The garden cottage, set away from the main house, sits on a peaceful, sun drenched acre and a half of very secluded land, down a quiet country lane, with seasonal creeks just beyond your private deck. You will delight in waking to the sounds of birds chirping and will likely see our resident family of deer roaming the property. You will enjoy the backdrop of eucalyptus, redwood, oak and fir trees as you sit relaxing in your own private hot tub, while also enjoying the views of apple orchards and tree-lined vistas in the distance. The cottage comes equipped with all the amenities you will need for your comfort and enjoyment, including plush bathrobes, organic bathing products, luxurious bedding, a stocked kitchenette with fresh ground local organic coffee and teas, and your own welcome basket upon your arrival including freshly baked and other delectable treats to begin your vacation in style.
We're Janet and Matthew Joyce and we'll be your hosts during your stay. Since you'll be our only guests, you can be sure to have as much privacy or attention as you desire while you're with us. It's completely up to you.
We have been together for 30 years and it's been quite an incredible journey for us. We have been married for 24 of those years and we've raised two incredible daughters together. Before settling down, we spent years exploring the world, camping and backpacking, and meeting people from almost every continent. Parenting has been a remarkable and rewarding focal point of our lives for the past 22 years, and it has taken us from our beginnings in Santa Cruz, California where we both went to college, to Boulder, Colorado where we spent 12 wonderful years, and now back to our home in California where we feel truly blessed and settled.
Matthew is a consultant in the energy industry, working with corporations both large and small to make a difference in this world through promoting and implementing energy efficiency products and policies. He is also something of a Renascence man between his love of exploration, travel and literature, and his life-long passion for learning all things scientific, geographical and mechanical.
Janet is a Clinical Psychologist who has spent more than 20 years working with teenagers, families and couples. She is also an avid baker (which you will discover for yourself!), a passionate gardener, and a lover of science and literature.
We welcome you to our property and into our lives, where we will strive to make your stay with us truly memorable.
We've traveled widely. It's been an adventure exploring the world's diverse mix of climates, peoples, lifestyles, and cuisines. Over time we've zeroed in on where and what makes us feel at our very best: Mild weather that's great for year round gardening and outdoor activities; abundant fresh organic locally grown food and wines; open minded people of diverse backgrounds and interests; and a rural lifestyle close to big city amenities and the beach. When we put it all together no place on earth makes us feel as relaxed, as at peace, and yet as revitalized as we feel when we're spending time on the property. It's a magical spot and we're not alone in our thinking. Visitors ranging from family and friends to cottage guests and even delivery people recognize there is something special about the place. Come join us and we think you'll feel it too.
Two words seem to be repeated over and over when people explain how they feel when they visit here: Relaxed and Recharged. Maybe it's the secluded setting, nestled between the shady forest and the open sunny orchard, the tweets and chirping of the birds, or glimpsing the strolling comfort of the variety of wildlife who share this land with us. Perhaps it's the private hot tub next to the seasonal creek; a romantic moment beside the glowing warmth of the gas fireplace; or a second helping Janet's outrageous baked goods. Everyone has their own special moments. We fully expect you'll discover your own.
Janet and Matthew's cottage is in a great location. We enjoyed Russian River wineries, the Armstrong Redwoods and the pacific ocean. We also enjoyed driving to Calistoga. The cottage is well appointed, clean and a terrific deal. The hot tub was in excellent condition, very comfortable. Also, Janet goes beyond what's expected. She supplies a lot of information about the surrounding area. Rent with confidence and have a great time like we did.
This is a wonderful cottage that is both peaceful and charming. Very clean! We loved the space, location and hot tub. We were able to drive to Russian River, rent bikes, hike in national park, wine taste, see Broadway under the stars and find places to eat that were like being a part of the community. I highly recommend. If you are looking for a place that has great energy and feels like a home .... this would be the place. In the morning we woke up to the birds and a few deer.
