Exceptional 3700sf Brownstone (sleeps 8-14) located in a Chicago's charming Lincoln Park historical neighborhood.

We’ve previously rented vacation homes in Wisconsin and Nantucket for use by our family and friends and we were disappointed with the availability of large rental homes close to downtown Chicago - although there are plenty of Condos. So, we recently acquired this historic home, which features various sleeping configurations for large multi-generational families on multiple floors, recently updated kitchen and baths, a lower level suite perfect for seniors or an au pair/nanny, 1-car indoor attached garage for parking, nearby parks, shopping and restaurants galore. Similar to our Boston Brownstone available at VRBO Listing #383697, this is a perfect residence for a large multi-generational family's vacation in Chicago, a wedding party's out-of-state relatives, a ladies shopping trip to Magnificent Mile, an executive's temporary assignment to Chicago, an executive attending a Master's Program at Loyola, Trade Show attendees/exhibitors, Chicago marathon runners, a Chef attending Le Cordon Bleu College or an actor during a role in a Chicago Broadway play or musical or in a Chicago filming.

Located at 2000 North Orleans, the residence is located only a short 1-block stroll east to Chicago's historic Lincoln Park (home of the Lincoln Park Zoo and from mid-May a Farmer's Market every Wednesday and Saturday during through Fall) and is about a mile from the famed-North End of Chicago's Magnificent Mile of Michigan Avenue shopping and restaurants.

Nearyby Restaurants include Home of Wrigley Field's StanBurger, Stanley's Bar & Grill, an Original House of Pancakes for a big breakfast, famous for its BBQ Baby Back Ribs is Twin Anchors, but nearby Four Farthings has awesome ribs as well as wonderfully large portions of Italian fare, Trattoria Ricardo's has great Italian as well, on Halsted is Rustic House (a well-kept secret) and Summer House both serving great American fare. Street Level (Level 1) – (sleeps 6) Entry from 1-car garage off of Orleans Street. Or, enter from the front courtyard lower level entrance directly through the entrance is a Bedroom (King Bed & Sofa Sleeper) perfect for Seniors, Au Pair or Nanny, which has its own Full Bathroom. The Lower Level also includes another ensuite Full Bathroom and Bedroom (two TWIN beds which can be configured as a KING bed upon request). Each lower level bedroom has interior stairs to the next level up and between the two bedrooms is a hallway table with coffee maker and microwave.

Parlor Level (Level 2) - (sleeps 0-2) – Climb the front courtyard stairs to the Main Living Area including Living Room (with Queen Sofa Sleeper), Dining Room (Seats 10), Full Bathroom, and Kitchen and a Deck overlooking the tree terraced Orleans Street (with BBQ).

Third Floor (Level 3) - (sleeps 4-6) – Master Bedroom (King) with ensuite walk-in shower for two, and a Guest Bedroom (King) with ensuite Full Bathroom. Plus, there is a bonus library room with two Day Beds for extra sleeping requirements or simply an area to sit and converse.

Top Floor (Level 4) - small room with desk & printer with an access door to Roof Top Deck - enjoy the sun and views South to the panoramic City of Chicago skyline. If you stand on your tippy toes, you might see Lake Michigan to the East... Plus, it has patio furniture, BBQ & Fridge.

With my parents, sisters, spouses, nieces and nephews and the three of us (my wife and I and our son John), there are 14 of us total. We were unable to find a large short-term rental home in a convenient Chicago area that could sleep all of us comfortably, so we acquired this perfect property furnished it to do just that - just awaiting our City of Chicago vacation rental license.

Excellent place to stay

We booked this house for our 60th wedding anniversary. There were 11 in our family that had assembled here from several different parts of the country. Our family group has been renting houses around the country for about 15 years and this was the best so far. We were all pleased.

Although the house is quite old it is in excellent condition and is in an exceptionally good location. It is walking distance to numerous restaurants, grocery stores, a drugstore, the Lincoln Park Zoo and the beach. The furnishings and kitchen appliances were excellent.

Two drawbacks are the steep stairs and lack of parking for a second car. Unfortunately the nearest parking garage is now closed, although there are other parking garages within walking distance. We would stay here again, however.

Phenomenal property in Lincoln Park! Ten high school friends met to celebrate our 70th birthdays. Wonderful space to gather! Loved the patio in the front and the awesome roof top area especially at night! Limited parking. Near-by restaurants great, especially Ricardo's!

This property is beautiful, perfect location and maintained so well!

