Overview

About the property

A True Treehouse romantically perched in Ohia Forest.

Another incredible treehouse, built with the same sensitivity to Nature as VRBO #199848, also built from recycled materials, an eco-friendly, solar powered, passive energy paradise in the forest.

Take the stairs up to above the lower canopy to a lawn of hapu'u fronds and the tops of the ohia trees. Enter your cozy multi-level nest and stay somewhere so unique you will remember it for the rest of your lives.

Unplug your kids for a change. No TV on purpose! Be transported back to the child in you, as you discover the treehouse experience with your children.

The number of windows and lush gardens all around are magical. You really have to see it in 3D to appreciate it. There is no sacrifice of comforts either, with a warm shower and thoughtfully designed and stocked kitchen. You will be amazed to llive this comfortably this high up in the trees!

If you care to even leave the treehouse, you can visit the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park just 5 miles up the road.

You are out in the forest….it's a bit like camping, but you have all the cozy comforts in a romantic, picturesque Hawaiian rain forest: kitchen with fridge and 2-burner stove, hot water shower, regular flush toilet, mood setting open faced fireplace with kindling and lots of cut wood.

Go upstairs…. A comfortable Cal King bed with windows above for star-viewing awaits you. From the Master bedroom up the Captain's ladder to the double-futon loft is another large window to the sky. Sleeping for the 5th person is available on the living room couch, a new single bed mattress. (All mattresses are new.)

The moss and fern lined exotic trail (lit by a string of festive lights at night) from your private car parking weaves uninvasively through the Hawaiian forest to the 28 steps that will take you up to your treehouse adventure.

FUN! A 50 foot walkway bends its way through the top of trees with a comfy place to sit and enjoy your morning coffee with the sounds of birds and view of the treehouse.

This could be one of your BEST adventures ever! Come visit and take it off your bucket list.

If you value a getaway out of the ordinary -- and absolutely extraordinary -- this is the place. Not for the fussy...

About Skye Peterson

I'm a Volcano enthusiast and a Treehouse Romantic and want to share this incredible place with others.

I built the treehouse to be a very romantic hideaway for myself and my honey, and now that I'm renting it out, the couples who have stayed here, including many honeymooners have appreciated the romance of the setting and ambiance. (In fact, we had considered calling it KamaSutreehouse when setting up the website!.) The setting is so private, surrounded by such natural beauty that one cannot help but be inspired. My favorite romantic details are the fireplace and the bed perched high up in the loft where you're surrounded by windows looking out at the moon and stars at night and native trees, birds and cloud formations by day.

Skye Peterson purchased this cabin in 1988

Why Skye Peterson chose Royal Hawaiian Estates

This area is untouched pristine Hawaiian Rain Forest where I could build an eco-treehouse with minimal impact on the native environmental surroundings.

What makes this cabin unique

To be able to experience an authentic eco-treehouse, built above the rain forest lower canopy. 5 large skylights, 2 over the beds for night time star viewing. Finally get living in a treehouse off your bucket list!

Guestbook comments from the owner

It was so amazing to feel warm and secure, yet seeing, feeling, the forces of nature… Indeed swaying with the trees! We wish we had more time. We were completely in awe of this creation of yours. Thanks for your hospitality.

Nothing short of Amazing

  • 5 of 5

There are not enough positive adjectives to describe Skye and this treehouse! This was, by far, the coolest, most memorable rental I have ever stayed in. My husband and I spent 3 nights in August and will certainly be planning to stay again and/or check out the other treehouses when we return to the big island. Skye's use of ingenuity and creativity has made this treehouse magical. He is also a very laid back, helpful, and responsive guy. Not only does he have an obvious passion for his work, but also has a passion for Volcano and the surrounding area. The treehouse was comfortable, clean, had all the amentities we needed, and even had a nice stove for the cooler nights. Although I have several wonderful memories of this treehouse, one of my favorites was lying in bed at night watching a meteor shower through the glass walls all around the bed. Truly spectacular. Excellent work Skye, thank you!!

First time tree house stay

  • 5 of 5

I honestly had no idea what to expect when my mother told me that we were going to be staying in a tree house on our visit to Volcano this past June. I grew up there, building my own tree houses, the typical ones children would build in their back yards, some scrap wood nailed up in a tree, and as a kid I thought it was great.

I hadn't been back to Volcano in 15 years so the town itself brought back many familiar sights and memories. Quite nostalgic. I remember riding my bike down to the general stores and cooper field and the Rec. center, and even up to KMC in the national park to go bowling or help my dad at the theater.

At first I was a little apprehensive at the idea of staying in a tree house, but that was all lost upon arrival at the Tree House. It's more of a house in a tree, with running water and power, a nice kitchen and living room, a full size bed, and a king size bed! The use of materials and natural light really surprised me. It must have taken Skye a lot of work to create this, let alone envision it all, and make it a reality.

There were 5 of us staying in the Tree House, my mother, brother and his lady, myself and mine, and we all had plenty of room and were very comfortable. It rained while we were there, which it often does in Volcano, but we stayed warm and dry during our stay.

I would recommend this for anyone who isn't afraid to try something new, it was truly a unique experience I would do again myself given the chance.

Hope this sheds a little light on this for anyone reading reviews before booking their stay, and eases any appreciation anyone may have about staying in a tree house in a rain forest.

Thanks again to Skye for letting us stay in this truley one of a kind work of art.

