ABOUT THE AREA: You will want to spend several days in beautiful Ouray County. Ouray, which is known as the "Switzerland of America," is nestled in a small valley with 360-degree views of 12,000-14,000 mountains. Ridgway, nicknamed the "Gateway to the San Juans," is just 10 miles from Ouray and is well-known as the place where the John Wayne movie "True Grit" was filmed. Many of the movie set's buildings are still used today by local businesses. These two historic towns offer a variety of activities: restaurants, shops, museums, galleries, hot springs pools, jeep rentals, hiking, fishing and boating -- the list goes on and on! Day trips to Silverton, Telluride and Durango are fun as well.
Ouray is also often called "The Jeeping Capital of the World" because of its many trails through the high country (rated easy to rugged), popular for 2-wheel and 4-wheel off road vehicles.
Golf is available at beautiful Divide Ranch Golf Club located on Log Hill Mesa just above Ridgway, offering panoramic mountain views. Telluride and Montrose also have golf courses.
Ouray and Ridgway both offer local markets, and you can find larger stores like City Market, Safeway, Target and Walmart in Montrose, a flat, easy drive 35 miles from Ouray, 25 miles from Ridgway.
No matter how long you decide to stay, you will find yourself wanting to come back again and again to Ouray County, one of the most beautiful places on earth!
We made a quick stop in Ouray to hit the Jeep trails. Our arrival was a little bumpy (the address is a little confusing, a home owner had to let us know we were at the wrong house). Then one neighbor came down to express his displeasure with us, while the other neighbors dog barked until they got home.
The house was great, location was great.
The house was much nicer than the listing portrayed. Everyone was in awe! The property was very clean and well maintained. The owner of the property provided many of the essentials in the kitchen (including dish/cookware/utensils/ spices/ etc.). The bathrooms were clean and well maintained. I would recommend this property to my friends and other family members. Members of my extended family joined me on this trip, and they were in awe of the house (lots of surprises). We loved all the attractions / restaurants in Ouray. Especially loved the shopping and hiking. We were sad when it came time to leave. Thank you for the wonderful experience!!! We will be doing this again.
We absolutely adored this house. The renters provided everything anyone could possibly need for our stay although we were a bit disappointed when we didn't have access to the garage being that this is bear country. Even if you don't leave this location you would have plenty to occupy your time due to the bountiful abundance of wildlife in the area. One morning we woke up to 4 doe using our driveway as a freeway, Another day we observed a fox on the hunt, and hummingbirds were everywhere. Defiantly would recommend for large parties. We had 11 in our group and didn't feel like we were constantly on top of one another. The veiws from this property were stunning. We never grew tired of watching the moon every night which illuminated the mountains to the south.
This home wrapped around our family and made our first family vacation together an awesome experience. The chef in our family enjoyed the gourmet kitchen and we had some amazing conversations on the decks. Stunning views from every window! The beds were very comfy and it was nice to have each family on their own floor for their own family time. Ouray has always been one of our favorite towns and this house raised our visit here up several notches. We will definitely come back again.
I hesitate to do a review of this great house because I don't want everyone to know about it so we'll be able to use it again and not have to fight to get it. It slept all 12 of us comfortably and we didn't feel like we were on top of each other. It was very clean and felt so secluded even though cabins were close by. The views out the windows were magnificent and it was so relaxing sitting on the deck. Thank you for sharing it with us!
