Studio aparment is a special occasion destination for couples of all ages

Vitalia boasts 600+ feet of luxury living space and includes a king size bed, full bath, full kitchen and living area with wireless internet, cable tv, DVD, hardwood floors, washer/dryer, free parking and access to outdoor lounge area in formal garden. The space has windows on all four walls, bringing the best of the outside inside. Downtown is a five minute walk and within a short drive to all kinds of outdoor activities.

The apartment overlooks a patio garden on a landmark piece of property in Traverse City, The Cigar Box Company, built in 1920. Owners live and work in building across the courtyard.

About Victoria & Matt Sutherland

We completed our three year odyssey in 2014 and which involved remodeling an historic building, The Cigar Box Factory in Traverse City. Built in 1920, cigar boxes were made and packed here until the early 1940s using the local cedar trees. Since then, it has been a telephone company, furniture store and fitness/physical therapy center. Now it houses our business, Foreword Reviews magazine, on the third floor, and our loft residence on the courtyard level. In 2013, we finished the interior renovations and started on a garage/apartment to balance the garden/courtyard. We are pleased to be able to provide luxury lodging downtown in a part of Traverse City's history. We travel extensively around the world for business and understand what it is like to have a place to land that is rich in creature comforts, close to everything, yet far enough away to enjoy peaceful retreat. Chefs at most of the local restaurants are friends of ours, we can direct you accordingly.

We were initially looking for real estate to house our business, but when we walked into The BOX we understood immediately the possibilities for creating a home and unique space for our business. We were pleased to be able to rip out a parking lot and add a garage/apartment to 'finish' improving this particular corner of Traverse City.

The weekend at The Box could not have been more relaxing and pleasant. The accommodations and amenities were thoughtful and complimented every aspect of our stay. Thank you Victoria for the easy check in and access. We also appreciated the suggestions on restaurants and wineries. We will be back soon!!

Amazing experience. Wonderful hosts. Perfect location.

Matt and Victoria were absolutely wonderful hosts for our stay in Traverse City over Valentines weekend. Their condo is absolutely perfect. They provided a bottle of local sparkling wine, which honestly is just the cherry on top of an already perfect experience.

The location is PERFECT. We were able to walk right downtown (yes, even in the cold and the snow) and had easy access to restaurants and coffee shops. The accommodations were above and beyond. We are still trying to find those towels so we can buy some for ourselves ;) There's a king size bed that we wanted to take home with us. While a lot of vacation rentals provide generic amenities, Matt and Victoria truly honor their guests by giving them the best.

Matt even cleaned the snow off my car on Saturday morning!

We would absolutely stay here again, and cannot wait to visit Traverse City again in the future.

Modern Loft in the Heart of Traverse City

The Box is a memorable location that will leave you feeling refreshed and energized. The modern decor coupled with the cleanliness of the space will definitely have my fiance and I back for a follow up stay. With access to all that Traverse City has to offer along with all the great hiking that the Sleeping Bear Dunes is known for, you can get up early for an amazing day hike followed by chilling out at a local spot like "Low Bar". We received a lot of great recommendations from the owners and have only good things to say about our stay.

A New Year's Weekend to Remember

Great accomodations in a perfect location. Shopping and some of the best of Michigan restaurants within easy walking distance. Apartment was modern, clean and the perfect place for a much needed break from an otherwise hectic lifestyle in the burbs outside Detroit. Will definitely be back.

Great apartment! Great Location! Great People!

The apartment is in a great location and we walked to everything downtown. There are lots of great restaurants and we went to Ami, Fire Fly, and Remedy. All were very good. We never got a chance to use the patio, but would love to next time we get a chance to stay.

The hosts were great and very informative. The apartment was clean and very comfortable and we loved our stay.

bright, airy, modern, urban chic but a few negatives

Stayed here for 4 nights with my wife during the fall. Very modern, open, comfortable, professionally designed/furnished and attractive apartment over a 2.5 car garage with lots of natural light. Great location near downtown Traverse City and within walking distance of restaurants and lots of stuff. Also have access to a pretty walled in courtyard and grill which is great on nice days for entertaining. Washer and dryer in the apartment was also convenient. They also have bikes you can use. Owner's 2 story business and residence is in a separate building in front of apartment. Owners have a book review magazine and there are lots of eclectic books in the apartment if you like to read. Owners were out of town but seem like nice people as they checked in to make sure we were ok and if we needed anything. Reason we cannot give it a higher rating is that there are a few big negatives from our perspecitve which override the positives. Some people may not be bothered but these are the negatives to us and had we known them we would have rented somewhere else:

1) lots of windows which add to the openness and sense of space but many don't have window coverings so it is like living in a fishbowl - people can see in from the street; worse so at night. As you are on vacation it is difficult to sleep-in late in the morning due to sunlight streaming in and no way to block it.

2) there is a bell tower close by that chimes on the hour and the half hour - you will hear it

3) full size kitchen which we used but there is no microwave which would have been handy (a lesser nuisance is that there is no dishwasher)

4) there is no air conditioning which may not seem like an issue for most of the year in Traverse City but it was a bit warm during the day when we were there

5) there is lots of road noise from traffic as you are right on the corner of two busy streets; you will still hear some of the road noise with the windows up; you will definitely hear it at night if you like to sleep with the windows down

6) owner provides a few perks in the fridge which are listed on the website including a nice bottle of sparking wine from a local winery; unusual from most consumer's perspective is that they also leave an open, used jar of jam, a half used stick of butter and an opened carton of creamer which had been used by someone else.

7) They do not refresh/restock the room unless you stay 5 nights or more.

Owner's Response: I'm very sorry we weren't there to personally greet you. The reason we text within 24 hours is to make sure your satisfaction levels are high, and if you needed anything, we could address. Our caretaker would have been happy to bring you the portable air conditioner, which sets up in seconds and cools things off within minutes. With regard to traffic and other city noises, the apartment is noted as "urban", and that is perhaps what you should expect when you book something "downtown." There is a large window over the stairwell and in front of the kitchen sink and a high counter that does not have window coverings. It faces the west and in the apartment design we opted for sunshine, views of the beautiful Boardman River, and lots of day light. Passerby from the sidewalk across the avenue can only look up and see the shoulder level and head, if you are standing at the kitchen sink. The luxury towels we provide are usually adequate for two persons staying four nights, but again, had you requested more, we would have happily changed your sheets and given you four new towels. Absolutely agree with you about the local jam and butter, a mistake of our cleaning lady...something that was overlooked.

We are one of the few self-catering, private accommodations downtown. The BOX, and the apartment over garage called Vitalia, are part of an historic landmark property and we've used our own extensive travel experiences to make this a relaxing escape with luxury fittings.

We run a business and live in the building across the courtyard, but respect our guest's privacy.

We are the edge of the historic Boardman Neighborhood. Front Street shopping, beaches and excellent restaurants, yoga studio, coffee shops, running and biking trails, movie theatre and Open Space where many festivals are hosted just minutes walk away. We also have a great natural food store to stock your pantry nearby.

Bus stops are just a block away if you have to venture further, but with this location, location, location, walking is the ticket once you park your car.

The Boardman River, which runs into Grand Traverse Bay, is accessible across the street if you would like to bring your water accessories: kayaks, canoes, SUPs, fishing rods.

The property is located on the corner of Eighth St. and Boardman Avenue, just five minutes walk from the heart of downtown and overlooking the Boardman River. Guests are invited to relax in a formal garden at The BOX, or stay inside during a rainy afternoon napping, reading or watching a movie. There is a full kitchen to exercise the foodie in you, with access to nearby natural foods market nearby and farmers market May-October.