Owner's Response: I truly enjoy watching guests faces when they first see the TreeHouse thru the trees walking in the trail, passing one of the live trees on the way up the stairs to the front door on the first level, the same tree that runs thru the bathroom above and then again thru the bedroom next to the beds in the sleeping loft on the next level on it's way thru the roof to go outside above the TreeHouse to thrive while helping hold each level up on it way. Several other trees help in the same manner to make it a very stable building. This is definitely not the little TreeHouse banged together with some nails and a piece of plywood up in your family tree. I lived in it for many years as my home and finally decided to share the excitement of actually sleeping in a real TreeHouse if only for a few nights with other enthusiasts and you don't have to sacrifice comfort either which makes Mom and Dad happy too. Being in the rain forest with giant Tree ferns all around like Jurassic Park almost makes you expect to see the head of a Dinosaur head pop up at any minute thru the fronds and the active Volcano not far away completes the picture, it's like going way back in time, way back. Come see for yourself. TreeHouse Skye

A MUST DO for everyone's bucket list

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 (including 3 boys ages 12, 14, 15) stayed here for 4 nights while exploring volcanoes park. Skye is a wonderful guy who takes the time to give helpful information about Volcanoes Park. Just the road getting to the treehouse is so very cool that my husband got it on film (and he's not one to take many videos or pictures). If you are out of shape, or cannot climb steps then it may not be for you. But for adventure seekers and nature lover's, it's a must do.

Owner's Response: It is good to give yourself enough days to explore all the Volcano places, lava fields, lava lakes, black sands and Green sands beaches and ocean entry where the lava is going into the Pacific and have time to savor the TreeHouse it's self. Of course kids love sleeping in the tree tops with nature all around. There are a lot of stairs and levels as you would expect in a real TreeHouse but still with all the comforts of a condo. Probable the most unusual place you'll ever have the pleasure of nesting in.

Amazing Experience!

  • 5 of 5

Treehouse #2 was our home for 3 nights. My teenage son and I felt is was such a unique adventure that will be the most memorable for us during our stay on the Island. Just getting to the location and walking through the magical path to the treehouse, especially at night, was an adventure in itself. I now know that the Coqui tree frog really does say "Ko-Kee" because that's who will be serenading you during your stay.

Skye was a great host and truly lives the eco-friendly life and appreciates and respects the beauty of nature as evident in the treeshouses he built. Maholo

Owner's Response: Aloha, I am stoked when I first lead my guests alone the trail to to my TreeHouse, with the moss ( which I love) all along on both sides which I pick all the weeds and grass out of by hand, to the stairway leading up to the real TreeHouse. I usually take them under first to show them the 6 trees that actually do hold it up. At the top of the 29 stairs, right takes you into the livingroom and your cozy home for the next few nights and to the left you can go out on the 60 foot deck that stretches out thru the tree tops to a cool sitting area for morning coffee or evening star gazing. With the 5 big skylights in the ceiling inside you don't really need to go outside to get a great view of the sky from almost anywhere in the TreeHouse, even from in bed, which is my favorite. The jungle sounds of a few Koquis and lots of birds do surround you while you're there among the forest foliage just outside the window. Definitely the most unique place you'll ever stay with all the comforts of home. Come check it out for yourself and be the first one on your block to live in a TreeHouse if only for a few days and nights. Not to mention the lava viewing is just 12 minutes away, really! See you then, Skye

Loved It!

  • 5 of 5

We're a family of 5 (3 teenagers) that wanted to spend some time in the Volcano National Park area. The treehouse was awesome! Yes, a little tight, but we were in a tree, so what can you expect! Overall, we were very comfortable for the two nights we stayed. Skye gave us some great tips regarding the park and nearby dining - he seemed like a really good guy. I was shocked by how well built the house is, within a tree, in a remote location. Overall, a safe, beautiful experience that I doubt we'll ever replicate at any other location.

Owner's Response: The TreeHouse is actually built in 6 Trees, which has made it very stable and safe even in earth quakes and heavy winds or anything else nature has thrown at it for some 24 + years. Still it's very comfy inside with all the comforts of home infact it was my home for many years, so it has everything you need. Secluded and very private but just a mile from HYW 11 and 4 miles from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance it's ideal for exploring Kilauea Volcano and and it's lava fields, lava tubes and all the craters and Puu's (giant piles of ash created next to fountaining eruptions) and discovering just how amazing this growing planet is. The holiday of a life time.

One of the best experiences ever!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Skye's treehouse # 2 was exemplary. We were out of words when Skye introduced us to the place. The care and love that went into building the house is very apparent. It is easily accessible from the Volcano village by car; it's a 10 minute drive and a 15 minute drive to the national park. Even though it was a tree house, it had all the basic facilities: electricity, warm water, a small kitchen & a fireplace. The experience of staying there was second to none. We felt on top of the world in the middle of the forest, all by ourselves and it was a very romantic setting. We will surely recommend this place to anyone.

Owner's Response: I'm so happy to hear when guests have a romantic time there, that is part of the idea from the start. Being minutes from really good restaurants and the entrance to Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park makes it very convenient too and alot of time isn't spent driving. Lava viewing just 12 minutes from the door. It's easy to just stay at the TreeHouse too, make food enjoy the Skywalk that stretches out 60 feet into the forest at TreeHouse level, or just relaxing by the fire watching Lava dvd's or other popular dvd's that are there from the collection. CD's also, local flavor and oldies but goodies. Nature, privacy and uniqueness is what's here to savor in a real TreeHouse, you may never want to leave.
