About Janet & Matthew Joyce

We're Janet and Matthew Joyce and we'll be your hosts during your stay. Since you'll be our only guests, you can be sure to have as much privacy or attention as you desire while you're with us. It's completely up to you.

We have been together for 30 years and it's been quite an incredible journey for us. We have been married for 24 of those years and we've raised two incredible daughters together. Before settling down, we spent years exploring the world, camping and backpacking, and meeting people from almost every continent. Parenting has been a remarkable and rewarding focal point of our lives for the past 22 years, and it has taken us from our beginnings in Santa Cruz, California where we both went to college, to Boulder, Colorado where we spent 12 wonderful years, and now back to our home in California where we feel truly blessed and settled.

Matthew is a consultant in the energy industry, working with corporations both large and small to make a difference in this world through promoting and implementing energy efficiency products and policies. He is also something of a Renascence man between his love of exploration, travel and literature, and his life-long passion for learning all things scientific, geographical and mechanical.

Janet is a Clinical Psychologist who has spent more than 20 years working with teenagers, families and couples. She is also an avid baker (which you will discover for yourself!), a passionate gardener, and a lover of science and literature.

We welcome you to our property and into our lives, where we will strive to make your stay with us truly memorable.

Why Janet & Matthew Joyce chose Sonoma County

We've traveled widely. It's been an adventure exploring the world's diverse mix of climates, peoples, lifestyles, and cuisines. Over time we've zeroed in on where and what makes us feel at our very best: Mild weather that's great for year round gardening and outdoor activities; abundant fresh organic locally grown food and wines; open minded people of diverse backgrounds and interests; and a rural lifestyle close to big city amenities and the beach. When we put it all together no place on earth makes us feel as relaxed, as at peace, and yet as revitalized as we feel when we're spending time on the property. It's a magical spot and we're not alone in our thinking. Visitors ranging from family and friends to cottage guests and even delivery people recognize there is something special about the place. Come join us and we think you'll feel it too.

What makes this cottage unique

Two words seem to be repeated over and over when people explain how they feel when they visit here: Relaxed and Recharged. Maybe it's the secluded setting, nestled between the shady forest and the open sunny orchard, the tweets and chirping of the birds, or glimpsing the strolling comfort of the variety of wildlife who share this land with us. Perhaps it's the private hot tub next to the seasonal creek; a romantic moment beside the glowing warmth of the gas fireplace; or a second helping Janet's outrageous baked goods. Everyone has their own special moments. We fully expect you'll discover your own.

Nice Cottage in Scenic Sonoma

  • 3 of 5

Janet greets her guests personally, with a tour of her lovely cottage and freshly baked goodies to help you settle in. The cottage is essentially a single, open space very close to Janet's permanent residence. So understand what you're getting before you sign up, because this is not a private setting. The many rules, while logical, are solely geared to keep Janet in good standing with her surrounding neighbors, such as "no hot tub jets after 9pm", which cuts into enjoyment of the spa during the key wind-down time at night after a day of exploring wine country and the beautiful coast.

While we were initially somewhat struck by the close proximity of her home to the "private cottage", we had to say that Janet could not have been a more caring and considerate hostess. Once she had us settled, she disappeared completely. While the rear deck and hot tub are visible from her decks, we did feel we had a bit of privacy to enjoy the spa. A privacy partition on or just off the deck would go a long way to giving this fun little cottage the private feel you want when renting like this. Again, Janet does everything possible to give her guests all the privacy they desire. In addition, the information binder she provides covers absolutely every possible interest you may have for the region, to include exciting and scenic drives to the coast and back, beautiful local walks through adjacent orchards, great local wineries and restaurants, etc. She even has extra copies of popular info sheets so you can grab and go. While there may have been a few cobwebs here and there in the house and on the deck, everything was clean and the important stuff like the bed and the coffee are top notch! There is a microwave, toaster oven and small fridge/freezer, so you will not be "cooking" in the cottage. Plan accordingly. We truly grew to love our little cottage experience and found the single room layout large and very comfortable. The bathroom is quite cramped with the smallest sink and no screen on the window (which is the only ventilation), but everything works great. Shower stall needs a thorough scrubbing with an honest and determined detergent, but has 2 shower heads to help increase effectiveness. Nice. The gas fireplace was also warm and wonderful.

