Cozy Cottage for 6, Just Minutes from Lake Michigan, Wineries, Farms, Food

Looking for a weekly summer rental close to all the beauty Leelanau County has to offer?

Come visit our quaint cottage right in the heart of Leelanau County, situated on a 135-acre farm. We're just 1 1/2 miles from the shores of Lake Leelanau and 3 miles from the Big Water at Good Harbor Beach. The village of Lake Leelanau is 6 miles North, Leland and Fishtown are 8 miles away, and Traverse City is an easy, 25 minute drive.

The cottage sleeps 6 comfortably, with one king sized bed in the loft bedroom and two full sleepers, one in the bedroom and one in the living room. The kitchen is huge, with a large dining table, island and a bar for entertaining. You'll find the best local coffee and tea in the cupboard. There is a full spice rack and all of the basic kitchen staples so that if you'd rather eat (or bake) in rather than eat out, you'll feel right at home.

The living room is comfortable, with several couches and a cozy table that serves as both a breakfast nook and a card table at night. There's a DVD library, wifi and television to suit all interests.

All linens and towels are included. Basic toiletries will be provided, including extra toothbrushes and toothpaste. There is a full sized washer and dryer in the bathroom for guests to use as often as they'd like.

In the summer months, we rent for week-long stays only. Our weeks run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in on Saturday afternoons at 4 p.m. and checkout is on the following Saturday at 11 a.m.

Need room for a larger group? See our other listing, which is a cottage that sleeps an additional 6 people. (Other cottage not included in the price.)

Please feel free to call or text Melissa for more information and to book your vacation today.

About Melissa Kelenske

I'm a Leelanau County native and I live here year round with my husband and our two darling daughters. I own a yarn shop in nearby town of Cedar, so I spend my days with our baby and yarn....pretty much perfect! My husband is an elementary school teacher for Leland Public Schools and farms (milks cows, raises sweet corn and pigs) on the side. We hope you enjoy our little spot in the world as much as we do.

Melissa Kelenske purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Melissa Kelenske chose Sleeping Bear Dunes

This is the historic farm that once belonged to my husband's grandfather. My father-in-law grew up here. We love the new spin we've put on an old home and the life we've breathed into it with a lot of hard work, time and patience. We hope you'll fall in love with it, just as we have.

What makes this cottage unique

Not everyone in the world has the opportunity to live on a farm. The gas pump (stuck at 36 cents per gallon!) and the steel windmill, as well as the hay barn and the pig barn, all harken back to simpler times. The inside of the cottages are a blend of new world and old. We've left the original grain mill inside the primary cottage, which was a granary in its previous life. On the old wood are notes my husband's grandpa wrote to himself almost 80 years ago. The kitchen and bathroom are brand new, with all the typical modern conveniences, but seamlessly blend with the traditional style.

Beautiful, Charming and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

I hesitate to give this such a great review, because I want to keep this place all to myself! The farm house is absolutely charming, and placed in a pastoral, peaceful setting of rolling hills and farms. You're really close to all of the busy excitement of tourist towns, beaches, and restaurants, but get the bonus of coming home to beauty and peace and quiet. The pigs are adorable, if a bit smelly, at times, but it's all part of the charm! Melissa was extremely friendly and helpful when I needed it. Would rent this place again, for sure! ~ MSB

Nice looking place but not a good experience for our family.

