Many adventures await you including: whale watching, hiking gorgeous mountain or shoreline trails, biking or strolling along 57 miles of carriage roads, kayaking, sailing, golfing, fishing, attending a ranger-led park program, driving the scenic Park Loop Road, taking a ferry to an outlying island for the day, and more! In the early morning or evening you will very likely encounter a few deer along the way as you stroll by acres of pines and small picturesque ponds filled with chirping frogs.

We moved here from California to work in Acadia National Park as Park Naturalists. During our second winter, actually the next seven, we built our house. I had been a carpenter during college in California and ultimately ended up leaving the Park Service to become a boat builder, which I did for the next 20 years. My wife is a school teacher in a small town on the island. Our two daughters have grown up here; one is in college and the other is getting ready to graduate from high school. Mt. Desert Island is a great vacation getaway, but also an amazing place to live and raise a family. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have!
Jerry Heist purchased this house in 1989
A house with everything you need: great kitchen, nice porch, grill, great sense of peace and there is internet. And there is no cable - so you're not even tempted to watch TV.
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at this lovely two-story cottage. It was the perfect place to relax before and after enjoying the activities and events of the Island. It had all the necessary amenities for cooking and sleeping. Note: One bedroom had magazine images all over the walls. Bit funky, but certainly started our vacation on a humorous note.
We enjoyed sitting on the front deck while grilling However, we especially enjoyed the two small decks off the back where we had our morning coffee and happy hours. Often we were treated to seeing deer in the mornings.
The location was fantastic. We loved the west side of the island. It is much quieter and easier to navigate. We enjoyed being near Echo Lake and Southwest Harbor, yet Bar Harbor was an easy drive away.
Here are some of our activity highlights.
• Hiked on Acadia Mt. trail (Breathtaking views of the Somme Sound and the island)
• Hiked on Great Head trail (Great coastal views and access to Sand Beach)
• Viewied the sunrise from Cadillac Mt.
• Went on an Atlantic Brewery tour and tasting
• Kayaked the harbor
• Biked on the Carriage Roads
• Viewed the lighthouse and tidal pools at Bass Harbor
• Walked to Bar Island during low tide
• Sailed the harbor via a Schooner (Tip: Pick the sister schooner to the Margaret Todd. It is much smaller and more intimate.)
Here are some of our dinner highlights.
• Thurston’s Lobster Pound (Bernard, ME)-lobstah mania
• SIPs (Southwest Harbor)-great breakfast
• Café 2 (Southwest Harbor)-delicious seafood pasta dishes
Larry was responsive when we had questions or asked for recommendations. We loved this place and its location!
This was our first trip to Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park and this house was in a great location. We could get to any location on the island in no more than 30 minutes and it was really nice to be able to come back at night to a peaceful location to relax. I loved sitting at the table in the breakfast nook in the morning planning our day and watching the occasional deer wander through the backyard. Jerry and Kim were extremely responsive and made our trip a memorable one with some great suggestions for activities or trips that our family could do.
We loved our stay at this spacious, pretty, and comfortable home. We also really enjoyed being on the quiet side of the island. Would highly recommend to anyone planning a vacation to Acadia National Park.
It was a sad morning on check-out day. We'd had such a wonderful week staying in this house that we didn't want to leave. We especially liked being on this side of Mount Desert Island, away from the crowds in Bar Harbor. The house is very secluded which meant we didn't hear ANY traffic while we were inside, and while outside it was rare to hear a vehicle drive by. And yet, when we needed a grocery item it was less than a 10 minute drive to a small grocery, and Southwest Harbor was just a few minutes farther down the road for a great breakfast at Sip's.
The kitchen was well supplied with everything we needed. We opted to cook the vast majority of our meals, so we gave the kitchen a good workout. I was thrilled to discover SHARP knives, which I have found isn't usually the case in a rental. We even baked a cake one day.
There was plenty of space to spread out in the house. The three bedrooms were just what we needed. The half-bath on the main floor was nice. After all the hiking we did, it was nice to only have to scale the staircase once at bed-time.
Jerry and Kim were very responsive to our questions. Pre-trip I had communicated with Jerry about recommended hikes, bike rentals, kayaking, and restaurants. Having true "locals" as a resource is what made our trip such a success. There wasn't anything that we did which Jerry/Kim had recommended that we didn't enjoy. There is so much to do on MDI that one week really isn't enough. I can't wait to return.
We expected our vacation in Acadia to be wonderful but it exceeded all our expectations. We were very lucky that this house was available at the time we needed it. This beautiful house is located on the “Quiet Side”, less crowded side of the island with Echo Lake just across the road, Acadia Mountain trailhead within walking distance, village of Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor Lighthouse - just several minutes away by car. To say that the house is wonderful – is to say nothing! It is absolutely gorgeous and very spacious. Kitchen is equipped with everything you might think of, beds are very comfortable, gas grill on the deck is very useful, the lot is far from the road and very quiet, and best of all – the house is beautifully decorated with great taste. The owners were very nice and left a lot of maps and brochures about the Acadia National Park. Nice bonus – bookshelves filled with great library. We instantly fell in love with this place and are planning to come back soon! I would highly recommend this house to everybody who wants to explore Acadia and have a great vacation.