With updated bath and kitchen facilities and a more private deck with more customer-focused rules, this would be a "5" rated experience. Janet is already a "5" as a hostess. :?)

Owner's Response: I’m glad to hear that you found so much of your stay at the Cottage to be so lovely, and yet truly disheartened by the disappointments mentioned in your critique. We strive to present the cottage as it is, so the listing states that it is a studio cottage “set away from the main house,” along with a detailed description of all the amenities offered including photos of the kitchenette. Indeed, the Cottage is its own completely separate, self-contained unit. The listing says “We'll be your hosts during your stay. Since you'll be our only guests, you can be sure to have as much privacy or attention as you desire.” So, while I appreciate the nod that we go out of our way to provide our guests with privacy, I’m at a loss as to your disappointment that the Cottage is as described. We’ve had numerous honeymoon and anniversary celebrations at the Cottage, and we consistently receive feedback that it is a romantic, cozy and secluded setting. As you know: We ask our guests to inspect the premises carefully, and to inform us immediately if the cottage is not in satisfactory condition. If you had let us know at any point during your stay that cleanliness was a concern we would have addressed it immediately! I can assure you the Cottage is thoroughly cleaned to White Glove standards between every guest. So, I am mortified that you found these standards to be lacking during your visit. You stated that, “The many rules are solely geared to keep Janet in good standing with her neighbors, such as "no hot tub jets after 9pm," and yet that “rule” is the only one that has anything whatsoever to do with the neighbors. All of our other guidelines concern the care and functioning of the Cottage itself. Anyone involved in this sector of the hospitality industry, whether as a guest or owner, understands that the continuation of this business is dependent upon keeping our rentals in good standing with our communities. Asking guests to keep respectful nighttime quiet hours is a routine effort to that end. The private hot tub is available for the exclusive use of our guests 24 hours a day, and so many comment on how magical the peace and tranquility of the late night hot tub experience is. Finally, please know that it is always my most sincere wish that our guests have a superb experience and that they take warm and lasting memories home with them of their time at the Cottage and in Sonoma County. I truly hope that, even with the hitches, this will still be the case for you both!

Peaceful and private cottage with lovely views

  • 5 of 5

Janet and Matthew's cottage made the perfect retreat for our stay which was close to our daughter's wedding venue in Sebastopol. The unit's private deck area with hot tub was just what we needed during this busy but exciting time. Quiet and peaceful with lovely tree views, we were quite pleased with our choice. Janet is very thoughtful, providing tasty high quality snacks, good coffee, fresh fruit and yummy crackers and cheese. She warmly greeted us upon our arrival to welcome us and to show details of the unit. I would suggest that more details be provided in finding the unit. Once we found it, Janet showed us the installed red arrow sign indicating the driveway/road so that it could be seen easily at night.

Owner's Response: We have often heard guests remark that the quiet and seclusion of the Cottage and property are the perfect complement to the hectic pace of attending family (or other) events nearby. So I’m delighted to know that was the case for you as well. And thanks for the feedback on the directions, too. We do send out an advance packet of information to all our guests that includes numerous attachments with links, resources and information about the Cottage and the area. We always include an attachment with very detailed driving directions to the Cottage (down to the 1/10th mile). I apologize if in the abundance of information you may have missed that one, but so glad that once you found us it was easy from there! Also, we took your advice and added reflective tape to both sides of our mailbox so that it is much more visible for night arrivals! We're always looking for ways to improve our guests' experience, so thanks again for that!! We hope to see you back soon for another stay. The hot tub and fresh baked treats will be waiting.

Cozy and comfy!

  • 5 of 5

Even though we arrived late at night, Matthew was very thorough and welcoming checking us in. Beautiful location.

