1 Bedroom, 1 Bath guest house with spectacular garden and canyon views

This charming guest house offers a unique experience in one of San Diego's finest historic, neighborhood of Mission Hills which is conveniently located in the heart of the city. Our enchanting garden guest house is found at the end of a cul de sac and sits on one of Mission Hills' gorgeous canyons. It is attached to the main house yet is completely private and separate. There is a private entrance on the side of the main house, and there is always plenty of on-street parking. This retreat offers a unique garden that promises to enchant and make you feel as though you are on a tranquil oasis. Here you can enjoy a gorgeous pool and jacuzzi surrounded by a lush garden. The wildlife is vibrant and you will be accompanied by hummingbirds buzzing about, mocking birds, finches, red-tail hawks flying overhead, and our beloved resident great horned owls! The living room and master bedroom open up to a lovely private patio where you can enjoy the gorgeous canyon that the house sits on.

Mission Hills is a wonderful neighborhood to go for a walk or a jog. If you are an architecture enthusiast you will enjoy various genres. Architectural styles from 1908 through World War II are represented in this district including: Craftsman, Spanish Revival, Mission Revival, Dutch Colonial, Greek Revival, Prairie Style, English Tudor and others. Several Master Architects also built in this area, including: Emmor Brooke Weaver, Nathan Rigdon, David Owen Dryden, Richard Requa, William Hebbard and others. You will be within walking distance to Mission Hills restaurants, coffee shops, and retail shops. It is also within walking distance to the famous Old Town area where the trolley is also located, Presidio park where there is a replica of one of the 21 California Missions, and Pioneer Park where you can enjoy a great playground and huge grassy area if you have children or not! Other San Diego attractions are all with 10-15 minutes with it’s easy freeway access and no traffic ever within Mission Hills. (Without a doubt one of the pluses to being in this neighborhood.) The interstate 5 and 8 are 5 minutes away. The airport, Littly Italy, Downtown & Gaslamp District, World famous San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Sea World, Petco Park, the Harbor, Seaport Village, Coronado, Mission Bay and other beaches, Fashion and Mission Valley shopping centers, and golf courses are ALL within 15 minutes. La Jolla, North County, Torrey Pines golf course, Del Mar Racetrack, Legoland, and Safari Park are about 20-30 minutes away. If you are interested in heading south the border crossing is only 15 minutes away. As mentioned before regardless of your agenda everything is perfectly accessible from this location.

This quaint guest house is fully furnished and equipped to make your stay comfortable and cozy as if you were in your own home. It has a fully equipped kitchen that includes a double induction stove top, microwave, small refrigerator, coffee maker, and the basic cooking materials such as flour, olive oil, spices, sugar, coffee, & tea. The crown jewel of this home is the master bedroom of this guest house. It is enveloped in glass windows which gives you the sensation you are in a tree house. It overlooks the vegetable garden and out into the canyon. There are high quality linens for both the bed and sofa-bed.

The colorful living room is ample yet cozy and comes fully stocked with all the necessary amenitites: large flat screen TV, wireless broadband internet, DVD player and movies, books, magazines, stereo, and a pull-out sofa bed. It is inviting for get togethers, movie nights, or curling up to read a good book. There is a large library where you will find an array from which to choose from.

This home is designed to showcase the garden which is shared with the main house and it offers an array of activities. It is our pride and joy so you will be sure to enjoy all it has to offer. The jacuzzi is perfect for that evening glass of wine after enjoying a romantic dinner. There is wonderful BBQ area that has a bar where you can sit and sip a margarita, a dinning table with chairs to enjoy a delicious meal, a fire pit to sit around on those unusual chilly nights. You may want to get some exercise in and do a few laps in the pool or just float and soak in the serenity of this oasis. If you are a meditator or feel inspired to try it there is just the spot for you under the ficus tree in this specially designed meditation nook with its own buddha looking over you. Pull up a lounge chair with a good book, or go for a walk in the fruit tree orchard and see what’s in bloom! About Maria Helene Kraul

My name is Maria Helene, I grew up in this house, went to school in this neighborhood, and currently live here. I am an avid gardener and lover of nature!

Maria Helene Kraul purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Maria Helene Kraul chose San Diego County

This is a beautiful ranch-style home nestled in one of Mission Hills' canyons. It overlooks part of Presidio Park and one of the San Diego Missions. I am a long-time resident of Mission Hills. I love my neighborhood and the city of San Diego. I feel privileged to open my home with guests and feel eager to share what I consider to be an oasis of peace within my small natural preserve!

What makes this cottage unique

This guest house is attached to the main house yet it is completely private. It sits at the end of a cul de sac therefore it is very private and quiet. The jewel and asset of this property is the garden. Here you can walk amongst fruit trees, sit under a large ficus and watch hummingbirds bath, watch red-tail hawks fly above, if your lucky you may spot great horned owls as they fly out over the canyon at dusk.

This is a beautiful property well off the beaten track.

quiet, secluded and quaint. Although you could walk to Old Town it is a long walk on narrow streets without side walks. Up hill all the way back. The weather was a bit cool while we were there and we found the guest house cold as it shares the furnace with the main house which is above the guest house and heat rises. I think renting in the summer would be much better with this property as one would more likely use the pool and deck.

