About the property

Modern house, well maintained and clean and close to the beach

The accommodation is in a modern house and we take pride in keeping it clean and well maintained and fully equipped for your holiday. There is a living room which includes the kitchen area and French windows onto the garden. Also downstairs there is a cloakroom with toilet and washbasin. On the first floor there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. One bedroom has a double bed and the other has two single beds. There is a cot available, which is kept dismantled under the double bed. For the security of our younger visitors, there are stair gates installed at the top and bottom of the stairs that can be used if necessary. The bathroom has a shower, toilet and washbasin.

At the back of the house there is an 'abri' in which you will find the washing machine, parasol, beach umbrellas, barbeque tools and charcoal, among other things.

The garden has decking with a table and benches for al fresco meals, a barbeque and a bicycle rack.

The house is situated in a private pedestrianised 'residence'. There is an allocated parking space in a car park with a remote controlled barrier.

There is a swimming pool solely for the use of residents and visitors which is open from mid-June to mid-September. The code for this is in the house, where we also keep as much information as possible to help you enjoy your holiday This includes several maps of the area for your use.

There is also a boules pitch nearby.

About Judy Cooper

We are a couple in our 60s. Steve works in his retirement as a gardener and Judy as a psychotherapist. We live in Sussex near to Ashdown Forest in beautiful countryside. We are lucky to have a house in France which, by contrast, is by the sea.

This house is a special place for us and our family. Since we purchased it in 2004, we have had many great holidays in Brétignolles. We bought it with a legacy and consequently it is a link with those members of our family that are no longer with us.

We came originally with our two daughters when they were in their teens, later with their husbands and now with our grandchildren too. It is wonderful to be able to share the simple pleasures of a holiday by the sea with them.

Judy Cooper purchased this house in 2004

Why Judy Cooper chose Bretignolles-sur-Mer

The Vendée was a fairly unknown region to us when we were looking for the perfect holiday home by the sea. On our first visit we were delighted to discover the long sandy beaches bordered by shady pine forests. And to learn that this area of France has a micro climate which means that is the sunniest region in the country apart from the south coast. Sometimes it is warm enough to sit outside in the sun in November!

What makes this house unique

The house was brand new when we bought it because we wanted somewhere that would be easy to look after and keep clean. We had a lot of fun choosing furniture and accessories after receiving the keys.

We are enormously fortunate to have friendly and helpful neighbours who own their houses as second homes too.

An important factor for us when choosing the plot was that the garden faces south, so the garden and decking are in sun for much of the day. Later we were very happy to discover that the garden is almost always sheltered from any breeze.

Our goal was to have a house as welcoming as possible and to provide everything our visitors might need. We hope we have succeeded. But we always want to hear if there is anything we have missed and will provide it for future holidaymakers in our next visit.

We regard it as being very important to have good quality mattresses in order that our visitors can enjoy a good night's sleep after long days on the beach or sightseeing!

It is great to have a wide choice of places to eat not far from the house, from pleasant cafés and bars to Les Brisants, a Michelin starred restaurant. It's a huge treat to splash out on their degustation menu!

The house is very well situated, close to the beach, bars and restaurants and not far from the town centre. And, because it is in a pedestrianised 'residence', it is free of traffic. In the medium and low season it is very calm and quiet.

Wonderful holiday - thank you so much!

  • 5 of 5

We could not have enjoyed our stay in Bretignolle Sur Mer any more.

Steve and Judy's house is in a beautiful location, less than five minutes away from a stunning beach that goes on for miles. It was spotless and immaculately furnished providing everything you may need - even an outdoor barbecue! The delightful square has a number of wonderful restaurants, as well as an excellent ice cream shop that serves every flavour of ice cream you can imagine - the perfect treat after a long day on the beach! There is also a delightful local bar with very friendly and helpful locals.

The cycle path all the way along the coast really made our holiday complete after we hired a tandem at the local bike shop. Steve and Judy have even put a bicycle rack in the garden to store bikes overnight which made things very easy after returning from a long ride! Thank you both for all your help in organising a truly fantastic holiday - it really was the best vacance yet! We will be back again next year and are already looking forward to it...

  • 5 of 5

  • 4 of 5

  • 4 of 5

  • 5 of 5

One of the best things about the position of the house is that the beach is only 50 metres away. There is plenty of sand for sunbathing and much fun can be had at low tide finding crabs and little fish in the rock pools. In July and August there is a lifeguard on duty.

There is a boules pitch on the residence for a leisurely game of boules while you watch the sun go down over the sea.

It's only a short walk across the square in the morning to the local boulangerie/pâtisserie. There you can buy the best croissants and bread in Brétignolles for breakfast or buy a delicious fruit tart to have with lunch or dinner.

There is a swimming pool on the residence, available only for residents and people staying there, open from mid June to early September.

Bikes can be hired locally, 40 metres away, and stored in the bike racks in the garden. Cycling is a wonderful way to explore the locality, as there are excellent cycle paths nearby. They take you along the coast and through the shady pine forests. It's possible to travel for miles without having to go on the road.

Town centre: 1 Km

SuperU supermarket: 1 Km

Post Office: 1 Km

In the centre of town is Les Halles, a market where you can buy fresh fish, meat and vegetables. And the fromager there has an incomparable selection of fabulous cheese. Stop and enjoy a coffee while watching the world go buy. On Thursday and Sunday morning the outdoor market takes place here too. Not to be missed is the charcuterie stall which sells the best pâtés and rillettes in the region. Not to mention the spit roasted chicken and pork. To find it, simply follow the wonderful aroma! During the summer there is also a market in the square near the house.

Close to the house is a glacier which sells delectable ice cream. Perfect for cooling down after a day on the beach!

Also nearby is a shop which sells everything you might need for a day on the beach.

There are restaurants and bars not far away. We would recommend 'A Table' or 'Café de la Plage'. Café de la Plage provides a warm welcome and good food at reasonable prices. A Table is a little more expensive but with a nice atmosphere and excellent food; you must try their Mareuil wine!

Further away, 2 Km, there is a very good restaurant, Le Galet, which has a splendid view of the sea. You can spend a relaxing couple of hours on the terrace enjoying the delicious local 'fruits de mer'.

The local wine is little known but of first class quality and it is possible to buy it at local vineyards, from the winemakers themselves. Look for a member of Fiefs Vendeens. For example, visit the domaine Rose St Martin at Brem-sur-Mer (5.1 km) for a friendly welcome, in French or English, to taste Eric and Petra Sage's wine.

Ten minutes walk from the house is a park, Park des Morinières which makes a very pleasant change from the beach with grassy areas and trees and there is an area for skate boarding.
