Almonte Cottage Rental Photos and Description

! Bedroom/1 bath/ with Office Close to Hiking, ~SF~ & Wine Country

This lovely, quiet, private, free-standing cottage has lots of light and feels like a tree house in the redwoods. Fully furnished and newly re-done, this one bedroom has a very comfy king size bed, wood floors, bathroom, kitchen (gas stove), living room, full-size washer/dryer and a small office with a desk and picture window. Perfect for a couple’s retreat, or as a temporary relocation/transition home. Great place for a writer seeking inspiration and solitude. Mill Valley is a charming village with shops, great restaurants, and live music. It's close to the quaint European style town of Sausalito, and only 15 minutes from San Francisco. In minutes you can be on beautiful hiking and mountain biking trails on Mt. Tamalpais, in Muir Woods, and in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It's 40 minutes to the Wine Country, one block from the biking/walking path from Mill Valley to Sausalito, one block from the bus stop to San Francisco and connections to SFO and Oakland airports; 10 minutes to the Golden Gate Bridge; 10 minutes to Sausalito (and a lovely ferry ride on the Bay to San Francisco) Dedicated parking is in a carport beneath the cottage.

About Rusty

My family has been in the Bay Area for generations and survived the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. My grandmother owned a cottage on Mt. Tamalpais in the 1920's. My father helped put up some of the original hiking trail signs on the mountain. I came back to Mill Valley when I was working as a CNN correspondent in San Francisco. I've traveled all over the world and Mill Valley is one of the most wonderful spots on earth.

Rusty purchased this cottage in 1995

Why Rusty chose California

Mill Valley is so close to one of the world's great cities, has numerous great restaurants and charm, yet it's minutes to be on hiking trails with gorgeous views and no one around. Trips to the wine country in Napa and Sonoma Valleys are 40 minutes away. This is the cottage on the property of my main house but is separated by trees, stairs and a deck. Because there are two redwoods just feet from the windows and small deck, you feel like you are in a tree-house. But there are many windows and LOTS of light. It feels very private yet, so close to everything by walking or by car.

There is also a small spa walking distance down the hill where you can get a massage.

Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. Nearby is the Green Gulch Farm, a Buddhist retreat featuring classes and organic produce.

Sausalito is only a couple miles away and you can walk or drive to this charming town right on San Francisco Bay which is very European in feel. There is also a great art festival there every September.

There are several state and federal recreation areas for hikers and bikers within ten miles of Mill Valley. Not only is there Muir Woods, with it's gorgeous huge redwoods, but Mt. Tamalpais where some of the first mountain bikes were designed to ride on the fire trails. Stinson Beach and Muir Beach are both quaint beach towns just over the hill from Mill Valley.

What makes this cottage unique

I fell in love with the property because it was SO close to where I worked in San Francisco, yet I felt like I was miles away from the rest of the world. The cottage is very private and quiet with soaring redwoods outside, yet lots of windows make it very light and cheery.

Clean, nice space, great amenities, very comfortable and it presents a treehouse like feel. A very luxurious treehouse that is.

Patti & I enjoyed our stay very much and are eager to return.

Quiet comfortable and very nicely located

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our extended weekend in amongst the redwood trees on the hillside. a quiet respite from a noisy busy City. After spending the day visiting old memories of my youth and attending the most lovely wedding I can ever imagine of my BFF, this was the perfect place to come back to relax and ruminate. Thank you Rusty you're having a lovely bottle of wine on the table waiting for us when we arrive. It was just what we needed. The whole weekend could not have been better.

Mill Valley Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time in Mill Valley and the cottage was terrific. It was just what we were looking for! It was full of color, bright, and airy and so clean also a terrific location. If you are into public transportation then there is a bus stop really close by that we took to go to San Francisco, which made it so easy. There are some terrific resturants in Mill Valley and Sausalito (which is so close) and we also went to Stinson beach for a swim. The water was cold but being from the east coast we had to give it a try.

The cottage has everything you need and Rusty is available if anything is needed. We locked ourselves out and Rusty was able to get us back in within a few minutes. There was also a bottle of wine waiting for us which was so nice. We would go back in a heart beat.

Great times on the west coast.

Why would anyone book a hotel when they could have this cottage?

  • 5 of 5

I had a trip planned in Northern California and needed a home base. This cottage could not have been more perfect! It's so close to San Francisco, yet in a calm quiet area. Napa was less than an hour away and I could be in SF in less than 10 min. The house has everything you need and a super comfy bed. I just loved it!!

Acogedor, Comodo, Completo

  • 5 of 5

Perfect cottage for Bay Area getaway

  • 5 of 5

Very spacious cozy and comfortable cottage. Had all the comforts we could desire including a fully equipped kitchen and washer dryer. Complimentary bottle of wine on arrival was a very nice touch. Rusty went above and beyond for us returning items we had left behind. Close to Muir Woods and easy access to San Francisco would love to stay again.

Marin County just north of San Francisco, is filled with quaint towns and beautiful scenery. The giant redwoods of Muir Woods are a 'must see', both majestic and humbling, and right over the hill from the cottage. Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries, restaurants and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of live music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. The towns of Mill Valley and Sausalito are unique but quite different from each other. There are several state and national recreation areas nearby featuring world renowned hiking and mountain biking. Pt. Reyes National Seashore features oyster farms where you can sit outside and picnic and barbecue your own oysters. Close by San Francisco has everything one of the world's great cities can offer; museums, galleries, shopping, historic sites, world-renowned restaurants, parks, breathtaking views and much more! Also close, via a short beautiful drive, are Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino Valleys featuring world class wineries. For those who love the water, you can rent kayaks and paddle San Francisco Bay or rent a sail boat. Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge with it's incredible panorama of San Francisco is an incredible experience. A short walk down from the cottage and you are on a walking and bike path through a picturesque wetland which is part of San Francisco Bay. There is also a small spa within walking distance where you can take a hot tub and get a massage. There is also a horseback riding stable located in Tennessee Valley and less than 3 miles from the cottage.
