Exceptional vacation home! Lake Margrethe is a hidden treasure!

  • 5 of 5

This lakefront property was fantastic! Our hosts were incredibly accommodating, and the home and location were everything we could have wanted. We brought a small sailboat with us and had many, many days of both exciting and easy sailing. Our grandchildren loved swimming and playing in the lake. This was one of the best and most relaxing vacations we have had in years.

Incredible Accomodations! Gorgeous Lake!

  • 5 of 5

This house is UNREAL! It was everything you want in a vacation home. It was clean, organized, spacious and completely stocked with general needs. The sunsets were AMAZING from the dock and the lake is absolutely gorgeous, clean, and clear. The check in and out process was very easy and the owner was very helpful. I can't wait to come back again and share this experience with others! I'm going to propose that we have our next work retreat here. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Great Vacation, Great Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week at this home. I say home because it was like staying at a home, not a cottage. Everything is new and nice. The home is completely stocked for all the things you would need for the week. The weather could have been better but a great week was had by all. The rental process was smooth and the owners were great in every way. We would definitely rent again. Thank you!

Beautiful house, beautiful lake

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time on Lake Margarethe despite not-so-perfect weather. The house was amazing. Everything is new, which is very nice to find in a rental home. The home was spacious and we spent a lot of time in the nicely appointed kitchen. There was an awesome restaurant grade waffle maker. We enjoyed the outdoor seating and the firepit in the evening. We felt like we were staying in someone's home rather than a rental property (i.e. it did not feel like renters were churning through).

Lake Margarethe is shallow for a long way out, which is nice for younger kids to wade and swim in. There is no beach at this property, but a nice beach at the state park across the lake. I would definitely recommend a boat rental if you don't own a boat (we rented a pontoon from Fun N Sun down the street, the price was decent and they were easy to work with. FYI we were planning to rent from Beach Watersports in Traverse City, don't rent from them!!! They refused to deliver the boat on the date we agreed. Near disaster!).

I had fun escaping the children in the morning for a quiet kayak paddle. It would be nice to have 2 kayaks or rent a 2nd. We saw and heard loons on the lake, which was really neat. It was also neat hearing the national guard bugle playing in the evenings (the machine gun noise, less neat). We also had fun exploring Grayling (the fish hatchery was interesting and not very expensive) and took a visit to Shorts Brewery (awesome food and beer!).

Downsides -- the entertainment system was very complicated and the surround sound did not seem calibrated. And it could have rained a few less days :-)

Great House... Owners, not so much.

  • 1 of 5

Let me start by saying, this house is amazing, and we had hoped to return for several years. That is not to be.

The owners not only were we told they would file an insurance claim against our stay, they also have kept our full deposit for "damages" that we dispute. We even offered a compromise and explanations of the so called damage, of which the owners had replied with only it's our word vs theirs.

Please, if you rent this house, get a detailed inventory of what is in the house, and make the owner stay until you inspect the entire thing. Or, you could save your self the trouble and rent a different house.

To start things off, the owner said he has a large group of family staying that weekend, and couldn't let us check in until 6. We agreed to that with the promise that we could stay a couple extra hours on our last day if we liked. We arrived at 6 pm, and the house wasn't ready. We didn't get in until 8, and the house was not what we call clean. There also was no Wii system nor cable in a couple bedrooms as promised.

As for the damages...

There was no trash service, nor anywhere to store the large amount of trash that builds up over a week. I asked the owner twice about this, and his offer was to pay to take the trash to the dump, or take it to the State park because "That's what I do". For the price we paid to rent the house, we shouldn't have to pay to dump trash. The owners accused us of spreading fish guts in the garage and leaving them to rot, which is 100% not true.

Secondly - They accused us of putting gouges in their brand new flooring and table. Of course, there were 20 people in the house days before we arrived, and the owners swears he inspected the entire house before we checked in, which we question because he was still cleaning the house 2 hours after our check in time.

Third - He accused us of cracking his brand new driveway. Our kids did hit the driveway with a hammer, and were instantly told to stop. There is very little chance that a couple three yr olds with a child sized hammer put hairline cracks in concrete.

Lastly - we were accused of stealing/breaking a few glasses, towels, a figurine, and a lamp. The glasses were in a different cabinet, and that the towels were in the dryer. As for the figurines and lamp, we offered a partial settlement for those because it is possible that with so many kinds an accident may have happened.

That's all vrbo will let me write. Good Luck.

Owner's Response: The guests were obviously upset that we refused to comply with their offer to refund their damage deposit on their terms. Our guest made the statement “refund our deposit or I will leave a negative review” We are still in the process of gathering information for the insurance claim for damages that occurred during this guests stay. The guest refuses to assist with information on how damages occurred during their stay. The damage occurred on several items in our home which he openly admitted that may have happened. We informed the guest that the damage deposit would be refunded as soon as the insurance claim was paid less any items that were not covered, less any additional charges incurred. We attempted to resolve this matter and supplied pictures to the guest clearly showing the damage. Regarding the late check in, this guest was informed prior to making his reservation that the house would not be available until at least 6pm which was mutually agreed to. Additionally we offered a late check-out to make up the difference in time. A portion of the time in question was due to an early arriving family member from their party that kept interfering with preparing the house including walking through and bringing items into the house. Regarding the trash, we attempted to address this problem with waste management the two 96 gallon bins ordered were not delivered timely so we purchased four 42 gallon trash cans which were in the garage upon their arrival and we mentioned that there was a township dump that could be used in an overflow situation as well as information. A simple phone call to us would have addressed this early in their stay; this guest had 19 42 gallon bags of trash / garbage and 4 bags of bottles / cans that had to be removed. No one ever accused anyone of stealing or breaking glasses or removing towels, we just asked where they were because we could not locate them. They were found in a different part of the house after the guest informed us where they were. We have had numerous guests throughout the summer; no one else has caused any damage to our home and our guest book is filled with nothing but positive comments. We will supply any and all correspondence with pictures of the damage sent to this guest upon request (names will not be included to protect privacy). We apologize to this guest for their lack of understanding the rental agreement and the remedy’s provided for damage caused.