We enjoyed coming 'home' to our lovely comfortable retreat in the woods with a deck and hot tub! The owner even provided a welcome basket with fresh ground coffee, homemade cookies, nuts, fruit etc. We'd definitely stay here again. Florae
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the cottage. The surroundings are lovely, accommodations very nice and comfortable, and so much to do within a short distance. Cottage-keepers Matt & Janet are very friendly and down to earth people and they obviously love where they are. We enjoyed the hot tub, hiking nearby, and visits to the redwoods, beach, local wineries and restaurants - could not have asked for a better experience!
Excellent location for your Russian River wine experience.
Super cute little cottage with all the amenities you could need (hot tub, fireplace, outdoor seating, expertly curated guides, local history books, fridge, sink).
Great setting - wake to the sound of all sorts of birds (owls, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, etc.).
Outstanding hospitality (complimentary cookies, snacks, fruits, coffee).
You really can't go wrong staying here. If we found ourselves back in the area, we'd book again in a heartbeat. There are TONS of wineries in the area. While it's a little bit off the beaten path, towns with wine tours are only a few minutes drive and there's Uber - a return trip from Healdsburg (we slowly made up way up there through the day) was only $30.
My husband and I stayed at Janet and Matthew's cottage for a weekend and everything about our stay was perfect. It's clear that they take time and care to keep the cottage pristine and stocked with anything you need and even things you don't know you need. The spa and view of the starts at night were an especially excellent way to end each evening.
The cottage is located down a private country lane in the hills just 10 minutes from downtown Sebastopol, making it convenient to all that Sonoma County has to offer. And trust us when we say, that's a lot!
Once you venture out and explore the surrounding area beyond the cottage you will delight in so many Sonoma County offerings. The ones listed below are just a taste:
There are more than 400 wineries in Sonoma County and virtually all of them are within a one hour drive of the cottage. There are 75 wineries and tasting rooms within 15 minutes of us alone, including some world class vineyards and some quaint, small tasting rooms as well.
The charming small towns of Sebastopol, Graton, Forestville, Occidential and Freestone are all less than 10 minutes away offering nightlife, restaurants and bakeries, coffee and tea houses, bookstores, specialty boutiques, spas, antique shops and art galleries.
There are 20 local outdoor farmers' markets in Sonoma County (several are open year round), ensuring that you can enjoy locally sourced organic produce and a wide variety of local artisanal crafts and specialty foods, breads, cheeses, jams and honey every day of week, except Mondays.
Bodega Bay's fresh seafood, beaches and the dramatic scenery of the Sonoma Coastline are just over 20 minutes away via a scenic drive from the Cottage. We've got redwoods growing right here on the property. But if you want to explore Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve it's less than half an hour way across the Russian River in Guernville. There you can stroll or hike among some of California's oldest living redwood trees.
And for outdoor enthusiasts there are also: more than 140 miles of beautiful hiking trails both along the magnificent coastline and in the hills and forests of Sonoma County, hundreds of miles of road and mountain bicycling trails from easy, meandering paths to strenuous, technical rides, canoeing and kayaking, windsurfing, open ocean and/or fresh water fishing, and even hot air ballooning opportunities nearby.
Within Sonoma County you can also enjoy an array of cultural activities including, live Shakespeare plays, internationally recognized musical acts, symphonic performances, museums, shopping outlet stores and the Art Trails tour of local artists' studios and the Farm Trails tour of Sonoma County's artisanal producers, agriculture and family farms.
We will provide you with up to date calendars and lists of local events, schedules for Farmers' Markets, maps of the area, restaurant menus, pricing and menus for the day spas, winery and tasting room hours and pricing, and even our own local favorites and recommendations, all to enhance your enjoyment of our area.
Wine Country Garden Cottage is very well designed for everything from a super relaxed and low-key, private romantic get away to an action-packed adventure based vacation experience. And everything in between!
