About Carol

We've been Mainers for more than 30 years, although the locals still consider us 'from away'. We are a retired teacher and marine biologist. We look forward to welcoming guests to our apartment, where we lived while building our new home next door. Carol, a retired teacher, looks forward each summer to working in the gardens that surround the house and welcoming guests. Rick is a research scientist at the UMaine Darling Marine Center. We'll stay behind the scenes but welcome questions about the area. You'll be invited to join us at the fire pit whenever we have it going in the evening.

Carol purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Carol chose Round Pond

The barn is a reconstruction of an early 1850's post and beam parish house once located in Bristol Mills. It was removed to make way for a new parish house around 2008, so Rick and Carol purchased the timbers and sheathing for their own barn. Some windows and interior doors were salvaged from our on site 1875 Victorian home which burned in 2011. We've created a comfortable apartment that reflects an earlier time when the pace of life was slower. Gently used vintage furnishings create a warm, inviting environment.

What makes this apartment unique

A 5 minute walk from Round Pond Harbor, an active lobster fishing and sailing harbor. Walk to fine dining or lobster in the rough. If you like exploring the woods and fields, there are trails right out the back door. You could see river otters frolicking in the stream, a rookery of great blue herons in the swamp, or deer grazing in the fields. Not up for the wilderness, take a walk to Bass Rock Preserve and meditate while the waves gently lap at your feet. We do not have waterfront, but that doesn't diminish the beauty of the setting.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your place was truly amazing. Even though the purpose of this trip was to take a class, staying at your place made me feel like I was on vacation. I love the way you decorated the place, every aspect of your house is so beautiful. It's a true reflection of how warm and inviting the both of you are I hope I can make it back again!

A perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

I read all the good reviews about the Barn at Round Pond and thought how could a place be so great --- You Guys - it is! Book it! It's so calming, and open and laid back but with all the comforts you could need. And granite countertops. Our hosts were so kind and accommodating, and every bit of the small towns nearby were gorgeous and the shopowners and people equally kind. We're already discussing a trip back. One of my best VRBO and travel experiences to date. Thank you, Carol!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your glowing review. We enjoyed meeting and getting to know you. We hope to see you again for a longer stay. Just to clarify about the counter tops - glad you thought they were granite, but really they're Corian salvaged from our previous home that burned.

Peace and quiet, pretty drive to town.

  • 5 of 5

We booked the barn at Round Pond for two nights but wish it would have been longer....next time! So quiet and peaceful, and Carol had some lovely wine, cheese, and crisp apples waiting for us on arrival. The loft is so warm and inviting, there is no TV but we didn't even notice.....Carol has several books with the local history that we enjoyed reading at night. Comfortable furnishings and a wonderful shower.....we enjoyed every minute. Visit the town of Damariscotta while there and the Pemaquid lighthouse. Thanks Carol and Che for a lovely stay!

Rustic home in a charming village

  • 5 of 5

We had a delightful stay in this rustic apartment in the charming village of Round Pond. The place is just the right size for two and has everything to meet your needs. The barn is attached to the owner’s home on Rt. 32, but is in the back and quite private. Carol has a lovely garden behind the house and there is a trail for hiking. The Barn is an easy walk to the village of Round Pond, where you’ll find a general store, café, restaurant, lobster pier, gift shop, and best of all, the harbor itself. We enjoyed our conversations with the wonderful owners, Carol and Rick, and hope to return.

Perfect cozy base for exploring midcoast Maine

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful, relaxing stay in this airy, comfy loft on the edge of the charming village of Round Pond. It was a pleasure meeting Carol and Rick, who achieved a perfect balance of discretion and friendly hospitality. We could easily have stayed longer to take advantage of all there is to see and do in the area while having more time just to relax back at the apartment or explore the trails right from the property. This was our favorite place during our Maine road trip. A couple of practical remarks: there's only a very basic grocery store in Round Pond (the wonderful Granite Hall General Store doesn't have food other than candy and ice cream) so we were glad we arrived with some staples and farm-stand produce to be able to cook our first night. As for Wifi, we were unable to pick up a proper signal from inside the flat on any of our devices and had to go downstairs and outside to get Internet. There is also no cellphone reception. But that can be a good thing...

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments, Amy. We enjoyed meeting you and your husband. I'm glad you enjoyed the peace and quiet of our bit of paradise. As for the Wifi signal, while our little village doesn't have a strong signal, most of our guests have been successful using their devices in the apartment. I'm wondering whether your carrier just didn't reach here. As for groceries, I believe I make the scarce availability clear in my welcome letter to our guests when I recommend stopping in Damariscotta for groceries before arriving in Round Pond.

Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our stay at The Barn at Round Pond was perfectly idyllic. The barn is exquisite, beautifully furnished with all that you need and more. Carol and Rick are lovely, warm, genuine hosts. The location is perfectly situated for a true Maine experience: day trips to the beach, Boothbay Harbor botanical gardens, Pemaquid Point with its lighthouse and picturesque Maine coast, New Harbor with the ferry to Monhegan, Damariscotta's restaurants and fish market, Wiscasset's art galleries, Christmas Cove. Our personal favorites in the little village of Round Pond were the Granite Hall Store and Mondays at the King Ro store for music by local musicians. Just a wonderful experience! We would love to come back. Many thanks. Susan and Bill

Comfortable & Charming

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted with our stay at The Barn at Round Pond. Carol, Rick, and Che were terrific hosts, and welcomed us warmly to their barn loft. The apartment is spacious, quiet, clean, and well appointed. Super short walking distance to Round Pond's coffee shop, local market, lobster place, and ice cream parlor; and easy drive for groceries, lighthouses, and all those other Maine attractions you'll want to enjoy. We selected this property since our extended family was beginning to spill out of a nearby house, and we would absolutely come back to the barn for next time.