  • 1 of 5

Although the cottage is a very nice looking home, we did not have a good experience during our stay. We rented this cottage for New Years Eve weekend. The first night we started to see many lady bugs on the kitchen walls. The second night we killed about a dozen flies that were in the bedroom loft. In the middle of the second night, we noticed different black bugs that were coming out that were long like a beetle with antenna. Our vacation was cut short at that point. We were supposed to stay 3 nights but left after the second night due to the continuous killing of these different bugs. I was surprised there were so many given it was the middle of winter. We could find no fly swatter to kill the bugs. There was also no paper towel, or napkins that we could find anywhere in the house. We advised the property owners that we would be cutting the trip short due to the bugs. We did not ask for money to be returned and we were not offered any. We did get an apology. The owner can also be very hard to get a hold of. When booking the property, time ran out on my first request to book due to no response from the owner, so I had to go through the process again. I also had a hard time getting the deposit refunded. When I reached out to the owner a week after the trip (6th), to inquire on the deposit, I was advised it would be put in the mail the following Monday (9th). A week later, I had still not received the check. I reached out to the owner again, and did not get a response. A couple of days later (17th), I sent a text and still got no response. At that point I did take out a complaint with Homeaway.com. The next day I received a response from the owner with an apology and a photo copy of the check that they were going to mail out. I did receive the check a few days later (20th). Although I would expect a few bugs in a farmhouse probably in spring/summer, etc, I would not expect the amount of bugs that were in the house at this time of year. We take a northern Michigan ski trip like this every year for New Years, to relax and unwind with our 2 kids. It was very diappointing to spend this kind of money and most of the time in the house was spent killing bugs, which was not at all relaxing. Luckily we were able to get a day of sking in which was enjoyable and took our mind off of it.

Owner's Response: We were so sorry to hear that our guest did not have a pleasant stay at our cottage for the holiday weekend. We were not notified of a single issue until the guests had packed up and had decided to cut their stay short. The reason our cottage is labelled as a farmhouse (and described within the listing as such) is because it is. It's an extremely neat and tidy one, but occasionally there are flies and bugs--we're in the middle of the country and one of the things that our guests like most is the quiet and proximity to nature. As far as the communication is concerned, we were experiencing extreme sickness, as well as the fact we had a newborn in the house. Our communication was perhaps not immediate, but we did maintain same-day communication. I do apologize for the delay in returning the deposit--again, with a tiny baby and another sick toddler, I had more on my plate than was fair to the guest. We very much love having guests and we would have done everything in our power to accommodate this guest during their stay if they had simply communicated with us. We're sorry they had to cut their vacation short, and would have been happy to address any issues while they were staying at the cottage.

Lovely home- charming, clean, and comfortable.

The house sits in an idyllic area. The inside of the historic structures is totally remodeled with modern fixtures and an open concept kitchen.

We spent our babymoon here and it was perfect.

Perfect kickoff to our honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had an incredible couple of nights staying here! So relaxing, quiet, and beautiful piece of property. Don't get me started on the house itself - it is so perfectly decorated, simple, with just the items you need when staying away from home. This was the perfect location between so many great cities, which allowed us to easily explore the Leelanau Peninsula during our stay. Thank you!!! We will certainly return.

Country Bliss

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful time in the old farmhouse. It is charming!

And the locale is so beautiful and peaceful, we were thrilled. We loved our

neighbors the five pigs and they didn't smell...I promise. This was a very

special experience. Thank you Melissa and Curt!

Perfect Place

This home was exactly what we were looking for. Rustic charm but with updated conveniences. The location was ideal for us, central to Traverse City, Leland and Sleeping Bear. You won't be disappointed with this home! Eric

We are located in the heart of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, voted in 2011 as 'The Most Beautiful Place in America'. Our cottages are located on a 135-acre farm, just a 1 1/2 miles from Lake Leelanau and 3 miles from Lake Michigan. This is the perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts, foodies and shoppers alike; there's really no other place in the world like it! Whether you want to hike, bike, swim, taste wine, buy some of the region's freshest, locally grown produce or catch a breathtaking sunset, Leelanau County is for you! Take a day trip to Fishtown, a historic fishing village in Leland. Rent a few kayaks and paddle the Crystal River--or even Lake Michigan. There's a marina nearby to rent a fishing boat or even la pontoon for a group. Schedule a Lake Michigan sunset cruise on the Mishe Mokwa, a ferry that takes you along the shoreline for drinks and serenity. Take a wine tour to sample award-winning wines--no trip is complete without a stop at 45 North or L. Mawby for sparkling wines! (Try Tandem Ciders for a fabulous collection of hard ciders.)
