Why Paige Kirkland chose Bryson City Area

Buying the Simple Times Cabin was a fulfillment of a 'dream' that we have had for years. We had been looking for a place in the mountains for several years. One day we happened to be looking at some property on Dicks Creek Road. Once we saw the property that we originally came to view, we knew that it wasn't for us, but like always we went on up the road to see what else we could find. When we came to the gravel road, we both got interested in what we were seeing. A gravel road, a roaring creek, and a beautiful forest-what more could we ask for. When we pulled over the bridge that leads you onto Choice Place we immediately got out. My husband said that the smile on my face said it all. The sound of the rushing creek and the beautiful woods that surrounded were absolutely amazing.

What makes this cabin unique

Dicks Creek runs in front of our cabin.

Our property backs up to the Nantahala National Forest.

One of our favorite cabins

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Simple Times, the cabin had all the furnishings to make you feel like you were at home. My kids loved the movies and games there and the creek was so relaxing. It was secluded but yet close to everything. We will definitely be returning to the cabin!

The pictures on the website are misleading. There was no sign or markings to locate the cabin. First, you must drive through a local homeowner's front yard to get to the cabin. The most disappointing thing was the area near the creek. The steps leading down were risky to say the least. The owner even posted a sign "Use Steps at Your Own Risk". The only place to sit was a picnic table or a 2x6 post bench. Our main goal was to sit by the creek and relax, so much for that. The 'grill' was a $20 old thing that looked like it could fall apart at any moment. If you have asthma or allergies this cabin is not for you. The interior was paneled with 4x8 sheets of unfinished, unsanded, exterior wood. The smell was overwhelming. The sun porch had no ventilation except for windows, which we opened and after 2 days we still could not use it. The furniture, a sofa bed and wood rocker, were so used you could not sit on them. You would literally slip off the sofa. We would have notified the owner but there was not anyway this could be corrected while we were there. The bed was comfortable though. The owners were very pleasant and easy to work with for booking. I would suggest they visit more often to inspect. We have stayed at a $65 per night cabin that was eloquent compared to this. The town, Sylva, was very close and we ate at the Creekside, which had very good food. Cherokee was a short ride. I guess the most positive thing about the cabin is it was in the Smoky's.

Owner's Response: We try to be very accommodating to our guests, but apparently some can not be pleased. We have gotten several 5 star reviews both before and after this guest visited. We are up in the area often to check up on the cabin. We felt like we were very accommodating to Janet-even to the extent of giving back $99 when she called and told us she made a mistake on booking a night too soon. If she was that dissatisfied she should have called us upon arrival and we would have gladly refunded her money so that Janet could have gone and found her one of those $65 cabins! A phone call would have gone a long way with us-it's easy to run someone's pride and joy down over the computer. My husband has worked very hard in renovating this cabin. The wood walls were put there on purpose to give a "rustic" look-Janet should have looked a little closer at the photographs that were on the website. Our latest review even states the cabin is even better that what the pictures indicate. We are working class people and take much pride in this cabin!

Great Location

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful little cabin in a great location. A feeling of seclusion is enhanced by the abundance of trees which provide a refreshing cool shade on the deck, even in the heat of Summer's daytime high temperatures. The little creek which flows just in front of the cabin was an instant hit with my grandsons. Dillsboro is only about 5 minutes away and Cherokee and Bryson City about 15 minutes. Cell service is hit and miss and there is no WiFi. I would stay again and have already recommended this little corner of the Smokies to friends and family.

Lovely Clean, Quiet, "Simple" cabin

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd time staying at Simple Times. When I asked my 8-year old this year if she wanted the same cabin or a new one, her eyes got big and she responded: "I loved that cabin".

The location is quiet, about a 10 minute drive off the main highway, with the last 0.5 miles up a gravel road (cars can make it up just fine, but I wouldn't take a low-rider corvette). It's about 15 minutes to downtown Sylva (nice quiet local town), 20 minutes to the Blue Ridge Parkway, 25 minutes to Cherokee, or ~75 minutes to Gaitlinburg. The kids like going to Bogarts in the town of Sylva for dinner, with a stop at Jack the Dipper ice cream afterwards. Both cozy casual local places.

Cabin itself is very clean. Linens and towels were nice and clean, though I'd recommend bringing your own pillows as everyone has their own preferences there. Bathroom was clean with a full stand-up shower. Sofa seats 3 with a rocking chair and dining table benches in the same room. Dining table is nice and sturdy and we played many board games on it. The sunroom is a nice cozy place to relax as well.

Lastly, one of the other reviews mentioned a problem with the bed in the master bedroom. We had no such issue. Bed was comfortable, didn't squeak, was clean, had a blanket. Pillows were a bit thin, but as I mentioned above, you should bring your own anyway.

Cabin has lots of ceiling fans and climate control was easy enough to use and adjust. We never used the TV (I told the kids "simple times" means no TV) or used the kitchen (vacation is about eating out!), so I can't comment on those items.

Owners replied to questions via e-mail very quickly without issue. They are very nice to work with. The only reason we wouldn't choose this cabin next year is if we choose to stay on the TN side of the mountains...otherwise we'd book it again in a heartbeat.
