We're Janet and Matthew Joyce and we'll be your hosts during your stay. Since you'll be our only guests, you can be sure to have as much privacy or attention as you desire while you're with us. It's completely up to you.
We have been together for 32 years and it's been quite an incredible journey for us. We have been married for 25 of those years and we've raised two incredible daughters together. Before settling down, we spent years exploring the world, camping and backpacking, and meeting people from almost every continent. Parenting has been a remarkable and rewarding focal point of our lives for the past 23 years, and it has taken us from our beginnings in Santa Cruz, California where we both went to college, to Boulder, Colorado where we spent 12 wonderful years, and now back to our home in California where we feel truly blessed and settled.
Matthew is a consultant in the energy industry, working with corporations both large and small to make a difference in this world through promoting and implementing energy efficiency products and policies. He is also something of a Renascence man between his love of exploration, travel and literature, and his life-long passion for learning all things scientific, geographical and mechanical.
Janet is a Clinical Psychologist who has spent more than 20 years working with teenagers, families and couples. She is also an avid baker (which you will discover for yourself!), a passionate gardener, and a lover of science and literature.
We welcome you to our property and into our lives, where we will strive to make your stay with us truly memorable.
We've traveled widely. It's been an adventure exploring the world's diverse mix of climates, peoples, lifestyles, and cuisines. Over time we've zeroed in on where and what makes us feel at our very best: Mild weather that's great for year round gardening and outdoor activities; abundant fresh organic locally grown food and wines; open minded people of diverse backgrounds and interests; and a rural lifestyle close to big city amenities and the beach. When we put it all together no place on earth makes us feel as relaxed, as at peace, and yet as revitalized as we feel when we're spending time on the property. It's a magical spot and we're not alone in our thinking. Visitors ranging from family and friends to cottage guests and even delivery people recognize there is something special about the place. Come join us and we think you'll feel it too.
Two words seem to be repeated over and over when people explain how they feel when they visit here: Relaxed and Recharged. Maybe it's the secluded setting, nestled between the shady forest and the open sunny orchard, the tweets and chirping of the birds, or glimpsing the strolling comfort of the variety of wildlife who share this land with us. Perhaps it's the private hot tub next to the seasonal creek; a romantic moment beside the glowing warmth of the gas fireplace; or a second helping Janet's outrageous baked goods. Everyone has their own special moments. We fully expect you'll discover your own.
Unfortunately, we missed the deadline for submitting a review, so my feedback today is partly to offset some of the comments that I perceived were negative in one of your last reviews and I was very disappointed in their comments.
Overall I would have given you a 5 star rating since the cottage was exactly as we hoped.
Regarding some of the comments made about privacy, the "rules" for the hot tub and the status of the bathroom. I found that there was a lot of privacy and we never felt there was a lack of privacy.
I don't feel you need a "privacy screen" etc. since part of the charm of the back deck is the fact you can see the sloping garden with birds, etc. If there was a screen then you would feel boxed in and it wouldn't be as nice.
I didn't find the rules regarding the use of the hot tub after 9 to be strange. Every hotel has late night rules regarding noise and in fact at most hotels you can't use the pool/hot tub late in the evening as you can at the cottage.
I found the bathroom charming, clean, and not too small. I like what you've done with the bathroom and it is a good size considering the overall size of the cottage.
The cottage has a rustic charm and overall, we were very pleased and found excellent value. I love all the touches (picnic backpack/fresh water/snacks/ robes and I could go on). You both have obviously spent a lot of time/effort thinking of the comfort of your guests and it shows. I was saddened by the negative review I read since I don't feel it was reflective of our experience and I truly wish I had left great review for you before we ran out of time.
Pretty space, inside and out. We came for quiet and rest and found just that. Cozy bed, soft linens, great hot tub under the stars, a pretty walk through the area, good restaurants and especially nice, homemade cookies, teas and coffee, cheese and crackers all there when we arrived. We'd definitely come back- and have encouraged friends to visit as well.