I was lucky enough to stay at this beautiful brownstone recently for a business leadership retreat. I can not say enough positive things, not only about the property but the owner Tim Hyland! Tim was so gracious in answering every question and assisting in making this the perfect retreat, even checking in on us (via email) while we were there to make sure all was going well. All of the additional information he provided on the area was instrumental in a successful getaway. The brownstone exceeded all of our expectations, it was luxury accommodations and far more comfortable than a hotel. The bedrooms on the first floor then large living space on the second floor and additional bedrooms on the third made it a perfect setting for 5 coworkers to coexist with plenty of space to be on your own and work together. The kitchen and dining area were so inviting and the outdoor space was so private and comfortable, you really don't want to dine elsewhere :). I was shocked at how quiet it was in the house, with all there was right around the area and major streets so close by, you really never heard any city noise in the house. The best way to sum it up was when one in our group said at the end of every business trip, we are ready to pack it up and head home yet this is a place you just don't want it to end... never want leave!! I want to thank Tim for being so helpful and offering an incredible home for others to enjoy!! We all look forward to returning, possibly on business and definitely for leisure!!

Good, but a few unexpected inconveniences

For over $1000 per night I would have expected more.

This very old home has been updated very well, especially the kitchen and bathrooms. My interior designer wife loved it. She is more into looks, I'm more into functionality.

Be prepared for lots of steps. Bedrooms up or down from main floor living area (Kitchen, Dining Room, Living Room, Bath); stairs to get up to the main level from street entrance. HVAC systems are very loud and hard to understand/control. A thermostat controls the A/C upstairs and the Heat downstairs, and vice versa. The HVAC control for the entire 3rd floor is in one of the 3rd floor bedrooms. If you are in the other bedroom, you better hope those in the control bedroom like the temp the same as you.

The "garage" is so small, nothing larger than a small SUV (i.e. Ford Escape) will fit. And because of the terrible on-street parking situation, getting IN or OUT of the "garage" is problematic, no matter how small your vehicle is.

There is a public parking garage about a block away, at $20 per day. If you don't plan on using your vehicle daily, I suggest you park there on floors 2 or above. They don't check vehicles daily. I was able to park there for two days for the price of one. The parking garage is disgustingly dirty, but there is not much other option. Finding a spot on the the street is tougher than winning the lottery.

The remote control for the TV in the living room is a NIGHTMARE. I have never seen or experienced a more difficult or confusing remote EVER. When teenagers can't figure it out, what hope does their 60 something grandpa have?

Being inconvenienced by numerous repair guys during our visit was not part of what we paid for. It took one of the repair guys to give the "hint" to the owner that the repairs could wait until after we were gone, vs. continued inconvenience to us.

Location is great, in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. Within walking distance to drug store, restaurants, small grocery store, and just about anything else you could need. One block walk to bus stop that takes you to the front door of Wrigley Field. A few blocks walk to the free Lincoln Park Zoo and other amenities at Lincoln Park.

As long as you are OK with putting up with the mega stairs, squeaky steps and doors, loud and cumbersome HVAC systems, severe parking hassles, a near unusable living room TV remote, a disgusting BBQ grill, and possible repair techs invading your privacy, this is the place for you.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, my wife and I stayed in our vacation home for two nights prior to this Guests arrival and we discovered a few things that needed attention. We left the Guest a detailed note explaining the situation and apologizing for any inconvenience. The Home Entertainment System had been altered by a prior guest and was not functioning properly. We scheduled a repair, but it was unable to be made until after this Guest's stay. During our 2014 renovation, we replaced all HVAC units and added a small mini-split to the 4th floor, which needed a repair under warranty. The service technician apologized for making a repair attempt, but needed to return. We agreed to schedule that return after this Guest departed so as not to disrupt their vacation again. In any event, this home was constructed in 1876 and has a few creaky stairs and other issues of an older home despite the full renovation in 2014. As you can see from the other 5-star reviews, we hold our standards high and we pride ourselves in our perfection to detail. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we didn't satisfy this Guest sufficiently to earn a 5-star rating.

Gorgeous property in a great location!

We had ten girls stay here this past weekend and it was wonderful! The home has such great charm and the patio was adorable. We found the home fully furnished and the kitchen fully stocked! The beds and pillows were more comfortable than our beds at home. The girls were so impressed. Also the five bathrooms (all of which have showers) were excellent for us to get ready! We would definitely stay here again and now we are very interested in the Boston property that Tim has available!

Let me share with you what we stock in our home: Bathrooms: Toilet Paper, Kleenix, Hand Soap, Make-up Removers, Make-up Mirrors, Hair Dryers and in each shower there is a bulk dispenser of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel. Plus, for each guest there is a towel, hand towel and wash cloth. Kitchen: We stock sugar and sugar substitutes, salt & pepper and a spice rack, plus dishwasher soap along with all dishes, silverware, glassware and cookware. In the laundry room, we stock Tide laundry detergent and Bounce sheets. There is an ice maker in the freezer. Sheets and blankets are on the two sofa sleepers and in the library armoire for the two day beds, but the six pillows are stored in the mirrored closet in the lower level guest suite. The beds all have clean linens and pillow cases, etc. In the living room, there are various board games, cards, chess and checkers, books, and Chicago Magazines. On the top floor landing there is a small desk and a printer. Enjoy!
