About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths With Pool And Air-conditioning In Great Centro Location

Casa Wayib in Classical Mayan means a place of sleep or of sanctuary. We hope that our house will be as much of a sanctuary and an inspiration for you as it is for us in this wonderful city.

Featured in the June 2014 edition of Architectural Digest Mexico, Casa Wayib is located in the heart of the historic Centro, midway between the parks of Santa Lucia and Mejorada. It's a bustling, vibrant area and within easy stroll of many of Merida's greatest attractions.

The house was originally built in about 1930, with an extensive renovation by architect Victor Cruz and Estilo Arquitectura completed in March 2014. The renovation has created an evocative blend of Yucatecan traditional and international modern with a warm, romantic vibe.

Inspired by Mexican colonial architecture but also the Riads of Morocco, the house is centered around a courtyard and the boundaries between indoor and outdoor space are blurred. Large steel and glass doors open the main living space to the central courtyard and both bedrooms also open to the outdoors. You can roll straight out of bed and into the pool or shower in the guest bathroom with the big doors open and the sunlight streaming in.

The house features soaring 20 foot beamed ceilings and traditional cement 'pasta' tile floors - some floors are original and some custom made for the recent renovation.

The kitchen features a traditional campana, the bell-shaped vent above the stove. Counters are of a Mexican marble sourced from Puebla and the cabinets were custom made by local craftsmen. The kitchen features modern stainless appliances including a dishwasher, gas oven and cooktop. It's fully stocked with cookware, down to a Le Creuset dutch oven.

Finishes in the house are a blend of contemporary and vintage. Furniture ranges from locally sourced antiques to lighting by Moooi and LA-based Cisco. The sala (living room) is anchored by a giant Swedish fiber wall hanging from the 70s. Artwork ranges from 1950s mid-century works to contemporary pieces by local artist Israel Koh.

Both large bedrooms have very comfortable Sealy Posturepedic beds and soft luxury bed linens. Each bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom stocked with toiletries and fluffy white towels. There is ample closet space in both bedrooms and each features super efficient and quiet individual air-conditioning units.

Outside in the courtyard the pool has a wonderful waterfall. The pool isn't heated but in the tropical, humid Merida climate it warms naturally and is the perfect temperature after a hot day of exploring. A new roof terrace completed in April 2016 offers a shaded pergola, outdoor kitchen with Weber grill and views of the main cathedral.

About Geoff Clark

Hi, we are Geoff and Kyle and we're excited that you are considering our house for your trip to Merida. We live in Los Angeles and have finally realized our dream of having a second home in Mexico. Geoff is a real estate agent and originally from Auckland, New Zealand. Kyle is an LA native and a transportation engineer with the City of LA.

We live in an area of LA called View Park with our 3 dogs and 5 chickens who give us fresh eggs every day. We are avid gardeners and grow everything from heirloom tomatoes to eggplants, zucchini and green beans.

We've found a wonderful property manager in Merida in Andrea Traconis and know that she will take care of you down there the way we would. We LOVE our house and want you to experience as much joy and fun in staying there as we do.

Geoff Clark purchased this house in 2008

Why Geoff Clark chose Merida

We have been traveling through Mexico for years and have visited almost every corner of the country. When we decided to take the plunge and buy a second home here, Merida kept calling our names.

We love the Mexican people for their warmth and spirit, but the Yucatecos are even warmer and sweeter yet. We're constantly amazed by how welcoming the locals are - and how patient with our faltering Spanish!

We also love the languid tropical climate, the elegantly dilapidated colonial buildings, the layers of history and the culture that makes Merida so rich. Musicians play live music in one of Merida's parks every night of the week and there are symphonies, museums, Mayan ruins galore, gorgeous old haciendas out in the country and amazing food.

We love to drive out of town and swim in a cenote or have lunch at one of the haciendas. Or go to Celestun to see the flamingos or drive across to Tulum for a weekend on the best Caribbean beach you can imagine.

What makes this house unique

We house hunted in Merida in late 2007 and must have looked at 50 houses before we found Casa Wayib. When we saw that ornate exterior we knew that here was something special.

The house was owned by an old man whose father had built in in about 1930. It was very dilapidated, with pieces of ceiling missing, wires hanging everywhere and very little working plumbing. But the soaring 20 foot ceilings and the original old cement 'pasta' floors captivated us and we could see the great potential.

A friend recommended local architect Victor Cruz to us and it has been a wonderful collaboration with him to realize the house's full potential.

Having been to Merida before, I was searching for the perfect place to stay in a city of beautifully restored homes....mission accomplished. It is the ideal sanctuary at the end of a day of exploring Merida, a city that relaxes and energizes like no other. If I'm lucky enough for it to be available, this is where I will stay on my next trip. Peaceful and quiet, beautifully furnished, everything you need in the kitchen, and the soul of the home maintained after an obviously-thoughtful renovation. Thank you the Geoff and Kyle for making it available! (And a special thank you to Jesus from Andrea's property management company for being there at midnight to let me in!)

