Come and spend your vacation in this quiet, peaceful setting on the Ware River. The estate boasts 290 ft of shoreline. This charming and historic 2 story cottage sits on 7 acres located on the Ware Neck Peninsula. The cottage has hand hewn post and beam construction dating to approximately the 1790s. There are fireplaces in both the living room and bedroom. There are ceiling fans in the bedroom and on the front porch. Just in front of the cottage is the restored icehouse built in the late 18th century and used to store blocks of ice brought from up north by steamboats down the Chesapeake Bay. The water front is a short stroll and has a pier with a floating dock. This is a perfect spot for watching beautiful sunsets while enjoying a glass of wine, fishing, crabbing or launching your canoe or kayak. The Cottage is 70 min from Richmond or Norfolk, 2 hours from DC, 45 min from Williamsburg, 30 min from Yorktown and 20 minutes to the Arts community of Matthews. It provides a great home base for exploring this beautiful and diverse region of Virginia.

Historic Gloucester Co. Cottage
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at this lovingly restored cottage. The grounds and cottage are truly beautiful. Peggy and John have thought of every detail so that our visit was perfect. The cottage and kitchen are well outfitted (and very clean), instructions and communication were detailed and timely, even the fishing gear on the dock is thoughtful - it includes many rods, a left-handed reel and bug spray! There is a lot to do and see in Gloucester County. The cottage has a basket full of guide brochures, several nice books on the area and Peggy offered a nice tip about a local country store just down the road.
Thank you for sharing your lovely home!
Ware Neck Gem
What a lovely, peaceful place. Peg and John are delightful hosts (they are around but the property is set aside so there is only interaction if you reach out). The cottage is perfect for 2 people (and a dog, in our case) with amenities to suit any kind of stay. And some of the fluffiest white towels found anywhere! The front porch was our favorite with birds chirping and rabbits hopping...we even had a house wren setting a nest join us for cocktails and breakfast.
A few things that might help others:
--There are pretty steep (and thankfully wide) stairs that go up to the bedroom and bathroom...we fondly called them billy goat steps
--The queen size bed is very comfortable and also pretty high off the ground...no rolling off the bed at night!
--The kitchen is small but great...remember to bring your ground coffee and any condiments you might want to use
--The area is very private but there is a rental cottage (annual) close by and neighbors just on the other side of the hedge...all were very friendly and welcoming
--You might want to bring shampoo, soap and such...there are some items around but, well, just in case!
--The books around the cottage are numerous...and you should definitely read up on some of the history of the property and the area...very interesting
--The dock is at the other end of the property next to Peg & John's (very lovely!) home...we were encouraged to use it (thank you so much!)
We love the area and hope to return for more peaceful exploring of the Mobjack Bay area...a wonderful stay in this small, delightful cottage.
We enjoyed having you all and hope to see you again.
We were absolutely delighted with our 3 night stay in this beautiful, immaculate cottage. The decor is welcoming and tasteful, we relaxed and basked in the comfort of this property. Walking the grounds, enjoying the dock and fishing (no catch, but fun anyway), awed by the nesting ospreys...we adored every bit of it! Although we did sightsee, Yorktown Battlefield and the like, we found ouselves mainly wanting to be at the cottage. Reading, enjoying coffee, just soaking in the laid back atmosphere. John and Peg made us feel comfortable and welcomed, true Southern hospitality. We were renewed and rested by our lovely visit!
Ware River Estate
We stayed in the grounds keeper’s cottage. It is such a unique cottage. It was the perfect place for us. The surroundings were wonderful, and it was quiet and peaceful. We felt rather “colonial”! The interior decor was perfect for the historic cottage. Such nice owners. The Montgomerys even turned the light on for us because they knew we would be late getting there! If I was coming back to this area, I would certainly see if this cottage was available! Joan and Tim Williams
It is a unique and fun experience
This unique cottage get away could not be better. Quiet, uncrowded, secure. With top of the line towels, sheets, etc. Because of the weather we could not take full advantage of the water activities available at the dock but it was a great way to start and end the day between trips to Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. The owners are the epitome of southern hospitality. You cannot go wrong renting the “middle cottage at Glebefield.
We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. You were great guests and we enjoyed hosting you.
This lovely cottage I stayed in was beyond my expectations. Everything you need for the perfect vacation or visiting family. I would love to return in the summer to view the garden area that is shown in the picture and enjoy the river.
We love exceeding expectations. This has been a long wet winter and finally hundreds of daffodils are popping up. It is lovely here in the spring. We hope to host you again.
We are in a lovely rural setting and yet close enough to Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg to enjoy all they have to offer including historical tours, amusement parks,
Farmers markets and fine dining.
