I am a transplanted Australian, by way of California, and chose the Tennessee mountains as a perfect place to semi-retire and enjoy the beauty of middle Tennessee.
The house reflects a combination of my Australian heritage and a little of the south and the name 'Moongalbah' is an Australian Aboriginal word meaning 'a sitting and resting place' and I invite you and your guests to use the front porch rockers and do just that... enjoy, relax and breathe the fresh mountain air.
Susan Herrick purchased this house in 2005
'Moongalbah' in Clifftops is a perfect retreat for guests attending events at the University of the South, whether it be key university weekends, weddings, reunions etc. This gated community allows privacy, and a perfect base to explore the Cumberland Plateau, hiking trails and so much more.
A safe and secure home in a gated community.
We could not have been more pleased.
Excellent accommodatiions in a beautiful setting surpassed only by the gracious hospitality and communication of our hostess Sue Herrick.
Many thanks again.
To borrow the question from John Kinsella (actor Dwier Brown) to his son, Ray Kinsella (actor Kevin Costner) at the conclusion of the baseball film, "Field of Dreams":
IS THIS HEAVEN?
Answer: Sue & Andy's home may not be Heaven -- but it's the closest thing we've ever seen to it!
Extraordinary hospitality and accommodations by Sue & Andy for 5 families, with almost enough sofa space for our daughter's sorority! As the saying goes, "Not a hair out of place!". Quiet, spacious home 10 minutes from Sewanee, tucked into the bucolic, Clifftops development (1.2 miles west of I-24), where families, students, et al, can enjoy the quiet and beautiful outdoors, entertain guests through leisurely cooking their own meals together, look up at the stars from the back deck, front & backyards, and then fall effortlessly into a deep, refreshing sleep where not a sound could heard (not even the bathrooms in the dead of night!).
As background, we wisely rented Sue & Andy's home 3 years in advance of our then-freshman daughter's senior year events, immediately after departing from her first "Sewanee Family Weekend." We did so with only reading their website and talking with Sue by phone, because we wanted to mimic another family's very special -- quiet but festive, Clifftops gathering, doing the same for our daughter and her classmates. We recognized the potential to offer a needed "refuge" for the students to "hang out" (more like nap on the deck!) and a very relaxing place for parents to get to know each other. IT WORKED.
The only thing we could not have have anticipated was how sincerely hospitable and inviting Sue & Andy would be. Wow. Their thoughtfulness alone makes them a "5 Star" hotel. The 4 families who stayed with us were elated, just as we were, at their and their college daughters' experience at Moongalbah, including a joint, "home-cooked dinner" with 40 others. Some of the students even napped on the soft chairs on the deck and on the sofas during the afternoon.
When you stay at Sue & Andy's Moongalbah (Aboriginal for "resting place"), there is one sure guarantee: There is utterly NO CHANCE you will be sorry for staying there.
Sue had every comfort we could have asked for including a well equipped kitchen and dish tv so we didn't miss the Badger game! This home even had 2 master suites and all the beds were comfy; we had our family there for our sons wedding and I highly recommend if you want a perfect stay in Sewanee!!!
Five high school friends and I rented this GREAT house for a reunion weekend. The house was lovely, quiet, and had everything we needed. The owner, Sue Herrick, was very helpful and accommodating.
We stayed at Moongalbah for Thanksgiving week and it was wonderful. It is a charming house and the setting is superb. The kitchen and breakfast room have a beautiful view of the woods where deer browsed each morning. the house had lots of space: two living rooms and plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms. The kitchen was very well equipped. We had everything we could possibly have needed and more to serve Thanksgiving dinner for 18.
