! Bedroom/1 bath/ with Office Close to Hiking, ~SF~ & Wine Country
My family has been in the Bay Area for generations and survived the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. My grandmother owned a cottage on Mt. Tamalpais in the 1920's. My father helped put up some of the original hiking trail signs on the mountain. I came back to Mill Valley when I was working as a CNN correspondent in San Francisco. I've traveled all over the world and Mill Valley is one of the most wonderful spots on earth.
Rusty purchased this Cottage in 1995
Why Rusty chose Almonte
Mill Valley is so close to one of the world's great cities, has numerous great restaurants and charm, yet it's minutes to be on hiking trails with gorgeous views and no one around. Trips to the wine country in Napa and Sonoma Valleys are 40 minutes away. This is the cottage on the property of my main house but is separated by trees, stairs and a deck. Because there are two redwoods just feet from the windows and small deck, you feel like you are in a tree-house. But there are many windows and LOTS of light. It feels very private yet, so close to everything by walking or by car. There is also a small spa walking distance down the hill where you can get a massage. Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. Nearby is the Green Gulch Farm, a Buddhist retreat featuring classes and organic produce. Sausalito is only a couple miles away and you can walk or drive to this charming town right on San Francisco Bay which is very European in feel. There is also a great art festival there every September. There are several state and federal recreation areas for hikers and bikers within ten miles of Mill Valley. Not only is there Muir Woods, with it's gorgeous huge redwoods, but Mt. Tamalpais where some of the first mountain bikes were designed to ride on the fire trails. Stinson Beach and Muir Beach are both quaint beach towns just over the hill from Mill Valley.
What makes this Cottage unique
I fell in love with the property because it was SO close to where I worked in San Francisco, yet I felt like I was miles away from the rest of the world. The cottage is very private and quiet with soaring redwoods outside, yet lots of windows make it very light and cheery.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Rusty was personal and welcoming. The place is a sweet nest, snuggled between redwoods and centrally located between city and points north. Excellent! We hope to do it again
Relaxing and very safe
Just as described and super great people.
Cottage in the trees.
And that is the truth - every window has a view of the trees. We were fortunate enough to also see 2 does 's every evening come out. Went for fishing trip. Hubby caught his limit of halibut and we had a delicious dinner there (cooked on the gas stove). Overall, very nice, quiet place. We did meet Rusty and her husband also very accomodating without being intrusive. Had a great time.
A wonderful place!
Pretty, quiet, clean and close to both San Francisco and to the countryside!
Very, very quite, peaceful and safe.
Convenience, Quiet, Communication
Even though the traffic on the main roads in the Valley are very busy, this cottage sits back and high enough to be very quiet. It is located below the main house over a convenient garage space - you feel totally separate. We never even met, but Rusty was super responsive and communication was just great.
We were very lucky with sunny weather to enjoy awesome hiking. Wildflowers and coastline views were stunning on Point Reyes. Lush greenery and mighty redwoods are like an enchanted forest along the Steep Ravine/Dipsea Trails on Mount Tamalpais.
So nice to have a place to make our own meals, watch some Netflix, and collapse in a comfortable bed, after a full day of exploring this beautiful area!
Marin County just north of San Francisco, is filled with quaint towns and beautiful scenery. The giant redwoods of Muir Woods are a 'must see', both majestic and humbling, and right over the hill from the cottage. Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries, restaurants and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of live music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. The towns of Mill Valley and Sausalito are unique but quite different from each other. There are several state and national recreation areas nearby featuring world renowned hiking and mountain biking. Pt. Reyes National Seashore features oyster farms where you can sit outside and picnic and barbecue your own oysters. Close by San Francisco has everything one of the world's great cities can offer; museums, galleries, shopping, historic sites, world-renowned restaurants, parks, breathtaking views and much more! Also close, via a short beautiful drive, are Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino Valleys featuring world class wineries. For those who love the water, you can rent kayaks and paddle San Francisco Bay or rent a sail boat. Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge with it's incredible panorama of San Francisco is an incredible experience. A short walk down from the cottage and you are on a walking and bike path through a picturesque wetland which is part of San Francisco Bay. There is also a small spa within walking distance where you can take a hot tub and get a massage. There is also a horseback riding stable located in Tennessee Valley and less than 3 miles from the cottage.
