Your own private home
Just so there’s no confusion, this is a stand-alone home. Not a granny unit, or a in-law unit, or a ADU. This is your own place with a lovely, private, NorCal garden stocked with japanese maples, succulents, calla lilies and lemon trees.
Initially we thought the location was too far north for dropping off our freshman son at UC Berkeley (5 miles/20min). And it is a bit of a schlepp, but it was so worth it to arrive back at our sanctuary and just hang out to decompress. Which we did for six days. Other reviews mention Bart, the grocery store, restaurants, etc. We used Yelp and found lots of great places just at the bottom of the hill. But I digress let’s start at the beginning:
In the hills from the town area of El Cerrito is a pretty, view packed residential area where this house is. Using Waze is highly recommended at least your first time going there. The short and steep down-tilting driveway adds to the property’s privacy, but makes it challenging to anything but a small SUV. Which we luckily had and it was no problem for us. Plenty of street parking for other types of cars.
This is probably the most thoughtfully provisioned home I’ve ever been in. Nothing has been forgotten or left out. If you need a screwdriver, micro USB phone charger, fan, serrated knife, protractor or WD-40 it’s there. We even made a guessing game for what might be missing and only came up with three things: pizza cutter, gardening gloves and trigonometry calculator. Not to say we ever needed those objects, they even may have been there, we just never came across them.
It’s also immaculately clean and a beautifully decorated visual balance between modern architecture and warm furnishings and textiles (we’re two Art Directors). Large sliding doors expand your visual space to the garden and welcome fresh breezes. The bed was so comfy that I slept like a zombie, my sleep app tells me I had 98% sleep quality. That’s only happened twice before. We cooked on the Italian stove, kept food in the new fridge, washed clothes in the Bosch washer and dryer and ran the silent Bosch dishwasher. Everything worked great. Overall it’s a light, bright and airy space.
Natasha asks that guests water the garden (to insure your privacy no one comes onto the property but you) which I was very happy to do. It’s so zen and peaceful, beware you don’t fall into “hose hypnosis” and find yourself still watering much, much later.
We hope to come again in the future.
Very nice place and great host. Highly recommended.
Everything was in order, highly recommend!
Very comfortable, quiet, and attractive
This was the second time we stayed in this cottage in the hills above El Cerrito. We returned because it is very private, clean, light, has a well equipped kitchen, and a pretty garden. If you have a car, it is convenient to Berkeley and an easy drive up to Napa as well. The Bart station is a bit of a hike, but certainly available to those who like to exercise. The house works really well for us when we visit our family.
El Cerrito Heaven
Conveniently located, beautifully designed, thoughtfully provisioned, friendly and helpful host. Delightful garden. Spent several afternoon hours with our two grandchildren there. Hope to spend all our future visits to our grandchildren here. Always our first choice.
The place is amazing. The neighborhood is very well located
The house is perfectly located and has everything you need. Very quiet and peaceful and yet close to the city. 30 minute walk to El Cerrito Bart station and 45 minutes ride to downtown SF.
