1812 Cottages are historic cottages in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake with all the conveniences of home, thus our motto ... Historic Vacation Cottages (with Newfangled Conveniences).
The Swayze cottage is named because of it's location beside the Angel Inn. There a historic ghost story of Captain Swayze who died in the Inn in during the War of 1812 and the cottage is on the grounds of his fiance. Enjoy all the conveniences of being in historic old town, while maintaining isolation and serenity.
We have been coming to NOTL each year for a weekend getaway for the past 17 years and each time have stayed at Swayze's cottage. The cottage is in a great location and within easy reach of all amenities. The cottage is clean, well maintained and well appointed and we could not imagine staying anywhere else when we visit NOTL, however this year I was surprised by the significant increase in the price. Last year I paid a total of C$680 for a 2 night stay, this year our 2 night stay was C$900. I thought this may have been as a result of exchange rate fluctuations but on checking found that the exchange rate was pretty much the same.
As usual we had a wonderful time in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The sun and the rain just brightened the community for all. The Swayze Cottage makes the visit even more enjoyable. Let me tell you why. You can park your car and walk everywhere, you can sit on the porch with whatever you are drinking and watch the visitors, you can stay out of the rain in a pleasant cozy cottage, sleep well in the beds above and dress in 1812 uniforms for fun photos.
Swayze Cottage is a perfect cottage in the perfect location to see all that Niagara on the Lake has to offer. A short walk to the old downtown with all the wonderful restaurants, superb ice cream stores and unique shops. Yet a block off the main street so it was a quiet and peaceful retreat after the heat and crowds of our busy days. The cottage has a colourful past, is tastefully decorated, clean and well cared for. There are lush gardens and ample outdoor seating areas too. It is part of the beautiful historical architecture that makes Niagara on the Lake such a great place to walk the neighbourhoods and admire the cottages and mansions. It is a good central location for driving to wineries, botanical gardens, walking trails, fruit stalls the falls and many historical sites in the Niagara area.
We would recommend the following activities: do a week long compare and contract of the many kinds of ice cream and gelato up and down Queen Street, have an authentic Italian pizza at Piete Pizza, go for a walk exploring the NPS botantical garden in the evening, take a guided and very informative tour of the McKenzie Printery museum and enjoy a different kind of wine every night with dinner. NOTLand Swayze cottage is a perfect place for a week of exploring near and far.
This was our 2nd time in Swayze Cottage and we'll return again next year. We stay for a week which lets us feel we have a home in Niagara On The Lake. It has wood floors and various British-like touches just as the village has. The furniture is comfortable livable and the kitchen is easy to maneuver in. This year we were surprised and happy to find an ice maker and new doors to the side porch and dive way. There is WIFI available is you need to do some work, but why would you? It's an ideal place for escape.
The Swayze cottage had all the convinces of home. It was very clean and comfortable. The owners are very accommodating and easy to deal with. Thank yo John and Loraine for providing a 5 star resort. See you next year.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is the original Capital of Upper Canada from 1792 to 1797. Nestled along the shores of the Niagara River and Lake Ontario, we hold the distinction of being the only municipality in Canada whose elected head holds the title of Lord Mayor.
Each year millions of people from around the world travel here to experience our Town’s unique charm and historic sites, including Fort George and Brock’s Monument; period-restored heritage homes, top-flight golf courses, breath-taking parks and gardens, as well as over 30 wineries and countless vineyards, many of which produce our world-class ice wine.
In 2012 we launched the 200th commemoration of the War of 1812. Last from 1812 to 1814, and was the only time any country invaded Canada. in 1814, the Town’s Bicentennial Committee will continue to host a range of historical re-enactments and special events dedicated to our role as a major battle site leading to the creation of modern-day Canada.
We hope you will enjoy our Old Town shopping district, which boasts of a number of quaint shops, boutiques and restaurants, fine hotels, spas and bed & breakfast establishments, as well as public and private art galleries, the centuries-old Court House, museums, and of course, the renowned Shaw Festival Theatre.
