Retired resident engineer with the New York State Department of Transportation. Currently owner of my own company, Kernahan Engineers. I have two lovely daughters, two great son-in-laws, and three grandsons ages 7 years to six months!
Gerald Kernahan purchased this apartment in 1998
Private access to the premier lake of the finger lakes.
Private dock, great fishing in Keuka Lake, boating, water recreation, local wineries and breweries, golfing, large Mennonite population offering local crafts, close to cultural attractions
The house was very comfortable for 6 of us . The lake view was mesmerizing and our amazing owner gave us a wonderful tour of the Keuka Lake in his beautiful boat.
Jerry is a very nice and warm guy and the boat ride with him was like a cherry on the cake for our trip.
The beautiful watkins Glen Falls are close by as well making the overall trip quite memorable.
I want to start out by saying we had a great time and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
I had some questions for Gerald, the owner, and after a quick conversation with him on the phone I had decided this was where we were going to stay. I can't say enough good thing about Gerald. He was great to deal with on the phone. Upon arrival, which was late like we had discussed, he was waiting for us and was extremely welcoming. He showed us around, made us feel at home and then disappeared and let us enjoy the place. He was very simple to get a hold of if needed yet you never felt like he was hovering or watching over you. He even helped clean up some fish that were caught. Great guy!
The apartment was exactly what we needed. It's a walk out basement converted in to a really nice apartment. So it has it's own private entrance and patio. The patio has two propane grills, a picnic table and chairs and a fire pit. It has a deck over top of it which completely shelters you from the rain which was nice for enjoying it even during a rain storm. Inside is a very comfortable living room with cable tv, a full kitchen with pots and pans, utensils, etc. Everything you need. There is also a decent sized table and chairs inside where you can eat or do whatever at. The bathroom has an enormous shower and two shower heads. You can fit more people in the shower at one time than can sleep in the house. There are two bed rooms both with full size beds. Queens would be nice but the bedrooms were still nicely done and worked just fine for us. There is also a stocked laundry room with washer and drier.
If you walk down the yard you will find steps going down to the dock. It's a great place to fish, relax or have a camp fire at the camp style fire pit thats right off the dock. We even did a little swimming right off the dock.
Over the course of our weekend we spent a day exploring Keuka Lake. We drove around the entire lake with a stop in Hammondsport and at the state park. We then spent a day driving over to Watkins Glen, a short 30 minute drive, to visit the state park there and hike the gorge. Beautiful and a must see. We then drove all the way up the west side of Seneca Lake to Geneva and another state park with a cool water play area for kids... and apparently grown ups too as I think the four of us had more fun than the child. On our final day, we stopped in Ithaca to visit Trehmen and Buttermilk State Parks, only an hour away.
The apartment is located in Penn Yan, in Yates County. It is on the east side of Keuka Lake, approximately 5 miles south of Penn Yan and 16 miles north of Hammondsport. The area has a large Mennonite population and offers opportunities to purchase Mennonite crafts and produce. Yates County is home to nearly 40 wineries and an increasing number of craft breweries. Penn Yan's community events include the Keuka Arts Festival (June 14 & 15, 2014), Cruisin' Night (June 13, 2014), Sidewalk Sale the last Saturday in July, and StarShine (December 5, 2014). The Village of Dundee, approximately 8 miles south of the apartment, holds an annual Dundee Day the Saturday after July 4th, which includes miles of garage sales, and an annual Dundee Scottish Festival (September 6, 2014). Yates County was home to Native Americans before white settlers arrived in the 1700's and the area contains many historic sites. Keuka Lake and the surrounding Finger Lakes are a primary attraction and the area enjoys a well deserved reputation as a summer destination.
