Split level lodge in forest community with 2 apartments. Apartments sleeps 8.

We are located inside the gates of Yosemite National Park and are minutes by car to Yosemite's three most famous areas, Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Redwoods.

Accommodations: Falcon's Nest Upstairs

The Falcon's Nest is located in Yosemite West, a quiet neighborhood of private homes, located inside the gates of Yosemite. You don't realize the size and beauty of the Falcon's Nest from the street as you are viewing the carport and driveway. It is one of the few rentals in this area to give you covered parking and a level entry free of stair climbing. You step inside to rooms of light and color, filled with original paintings and works by famous photographers and wonderful views from the wall of windows in the great room.

You don't realize the size and beauty of the home until you step inside and see original paintings and works by famous photographers and the wonderful views from the wall of windows in the great room. The fully equipped kitchen is a joy to work in with its colorful granite countertops, lots of pots and dishes and basic food supplies such as herbs, oil, flour, sugar. There is a barbecue on the deck which has a sunset view and overlooks an animal trail. You may see deer, coyotes or even a bear on the hill below you while enjoying a sunset cocktail.

This split level home has two apartments. Each apartment can accommodate up to 8 guests. One bedroom is wheelchair accessible and has a queen and a twin bed. A second bedroom has a king bed that can be converted to twins and the third bedroom has a queen bed. All linens are provided. There are satellite TVs and DVDs in the great room and all bedrooms. We have wireless, of course! This is a very quiet area with no street lights or traffic but lots of stars.

This is an ideal home for those who are seeking comfortable relaxed accommodations for family, friends, coworkers or groups. Enjoy quick access to Yosemite National Park's amazing attractions without waiting in long lines to get into the nation's most famous national park. In less than 30 minutes, you can be watching the water cascade down Yosemite Falls, hiking up Half Dome, attending the Valley Chapel, rafting or kayaking on the Merced River, picnicking on Sentinel Dome or watching the sunset from Glacier Point. There is golfing on the 9 hole golf course at Wawona, only 11 miles away. In winter, let it snow! The roads are plowed regularly and often, and downhill or cross-country skiing at Badger Pass is very close by.

Enjoy our outdoor decks as you watch our local wildlife: bears, deer, coyotes, a variety of birds and more. Ski in the Winter at Badger Pass, only six miles away.

About David

David Maynard is the onsite manager and owner of the Yosemite Peregrine just next door. David greets all our guests with warmth and a wealth of information. With many vacation rentals you get a key at check-in and then you're on your own. At the Falcon's Nest you receive complete personal attention from David who lives next door.

The Falcon's Nest is owned by Done and Kay Pitts. Don Pitts, a retired magistrate judge, held court in Yosemite for over 18 years. His wife, Kay, is an artist specializing in paintings of Yosemite.

They built the Falcon's Nest in 1998 next to their home, the Yosemite Peregrine. Kay designed the home and it is filled with original art and photography from some of the best known artists of the area.

Kay and Don have hiked and skied every part of Yosemite over many decades and have now retired to the nearby town of Fresno CA.

David purchased this lodge in 1998

Why David chose Yosemite Area

Yosemite West is a small subdivision of private homes located at 6,000 feet elevation. It is only accessible by entering Yosemite Park. There is no commercial development here and consequently no traffic or crowds. The home is close to Yosemite's 3 major attractions: Yosemite Valley is 10 miles north, Glacier Point is 16 miles east and the Wawona golf course and the Mariposa Grove of giant redwoods are south. Winters bring lots of snow and the home is only 6 miles from Badger Pass ski resort where guests enjoy Nordic and Alpine skiing as well as snowboarding and snowshoeing.

What makes this lodge unique

The serene location allows guests to enjoy the abundant wildlife. Guests often see coyotes, deer and bears in the garden area drinking from our pond. Many varieties of birds are here and at night the stars are amazing. There are no street lights or traffic to spoil the serenity. Hiking and Nordic ski trails are just outside the door. Those who enjoy art will be amazed at the variety and quality of photography, prints and original paintings which adorn every room.

The Complete Package

  • 5 of 5

Falcon's Nest worked out perfectly for our group, which consisted of five people in three upstairs rooms. The location was an easy drive to all major attractions of Yosemite Valley and Glacier's Point trail. The accommodations were as advertised - spacious bedrooms with their own bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a large comfortable common area. We cooked every evening and the manager (David) was terrific. He stopped by each night to check on things and follow up on our requests (empty trash, drop off paper towels, etc.). We noticed a few area that were not as clean as we might have liked, such as the upper windows and (mouse droppings?) the outside bar-b-que deck. I suspect this is normal in the woods :) We were delighted with all aspects of our vacation and it definitely helped that we chose to stay in a property that David manages.

