About David

David Maynard is the onsite manager and owner of the Yosemite Peregrine just next door. David greets all our guests with warmth and a wealth of information. With many vacation rentals you get a key at check-in and then you're on your own. At the Falcon's Nest you receive complete personal attention from David who lives next door.

The Falcon's Nest is owned by Done and Kay Pitts. Don Pitts, a retired magistrate judge, held court in Yosemite for over 18 years. His wife, Kay, is an artist specializing in paintings of Yosemite.

They built the Falcon's Nest in 1998 next to their home, the Yosemite Peregrine. Kay designed the home and it is filled with original art and photography from some of the best known artists of the area.

Kay and Don have hiked and skied every part of Yosemite over many decades and have now retired to the nearby town of Fresno CA.

David purchased this lodge in 1998

Why David chose Yosemite Area

Yosemite West is a small subdivision of private homes located at 6,000 feet elevation. It is only accessible by entering Yosemite Park. There is no commercial development here and consequently no traffic or crowds. The home is close to Yosemite's 3 major attractions: Yosemite Valley is 10 miles north, Glacier Point is 16 miles east and the Wawona golf course and the Mariposa Grove of giant redwoods are south. Winters bring lots of snow and the home is only 6 miles from Badger Pass ski resort where guests enjoy Nordic and Alpine skiing as well as snowboarding and snowshoeing.

What makes this lodge unique

The serene location allows guests to enjoy the abundant wildlife. Guests often see coyotes, deer and bears in the garden area drinking from our pond. Many varieties of birds are here and at night the stars are amazing. There are no street lights or traffic to spoil the serenity. Hiking and Nordic ski trails are just outside the door. Those who enjoy art will be amazed at the variety and quality of photography, prints and original paintings which adorn every room.

The place was clean and the view was gorgeous!!

Dave was very accommodating and NICE

1. Internet access did not work and we run a business and had to do some work and this was a real hassle for us.

2. 3 televisions and none of them worked.

3. Carbon Monoxide units warning alarm went off when dryer was in use. Had to stop any clothes drying...bummer!!

Unit read 180ppm very high.

4. Water took a long time to heat up when using any of the faucets or showers-lot of waste.

5. The kitchen faucet whistled like a tea pot when running the hot water - very annoying!

Dave explained that new owners had taken over and some of the kinks had to be taken care of.

for charging us premium price (Christmas - holiday pricing) and not receiving premium accommodations.

Owner's Response: Hello Mary, I understand your frustration with the events during your stay. I do apologize for the TVs not working. This was a result of the change of ownership, and very unexpected. I know your frustration was added to by the winter storm that caused that dish and network to go down. It was fortunate that I was able to give you another network to use, I do apologize for the time you went without. I need to point out to our future guests our internet does go out at times of severe weather. We are in the back country inside the park surrounded by wilderness and reliant on satellite dishes for TV and Internet. The lodge also has hot water on demand, after a period of non use it does take a few minutes to warm. During occupancy and with constant use it gets hot pretty quickly. The kitchen faucet has not been reported to me but I will look into it right away. The most serious issue is the CO2 alarm. We provide them for our guests safety and we take that safety very seriously. I had a choice to make, either vacate the apartment or wait to see if the alarm would go off again in short order as it had not gone off before, and no gas smell was present. We do not use natural gas, but propane which has a smell injected into it for saftey. Being a holiday and knowing the difficulty in finding another accommodation, I opted to see if the alarm would go off again. Any real leak would set it off again very quickly. If it had I would have had you leave and refunded your money. As it was you did not have to suffer an evacuation. We did not rent the lodge again until a professional tested for gas leaks. I have also purchased a combustible gas detector. Now I can do a check for leaks immediately to rule out false alarms. The purchase of this device is worth the piece of mind of our guests. We cannot always see what issues may arise, and unfortunately do to our remote location we do not always have the immediate resources to correct some issues. We do learn through experience, and our highest priority is to do what is necessary so our guests can have the best experience possible. I would like to extend more then just a written apology. The owner will refund you the difference between winter rate, and the holiday rate. Please do not repost a hire ranking review, your experience is what it was, nothing can change that. Our goal has been and still is to provide a five star experience and I apologize you did not have that. Best wishes, David

Amazing, comfortable and spacious lodging.

  • 4 of 5

Everything was very clean and neat when we arrived. The manager David had already emailed me several times with info about the place and the weather. It was a scenic drive down into Yosemite Valley from the apartment and even had different weather from lower down (place is at 6000 ft.)The heating worked really well and since we had 2 babies with us and it was November 20-23, we were happy and warm. Kitchen was very well equipped. The beds were a little on the soft side but the bedding was warm and nice. Overall a 9+.

Perfect place to stay in Yosemite

  • 4 of 5

The Falcons Nest is the ideal location when visiting Yosemite. It's convenience cannot be underestimated. . Because it is inside the park we were saved the frustrations of heavy traffic getting to the Valley. The apartment was ideal for our extended family having an ensuite in each of the three bedrooms and a living room and balcony overlooking the trees. We used the barbecue each night. The apartment is comfortable with a good kitchen and excellent laundry facilities. It was a welcome place to come back to after a day in the park. Highly recommended.

Lovely lodge

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 15 month old son, and I stayed here for 3 nights in August 2016. Lodge was exactly as described with all amenities including a fully equipped kitchen. We enjoyed sitting in the balcony during the evening and watching the sun set behind the trees.

WiFi was available but slow and there was no mobile phone reception, which made our stay all the more enjoyable.

Yosemite National Park is so amazing and our vacation home is right in the center of the 3 most popular areas: You'll gasp at the height and power of the waterfalls in Yosemite Valley, gaze at the alpenglow on Half Dome at sunset at Glacier Point and be amazed at the height of the giant redwood trees in Mariposa Grove. After a day of touring you can return to the solitude of the Yosemite West area where you leave tourist traffic behind and enjoy a quiet dinner on the deck as the sun goes down and millions of stars come out to greet you.

You enter the Falcon's Nest through a gallery of photographs of Yosemite. All rooms have original paintings and other artistic touches to delight your senses. Watch a variety of birds from the deck. Our property is visited by deer, bears and coyotes. You can lie in the hammock and enjoy a rare time of silence in your busy life. (You may be disturbed by the chatter of squirrels or the sound of a breeze passing through the trees.) And at night enjoy the milky way, constellations and shooting stars.
