Overview

Brooklyn Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Two room ground floor apt in a 120 yr old townhouse has charm to spare

Welcome to Red Hook!

THE SPACE

The apartment is entirely private and you will have it all to yourselves. It occupies the whole ground floor of our house with its own entrance.

Hardwood floors, exposed brick, and minutes from great restaurants and shops.

There is a queen size bed in the main room in the rear. The sofa bed in the front (street) TV room pulls out to a queen bed. The two rooms are separated be a door. The entrance is through the TV room right off the street. The apartment sleeps four.

Everything is a little crooked and funky in this turn-of-the-century house, which is part of the charm. You'll have a large, well stocked kitchen for shopping at Fairway Market down the street, with a dishwasher and microwave.

There is a pleasing mix of brand new contemporary and antique/salvaged furniture. Cable TV and wireless internet are provided with the room price

There is also a large garden in the back, with a huge two story tree house for kids, although we built it adult sized so you can hang out on the top level during summer nights and enjoy a drink. You can even sleep out there!

Our home is located at the northern end of main street Van Brunt, the 'residustrial' stretch. The block is entirely residential on our side of the street and is surrounded by a manufacturing/commercial district with businesses as varied as import/export companies, glass shops and a the best coffee roaster in Brooklyn. One block south of us is where the 'residential' stretch begins and you'll find all the great bars, restaurants and shopping.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation in Red Hook is provided by the B61 bus (stop across the street from our house) which takes you to all major subway lines in 10-15 minutes.

It's also a pleasant 20 walk through scenic Carroll Gardens to the F and G trains.

The IKEA nearby on the waterfront also provides a ferry service to lower Manhattan.

Car services are inexpensive and plentiful, and provide an economic way to get around.

We also provide two mountain bikes free to use on the Brooklyn Greenway bike path that runs through the neighborhood.

The wildly popular Citi Bike bike share program has bikes at dozens of stations in downtown Brooklyn for treks into the City across the Brooklyn Bridge where you can drop them off at any of a couple hundred locations and jump on the subway.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Red Hook is a vibrant, ever-changing neighborhood that has the quiet, small town quality of fishing village. We are surrounded on three sides by water which give the area a unique and beautiful light.

This area is populated with many artists and craftspeople, with several art galleries. There are many top notch restaurants that are some of the best in Brooklyn. Red Hook has become a foodie paradise! There are also some great, funky bars including Bait and Tackle, and the legendary Sunny's, not to be missed.

Fairway Market, eight blocks away, is one of the best supermarkets in the City, with local and rare products, excellent produce, and even dry aged meat, as well as a cafe with stupendous views of New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty.

There are several piers which are excellent for sunset viewing or watching weekly movies on an outdoor screen.

We are primarily a neighborhood with an industrial and maritime past, and there are many old buildings and warehouses that date to the Civil War, making it a fun and educational place to explore on foot.

The neighborhood is very safe, even late at night. Because it is lightly populated, the streets can sometimes seems empty, but that's part of what draws people here - the quiet character. In over 10 years here we have never had any sort of problem, nor have our neighbors, and there are many kids in the neighborhood.

During the Revolutionary War, the 'Battle of Brooklyn' was fought at Fort Defiance on the waterfront, and later Al Capone was born here and roamed the streets before moving to Chicago to start his infamous career.

GUEST ACCESS

Backyard garden and tree house, cable TV and wireless internet. The local laundromat is one block away, although we can do a small load for you in moderation.

We have two adult mountain bikes and one kid sized bike (roughly age 7-10) free to use on the Brooklyn Greenway bike path that runs through Red Hook. The Greenway starts in Greenpoint, down through the Brooklyn Bridge Park and ends in Sunset Park. Farther south you can pick up the bike path to Coney Island under the Verrazano Bridge.

Interaction with Guests

Pete, Sharon, and Gus live upstairs and are always available to answer questions, and provide recommendations for places and restaurants to visit in hip, artistic Red Hook, or give transportation options.

If we're around (Pete typically works from home), we'd be more than happy to drive you to the subway.

Lovely place, great neighbourhood

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the appartment and Red Hook. The appartment is cozy and clean, the neighbourhood is great, with good places to eat and drink. Red Hook is also awesome to go running and have wonderful view of the Statue of Liberty.

Lower Manhattan is really close with the Ikea Express (free on weekends!) and it's a pleasant walk to Brooklyn Heights Promenade.

We would totally recommend this lovely spot! Thank you very much!

We had a great time!

  • 4 of 5

The apartment has been perfect for the three of us. It was nice and clean and is well equipped with kitchen devices etc. As others have reviewed before the bathroom is quite small. However, it is okay as you normally don't spend your day in the bathroom ;)

There are some restaurants, cafés and little shops down the street as well as a supermarket (selling many organic products) and IKEA (15 min walk). We recommend "Baked" for coffee and pastries.

Thanks to the bus and metro it didn't take us long to get to Manhattan. However, after a busy day in noisy NYC we were happy to come back to the quiet apartment and rest.

Pete and Sharon are really kind and took every effort to make us feel at home. Whenever, we needed something they were happy to help. We would definitely stay there again :)

Great place in Red Hook, Brooklyn

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay in New York and we are really glad that we chose Pete and Sharon's place in the nice and quiet Red Hook! The place was clean and well equipped and there was plenty of room for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. The area Red Hook is very interesting. Many restaurants/shops and close to the water front. We enjoyed taking the IKEA water taxi from the end of the street to downtown Manhatten and shopping in the lovely Fairway supermarket close by. Public transportation from Red Hook is very easy. The bus stop is right outside the door and the bus takes you to downtown Brooklyn and the metro in no time. We would definitely stay here again!

Great location and price!

  • 4 of 5

This place was perfect! It was all we needed in a place to stay on vacation; clean and affordable! Red Hook had a unique atmosphere and this place reflected that fun feeling. The only downside was the bathroom shall I say is "petite!" Especially being 7 months pregnant at the time, it was very difficult to get into the shower and to the toilet without feeling cramped. However I would definitely go back to this place again! It is the best location for getting to and from NYC easily. Bus stations were very close and was only about a 10 ride to subways. Thanks for a great vacation!

Perfect homebase

  • 5 of 5

We had a blast staying here-- it suited our lifestyle perfectly, and we were really proud of ourselves for mastering the public transit system. Pete and Sharon thought of everything--the apartment was clean and artfully-appointed with the extra touch that makes a place special. Red Hook is a wonderful little community in its own right, and also makes a great homebase for exploring the city. We would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Angie and her friend, in town to deliver a painting commission (go Angie!) were cheerful, friendly guests. They were very flexible when they arrived early and we hadn't quite finished getting the apartment ready for them, and went out for a bite while I finished. They were quiet and left the space clean and tidy. Great communication beforehand too. We would recommend them to any hosts.

Owner's Response: Bree and her fiance Casey, visiting from Arkansas, were thoughtful, flexible and considerate guests. They had a local friend show them around the neighborhood, and I think they had a great stay. They left the apartment in immaculate condition, and I would recommend them to other hosts without reservation.
