Maile's cottage blew us away! We prefer quiet, remote spots, and this has become our favorite. The cottage is quaint, welcoming, clean, and very comfortable. The deck has spectacular views. We had some memorable meals out there, with the great ambiance Maile has created with thoughtfully placed lighting and furniture. The cottage was very well equipped with everything we needed. The semi-outdoor shower is great, and the bed is soooo comfortable, we had our coffee and morning reading in bed. Maile was very attentive and quick to respond when we had questions. Her goal truly is to make her guests feel right at home and provide a memorable experience. Her beautiful family was a joy to meet! They afforded is total privacy but were available whenever needed. We can't say enough about this place. We hope to be back.
If quiet and rustic is your style Maile's cottage is your happy place. Hosts were fantastic. We really did not see them much. We stayed 5 nights and explored the North end of the Island all the way to Hilo from here. Loved being away from the congestion that is the Kailua Kona area. The view down the coast from the lanai is beautiful. Seeing the horses on the driveway in and out was nice, too. The altitude makes it quite a bit cooler than down below, but except for the high winds of the final day, we were completely comfortable even when using the outdoor shower. The place itself is cozy and serene. Cottage was well stocked with necessary toiletries and kitchen essentials for those traveling light. Do yourself a kindness and stay more than one night.
We stayed at the cottage for two nights in early January of 2017. We loved the cottage from the moment we arrived. The large lanai provides plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy the view of the Kohala Coast. Inside, the cottage is perfect for a couple who like coziness and a quaint experience. It is well lit, with a comfortable bed and a small kitchen. It is fine for making breakfast and lunch and simple dinners but it's probably wise not to plan a complicated dinner due to limited counter space. We found it romantic, private, secluded yet also convenient. The Kohala Mountain Road is a spectacular sight-seeing road, though its best to let the driver concentrate on the curves. We loved doing the short drive down to Waimea to get groceries and supplies. Maile is a well organized property owner who left good directions and provided plenty of information on the area. We felt welcome and she respected our privacy. We had a nice chat with her son about some of the local ecology and efforts to restore the old dry land forest that once existed in the area prior to the rise of the ranching industry. We would highly recommend this cottage for couples who enjoy adventure, romance and are not expecting a VRBO to be a hotel. It was a terrific stay.
Very nice and quiet place to stay. Enjoyed the view - even the moon rising! You need to be ready for it to be cooler than elsewhere on the island but it was delightful and we used guest quarters as a base to explore northern side of island and to enjoy several of the beaches nearby. Would readily recommend to others.
This is a beautiful little place with a superb view and almost everything that you will need for a short stay. We had one issue with the house that was dealt with promptly and professionally, and all the members of the family who we met were all super friendly without being too over the top. My only other comment was that the internet was very slow and only really worked out on the lanai. Still, not the end of the world but if you need a connection then you might want to organise something else instead of relying on what is available at the cottage.
Maile and Jason's hospitality and this cottage made for nothing short of a perfect weekend getaway from Kona and Hilo. My friend and I stayed here for one night; our only regret is not staying longer! It was so difficult to leave!
The kitchen is well-equipped to make whatever you'd like. The studio apartment made us feel we had found a second home. The air is clean. There are views of fields all the way down to the ocean and the stargazing from the porch was incredible.
If you're coming to the Big Island and want to explore the northern region, stay here! You won't regret it. I'm sure we'll be staying there again soon!
Mahalo Maile and Jason!
As others have described, this cottage is for those who are looking for a laid back and unassuming true Kohala Mauka experience. The views are tremendous and the hospitality is second to none. Love the ability to feel right at home and explore on your own terms. Gets cool at night and will feel the trade winds blow at times but no better way to experience the Island of Hawaii. Mahalo Maile and Jason for the epic time.