A delightful location, tucked in the woods where we heard owls, quails and coyotes. The cottage is clean and well equipped with a comfy bed and a hot tub that was great to soak in after a day of touring. It is very private and the hosts did a great job of providing us with what we needed and maintaining our privacy. We really enjoyed the 3 mile walking trail around the neighbourhood and seeing the wild turkeys, lemon groves and old orchards. We highly recommend you stay here!
It is hard to put into words how unique the surroundings, cottage and Janet and Mathew were. The location was ideal for us to discover not only the wine areas but also the Pacific coast and redwoods. We found some great restaurants thanks to our hosts spending so much time and effort on providing info and previous renters reviews. We would absolutely return here and recommend highly to anyone visiting the area. I almost forgot the topping of the cake Janet and Mathew leave a wonderful basket of goodies which included Janet's homemade chocolate chip cookies. By and far the best cookies I have ever eaten. Thank you both for making this a peaceful most enjoyable visit.
Janet greets her guests personally, with a tour of her lovely cottage and freshly baked goodies to help you settle in. The cottage is essentially a single, open space very close to Janet's permanent residence. So understand what you're getting before you sign up, because this is not a private setting. The many rules, while logical, are solely geared to keep Janet in good standing with her surrounding neighbors, such as "no hot tub jets after 9pm", which cuts into enjoyment of the spa during the key wind-down time at night after a day of exploring wine country and the beautiful coast.
While we were initially somewhat struck by the close proximity of her home to the "private cottage", we had to say that Janet could not have been a more caring and considerate hostess. Once she had us settled, she disappeared completely. While the rear deck and hot tub are visible from her decks, we did feel we had a bit of privacy to enjoy the spa. A privacy partition on or just off the deck would go a long way to giving this fun little cottage the private feel you want when renting like this. Again, Janet does everything possible to give her guests all the privacy they desire. In addition, the information binder she provides covers absolutely every possible interest you may have for the region, to include exciting and scenic drives to the coast and back, beautiful local walks through adjacent orchards, great local wineries and restaurants, etc. She even has extra copies of popular info sheets so you can grab and go. While there may have been a few cobwebs here and there in the house and on the deck, everything was clean and the important stuff like the bed and the coffee are top notch! There is a microwave, toaster oven and small fridge/freezer, so you will not be "cooking" in the cottage. Plan accordingly. We truly grew to love our little cottage experience and found the single room layout large and very comfortable. The bathroom is quite cramped with the smallest sink and no screen on the window (which is the only ventilation), but everything works great. Shower stall needs a thorough scrubbing with an honest and determined detergent, but has 2 shower heads to help increase effectiveness. Nice. The gas fireplace was also warm and wonderful.
With updated bath and kitchen facilities and a more private deck with more customer-focused rules, this would be a "5" rated experience. Janet is already a "5" as a hostess. :?)
Janet and Matthew's cottage made the perfect retreat for our stay which was close to our daughter's wedding venue in Sebastopol. The unit's private deck area with hot tub was just what we needed during this busy but exciting time. Quiet and peaceful with lovely tree views, we were quite pleased with our choice. Janet is very thoughtful, providing tasty high quality snacks, good coffee, fresh fruit and yummy crackers and cheese. She warmly greeted us upon our arrival to welcome us and to show details of the unit. I would suggest that more details be provided in finding the unit. Once we found it, Janet showed us the installed red arrow sign indicating the driveway/road so that it could be seen easily at night.
Even though we arrived late at night, Matthew was very thorough and welcoming checking us in. Beautiful location.
Comfy and clean. Home baked cookies were yummy. Bed was very comfortable. Loved the deck that was surrounded by
beautiful trees. We were visited by hummingbirds everyday. One in particular just liked to sit on the branch by the deck and
observe us. A lovely property and a good value. We would definitely stay at this property again.
Thanks Matthew and Janet for making everything wonderful.