Lovely oasis in a central location

  • 5 of 5

Staying in our casita in Mission Hills was truly one of the highlights of our vacation in San Diego! Everything was as described - immaculate, comfortable and well-stocked. The view from the bedroom is, of course, the highlight - as other reviewers have mentioned - but we also enjoyed browsing the library, admiring the artwork, sipping wine on the patio, and taking daily tours of the fabulous gardens.

Maria Helene and her family were such gracious and helpful hosts, while still giving us a feeling of complete privacy. The property and surrounding neighborhood is a delight to explore for gardeners and lovers of architecture alike. The location is central to all of the major attractions of the area, with most things between 10 - 30 minutes drive away.

We will definitely recommend a stay here to friends, and hope to have the chance to return in the future for another relaxing stay!

Beautiful property, beautiful neighborhood, beautiful city. My wife and I recently spent our 35th wedding anniversary in San Diego and stayed at this "enchanting guest house nestled in a canyon".and could not have been more pleased with our decision. The gardens, the pool, the fountains, the hummingbirds, the books, the sheets, the decor all made for a very relaxing, pleasant stay. Also, the hosts could not have been more hospitable and accommodating. We will base our next trip to San Diego on the availability of this beautiful property.

Lovely hideaway in Mission Hills

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful weekend stay at this charming little house. The dwelling consists of a bright bedroom with walls of windows, a large living room with sound system and large flat screen TV, a small, well-furnished kitchen and small bathroom with shower. There is a very private patio with table and chairs. The casita is tucked under a master bedroom addition of the main house. There is a private entrance separate from the owner’s residence. The space is delightfully furnished and houses a joyful collection of exotic masks, pottery and books. The rooms have many windows that flood the space with light. The windows are screened and open to allow the cool sea breeze to blow through the home. The bed and bath linens were of very nice quality.

The home is very clean and everything was in good repair. The photos posted on the HomeAway web site accurately represent the property.

The little house lies alongside of one of the most delightful private gardens we have ever experienced. The garden is a 30 year labor of love on the part of the home’s talented owner and contains a variety of interesting plants, lovely seating areas, fountains and a swimming pool. It is magical! We wished we had had more time just to spend in the garden.

The property’s Mission Hills location is a very safe, upscale, vintage neighborhood right in the middle of most of the great activities that San Diego has to offer. The home is near interstate highways 5 and 8 so getting around is easy. There is freeway white noise but we found that it faded away unobtrusively into the background. This is San Diego and you will need a car. Street parking on the quiet cul de sac is readily available. While there are many restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc. in Mission Hills and nearby Hillcrest, in our opinion, they are not within easy walking distance.

We did not actually meet with Mary Helene but we felt she was very helpful in scheduling our stay and in getting us into the property at a time that was convenient for us.

We have used HomeAway for years. This was one of our best experiences. We highly recommend this Casita.

Beautiful Guest House in a Great Location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 had a wonderful week in San Diego at this casita in May. It had everything we needed. Our young adult kids shared the queen size sofa bed, which was fine with a memory foam topper. Master bedroom bed was very comfortable, and I am picky. The kitchen reminded us of Italy, with its pretty green tile, and the European style bathroom was adequate with plenty of hot water. I made coffee every morning, and enjoyed watching the hummingbirds delighting in the fountain just outside the window. Maria's gracious mother gave us a tour of her terraced garden. So beautiful! The pool was tempting, but May is a little cooler than the weather to which we Tennesseans are accustomed!

The area nearby fed us well, and our favorite breakfast was had at Farmer's Bottega. We were only minutes from the Zoos, Coronado Island, Old Town, Little Italy, Petco Park...everything is right there. Enjoy the well kept, varied homes of the neighborhood and the views! Don't miss out on this one!

Just as described. . .only better!

  • 5 of 5

How we wished we could have stayed longer! My husband and I enjoyed this wonderful guest house just for a weekend prior to a business meeting in San Diego. I travel for business several times a month and did not want another hotel experience for our short stay. The guest house was just as described and as some reviewers have stated - pictures don't do it justice. The gardens, pool, and jacuzzi are just gorgeous. The gardens are so beautiful - we did not tire of wandering through them and always found plants we hadn't seen on the last trip through. I tried to read a book by the pool waterfall one morning but was completely distracted by the numerous birds who were also visiting the gardens! I should mention that thanks to the solar lights the grounds outside are almost as wonderful in the evening! We grilled in the outdoor kitchen and enjoyed the seating area there. Our entire stay was fabulous and relaxing. Falling asleep in the "tree house" to all the nature sounds outdoors was just fantastic!

As other reviewers have stated- the inside of the guesthouse was extremely clean and comfortable. I could have spent days curled up on the comfortable couches and reading the wide variety of books and magazines. Possibly the only thing missing in the kitchen was a few more utensils to cook with and they happened to be out of pepper. Certainly nothing that dampened our experience. The coffee provided was terrific!

Thank you to the very gracious owners for sharing this beautiful guesthouse and gardens. We loved it!