Comfy and clean. Home baked cookies were yummy. Bed was very comfortable. Loved the deck that was surrounded by

beautiful trees. We were visited by hummingbirds everyday. One in particular just liked to sit on the branch by the deck and

observe us. A lovely property and a good value. We would definitely stay at this property again.

Thanks Matthew and Janet for making everything wonderful.

The Lovely Garden Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The Garden Cottage was delightful! Nicely appointed, spotlessly clean, quite large while being one room (it has a couch and coffee table, a full-sized dining table and a queen sized bed) and surrounded by beautiful gardens and wooded areas filled with birds, deer and other wildlife. The cottage has everything you need for an easy breakfast or lunch. And Janet left us cheese, delicious cookies and snacks. There is a lovely deck with a cafe table and chairs, a hot tub and its very own great horned owl! It was a joy to wake up in the large studio with vaulted ceilings on a comfy bed after a good nights sleep. It seems like it is far out in the country, but it is really just 10 minutes into downtown Sebastopol and 10 minutes to Occidental. it is near many wineries.

Janet was terrific. She was very responsive to our questions, provided a weath of information on restaurants, sights and wineries and great directions to the cottage. We loved our dinner at the Underwood bar and bistro, thanks to Janet's recommendation! Bill and I would definitely return if we are going to be in the area again. Thank you, Janet!

Owner's Response: How delightful that you had the rare treat of seeing our Great Horned Owl sitting in the fir trees behind the Cottage! And I know how important it is to go that extra mile to help our guests have a wonderful stay, so thanks for the nod. Do keep the Cottage in mind if you’re in the area again. We’d love to host you anytime!

The cottage is located down a private country lane in the hills just 10 minutes from downtown Sebastopol, making it convenient to all that Sonoma County has to offer. And trust us when we say, that's a lot!

Once you venture out and explore the surrounding area beyond the cottage you will delight in so many Sonoma County offerings. The ones listed below are just a taste:

There are more than 400 wineries in Sonoma County and virtually all of them are within a one hour drive of the cottage. There are 75 wineries and tasting rooms within 15 minutes of us alone, including some world class vineyards and some quaint, small tasting rooms as well.

The charming small towns of Sebastopol, Graton, Forestville, Occidential and Freestone are all less than 10 minutes away offering nightlife, restaurants and bakeries, coffee and tea houses, bookstores, specialty boutiques, spas, antique shops and art galleries.

There are 20 local outdoor farmers' markets in Sonoma County (several are open year round), ensuring that you can enjoy locally sourced organic produce and a wide variety of local artisanal crafts and specialty foods, breads, cheeses, jams and honey every day of week, except Mondays.

Bodega Bay's fresh seafood, beaches and the dramatic scenery of the Sonoma Coastline are just over 20 minutes away via a scenic drive from the Cottage. We've got redwoods growing right here on the property. But if you want to explore Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve it's less than half an hour way across the Russian River in Guernville. There you can stroll or hike among some of California's oldest living redwood trees.

And for outdoor enthusiasts there are also: more than 140 miles of beautiful hiking trails both along the magnificent coastline and in the hills and forests of Sonoma County, hundreds of miles of road and mountain bicycling trails from easy, meandering paths to strenuous, technical rides, canoeing and kayaking, windsurfing, open ocean and/or fresh water fishing, and even hot air ballooning opportunities nearby.

Within Sonoma County you can also enjoy an array of cultural activities including, live Shakespeare plays, internationally recognized musical acts, symphonic performances, museums, shopping outlet stores and the Art Trails tour of local artists' studios and the Farm Trails tour of Sonoma County's artisanal producers, agriculture and family farms.

We will provide you with up to date calendars and lists of local events, schedules for Farmers' Markets, maps of the area, restaurant menus, pricing and menus for the day spas, winery and tasting room hours and pricing, and even our own local favorites and recommendations, all to enhance your enjoyment of our area.

Wine Country Garden Cottage is very well designed for everything from a super relaxed and low-key, private romantic get away to an action-packed adventure based vacation experience. And everything in between!

We're glad to tell you even more. Just send us a note with your questions and we'll be happy to fill you in!