Perfect oasis in Merida!

  • 5 of 5

I chose Casa Wayib out of a few other properties for a 5 day stay with my husband, and 18 year old daughter, and could not have been happier with my choice. First off, I must say thank you to Geoff and kyle for sharing their beautiful casa with us.

Arrival was smooth and fast, as Andy, the property manager was already waiting for us when we arrived in Merida. She was pleasant and knowledgeable, and stayed just long enough to properly welcome us in. Upon entering, the words" wow!" escaped all of our mouths as we stood in the entry. The photos listed just did not do the place justice, from the soaring ceilings, tile floors, and oasis- like pool/courtyard. My favorite features were the soothing sound of the water fountain while swinging in the hammock poolside, sipping a margarita. The casa has the perfect mix of traditional architecture, and furnishings, but with every amenity imaginable. The kitchen is modern, and completely equipped right down to the martini shaker and lime squeezer. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have slept in, right down to the soft linens, and I have travelled throughout Mexico for 15 years. The cleanliness throughout was impeccable.

The location is very convenient, within walking distance to the plaza, cathedral and restaurants. Our stay was perfect and I did not want to leave Casa Wayib, as it truly felt like home. If you are planning to stay in Merida, Choose Casa Wayib, you will glad you did. Although, now I'm afraid the secret is out!

Just Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Me and my family stayed in this beautiful house for a hole week, 2 weeks ago, and we just loved it!. It has the perfect match between a traditional "hacienda" and all of the modern amenities and facilities that a well-equipped house can have.

The listing description was accurate regarding the location, everything is really close, I went jogging to the beautiful paseo Montejo (which is located just a few blocks away) every morning. And every night we went out to have dinner to very nice Restaurants located close to the house.

The property was clean and well-maintained and everything looked just as in the pictures of the web page.

I totally recommend the property, I would love to live in a house so beautiful as this!

Gorgeous Home. Wonderful Owner!

  • 5 of 5

The pictures are spot on, and the house is actually more stunning in person. Soaring ceilings, huge and comfortable bed, perfect layout for entertaining, two hammocks available to relax in next to the pool. In fact, I asked my fiancé to marry me on our last evening there as she relaxed in the hammock. I certainly recommend staying at Casa Wayib. Geoff, the owner, even had fresh flowers upon our arrival for my fiancé. The only downside is the other properties surrounding the home are mostly still in need of rehab, but that's how Mexico is, so just expect that.

Wonderful House!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay at Casa Wayib. The house is incredibly beautiful in its design and layout. It is highlighted by the open kitchen and indoor/outdoor living spaces. The pool is a nice feature and is a great way to cool off and relax. The location is perfect for sightseeing in the historical downtown area. Felt safe walking throughout the day and night to all the great restaurants / bars / parks. I was also able to get early morning jogs on the Paseo de Montejo. A great way to experience Merida. Can't wait to come back.

Car: not necessary

Casa Wayib is located in the heart of Merida Centro, midway between the parks of Santa Lucia and Mejorada. It's a bustling, vibrant area and within easy stroll of many of Merida's greatest attractions.

We'll start with nearby restaurants because food is dear to our hearts! We love to walk a few minutes up Calle 55 to Parque Santa Lucia and eat at our favorite restaurant Apoala. The female chef there is from Oaxaca and the food is sophisticated Mexican fusion. The zucchini flowers stuffed with Oaxacan string cheese are a must.

The park also holds another good restaurant La Tratto and on Thursday nights there's a wonderful outdoor concert in the park with Yucatecan music and dancing.

If you are looking for authentic Yucatecan food then the now famous Chaya Maya is on our street right opposite Parque Santa Lucia.

Also just a few minutes from the house is Fundacion Mezcaleria, a fun mezcal bar that's very popular with Merida's young and hip set right now. They also serve great tacos and quesadillas. Try their tamarind mezcal cocktail, it's sublime. It's on Calle 56 between 53 and 55.

A little further along C.56 at the corner of C.49 is a tiny Italian restaurant called Oliva which is absolutely delicious. They are always packed so check in and while you wait for your table go have a mezcal at Fundacion.

Casa Wayib is just a few blocks from the Plaza and main cathedral. And likewise an easy walk to Paseo Montejo. On Sunday mornings they block off Montejo to traffic and you can rent bikes and tool up and down the grand old boulevard. Make sure that you stop at Helados Colon on Montejo for some of the best ice cream you will ever eat in Mexico.

Calle 60 is also closed to traffic on Sundays and there are many locals selling handcrafts and lots of good food stands in the Plaza. Santa Lucia has a little flea market that we have found some treasures at in the past.

Also a must visit is the mercado central, about a half hour walk. It's a riot of sights and smells and if you're a cook it's a treasure trove. We buy meat and fish there and it's always been fresh and wonderful. There's a big Le Creuset dutch oven in the kitchen: buy some pork, achiote paste and banana leaves at the mercado and you can make your own cochinita pibil! There's a Rick Bayliss cookbook in the pantry with the recipe - if you make it let me know how it turns out!
