, monkey tours and birdwatching in mangrove swamps, deep sea fishing and diving, surfing , surfing lessons, jungle or beach tours on horseback, and boogie boarding, snorkeling, and massage.
Horseback riding on the beach or in forests is also fun and a different activity in all these areas.
Casa Sirena is a perfect home base to enjoy the wide variety of activities in the area or just chilling beach side sunset watching, and boogie boarding.
I have lived in Costa Rica for 26 years and am available to point you in the right direction , depending on your interests.
The medical services are in Jaco Beach ,20 minutes from Esterillos Oeste.
Some possible tours include : Sea Kayaking and Snorkeling , Rafting, Guided Park Tours,Estuary Boat Trips,Ocean Kayaking and Snorkeling,Horseback Riding and Catamaran Tours