Owner's Response: Hello Linda, Thank you so much for your detailed and thoughtful review. I am happy you appreciate our location within the park. Many folks like to stay in the valley which is a very different experience. The valley is wonderful with it’s many attractions, but the accommodations for hotels and camping are very popular and tend to be very crowded as well as having all the issues that one would expect from so many people in one place. I believe our location is one of our strongest benefits. We are inside the national park gates. About 17 miles inside the park from the South gate on highway 41. Compared to staying outside the Park and can mean avoiding waiting up to an hour to get in the park each day. Our very central location: 20 minutes north to Yosemite Valley, 20 minutes east to Glacier Point which overlooks the Valley and 20 minutes to the Wawona area and 35 minutes to the Giant Sequoias is the best anyone will find for a lodge stay in the park. I appreciate your comments regarding the upper windows, and feed back like yours helps us to do a better job. As far as mouse droppings go, yes you are right it is normal in the woods. We put out traps during mouse season and remove any we find inside, but it is impossible to control them outdoors. To respect the privacy of our guests we clean the decks and BBQ before each check in but do not enter the lodge after our guests are settled in unless we are invited or there is an emergency. So we do not see the guest’s private decks until they are gone. If anyone experiences similar issues please let us know, and we will be happy come in remove droppings during your stay, whether they are bird, mouse or bear ;-) Also it gets pretty bad during pollen season and if you like we can also enter to clean up the pollen of the decks as well. Thanks again for a great review. Cheers, David

Wonderful stay in West Yosemite

The Falcon's nest lodge was a wonderful place and conveniently located near Yosemite Valley. We were able to spend the day in Yosemite, after which we made the short drive to Falcon's Nest and cooked dinner for 6. David was an excellent host too!

Really beautiful, comfortable, felt like home. Fantastic location - picturesque, quiet, unbelievable stars, with short drive times to central and southern Yosemite.

David Maynard is friendly and helpful.

For a group or family of six or more, this is great value for a truly memorable experience.

We'll be back next time.

Owner's Response: Hello Randall, I am happy you had a great experience while staying at the Falcon’s Nest Lodge. Being able to explore Yosemite while avoiding the valley crowds after a long day has many benefits. Personally I think one of the best are the stars at night. Now that fall is here the sun has traveled back south so that the sunset views from the Falcon’s Nest outdoor decks are just incredible. Of course for those of you who are here to enjoy Yosemite National Park, there is are a whole lot more then stars and sunsets to see. Being centrally located to the main park attractions and accessible by short drives from the lodge make our community a unique and hidden jewel in the Sierra’s. Our lodge is suited to families and groups, and when compared to the cost of staying in the valley is a great deal. Thank you Randall for your time in writing your review. And thank you for being our guest. Cheers, David

Great stay and host

  • 5 of 5

The property was just as described and very well maintained. David is a great host and provided great tips on things to see and do before and during our stay. We took the whole upstairs floor (3 bedrooms) and his collection of board games and puzzles was a hit with the kids.

Owner's Response: Hello Sanket, Thank you so much for your wonderful review. It was a pleasure to meet you and share information on the park. I enjoy meeting our guests and understanding what they are wanting to see and do. Every group that stays with us has different goals, back country experience, and health, or age considerations. One thing is for sure, no matter what you want to do there is something for everyone here in Yosemite. Whether spending a quiet afternoon sitting on a river bank with fishing pole in hand, sitting in a meadow watching the clouds drift or making that epic hike on your bucket list, we have it. I enjoy sharing what I have learned in 30 years exploring Yosemite. Thank you Sanket, we hope to see you again. Cheers, David

Yosemite National Park is so amazing and our vacation home is right in the center of the 3 most popular areas: You'll gasp at the height and power of the waterfalls in Yosemite Valley, gaze at the alpenglow on Half Dome at sunset at Glacier Point and be amazed at the height of the giant redwood trees in Mariposa Grove. After a day of touring you can return to the solitude of the Yosemite West area where you leave tourist traffic behind and enjoy a quiet dinner on the deck as the sun goes down and millions of stars come out to greet you.
