Perfect Vacation Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My three friends and I stayed at Casa Andy for ten days. The house was amazing- right on the ocean, kitchen equipped with everything we needed, AC in the bedrooms meant peaceful sleeping, and the pool was a refreshing change of pace when you tire from your private beach access and ocean swimming. We watched the sunsets from the beach every night and enjoyed snorkeling (snorkels available at the house) during the day. The house itself is tucked away from the crowds of tourism but close enough to town to access everything you need. There is a grocery store five minutes away and plenty of places to surf and dine up and down the coast within 15 minutes. I recommend finding Lola's on Playa Avellanas. There are lots of small towns in this area and they are all worth exploring to experience the local culture. Go adventuring and you might happen upon a rodeo as we did.

The property caretaker, Magally, was very helpful and was the perfect host in that she was there when we needed her but in no way intruded on the privacy of our stay. After asking for recommendations on local food, she offered to cook us a typical Costa Rican dish, chifrijo, for just the cost of the ingredients. It was delicious and we enjoyed eating it poolside as we looked out over the ocean. The owners of the property, Laura and Bob, are also extremely kind and helpful. They want you to enjoy their home as if you are family.

Casa Andy is very spacious and secure. The location, privacy, and views are unbeatable. I recommend staying here if you want an amazing hidden gem that will leave you pining for just one more day of vacation.

Severely disappointed while staying at this property. Nearby restaurants weren't opened and the nearby hotel was recently closed. Hosts were not helpful.

Unsafe at Casa Andy

  • 1 of 5

We were robbed while staying at Casa Andy. Doors were dead bolted and gates were locked. Not a safe place to stay.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry that this incident happened to guests staying at our house. In discussion by telephone post-incident, the guest said he was unsure if the doors at the point of entry were locked. When we inspected the doors and locks we found no signs of damage or forced entry. Our caretaker reminded this guest 3 times to lock up after she found the house left unlocked when the guests were away from the property. It's a bit like leaving an unlocked vehicle in a public parking lot. Sooner or later, opportunists will take advantage. Tourists must take precautions for their security when travelling anywhere in the world.

Absolutely spectacular

  • 5 of 5

I had the pleasure of staying at Casa Andy for a week and a half and it was absolutely perfect. I should start off this review by saying that I've had extensive travel experience and have been very fortunate to see a great deal of the world for both work and pleasure, and am not exaggerating when I say that I have NEVER felt more relaxed in my entire life. Casa Andy was our own personal paradise. The house offers absolutely everything and gives you the comfort and feeling of being at home... the location has so much to offer if you want to explore any of the surrounding towns or take a quick trip to Tamarindo. Renting a car was easy and really affordable, and I loved the freedom we had to explore and experience the Costa Rican culture! (When we were there, we hopped from beach to beach [* although we never got tired of our own private beach front! We watched the sunset every night and snorkelled everyday!] took private surfing lessons, made friends with some local surf instructors, and even caught a carnival and rodeo one night!)

I can't wait to get back to Casa Andy. I rarely plan on returning somewhere (before going on another trip) because I enjoy seeing the world so much... not this time! My trip is already booked for next April! Loved it and would recommend it to absolutely EVERYONE!

Best Vacation Ever!

  • 5 of 5

After hopping all over Costa Rica on an action packed tour of National parks, rainforests, and vocanoes, we wanted to find a peaceful and secluded spot on the Pacific ocean to rest and relax for our final week in CR. We chose Casa Andy for its close proximity to Tamarindo, beach front location, infinity pool, and snorkeling opportunities. We shared the house with my brother and his wife, as well as a few nights with our 15 year old son.

Casa Andy exceeded our expectations with spectacular views of the ocean, lots of wildlife to observe - especially butterflies and birds, lovely gardens, and a kitchen containing every amenity we needed. We grilled dinner and ate outside nearly every night. The house was very clean, spacious, and comfortable. We felt at home from the moment we arrived. Every morning we combed the beaches and rocks from Playa Blanca to Playa Junquillal returning for a cool dip in the pool before an afternoon snooze on the terrace. On our final beach day, we snorkeled and saw many beautiful fish and other marine life. The sunsets here are amazing, no two are alike so enjoy them every night. We recommend the vista view from Sunset Point, a very short drive or walk from the house.

Laura and Magally shared many helpful suggestions on restaurants and sightseeing opportunities. Laura recommended a day trip to Diria National Park to see the Blue Morpho butterflies which we throughly enjoyed - note, a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required to ford the streams. Magally cooked our Sunday meal which was wonderful - highly recommend having her cook at least one meal while staying here. We enjoyed getting to know Laura and Magally, as well as other local artists and residents whom they introduced to us. By the end of the week we felt like they were part of the family and made our visit even more enjoyable. We look forward to hopefully returning for a longer stay in the future. We definitely found our paradise at Casa Andy!

Would not recommend staying here

  • 1 of 5

After the paved highway ends you have another 4 kms on a very poorly maintained dirt road until you arrive at the house. Large potholes, wash outs and lots of sad stray dogs along the road. You have to use this road every time you want to go anywhere.

Lots of wildlife especially, in the house! Ants on the walls, floors, counters and bed, barking geckos that wake you up in the night regularly(owner did offer ear plugs for those),a couple of wasps in and out of an unused cable outlet and and a scorpion! Too bad the scorpion was in the bed and stung a member of our group on his back.

Came back to the house on a couple of nights and it smelled like a forest fire due to the owners burning yard debris outside the house. We could have closed the windows, but the main living room, dining, kitchen area does not have AC. Plus, we never thought we would have to put up with 3 days of debris being burned while on vacation. It was about 90 degrees plus the day they had the septic tank flushed. That was not really pleasant, as one could imagine.

Came back one evening and the owners were eating dinner on our back patio. They apologized and went back to the guest house where they were staying.

There were new locks on the safes which was nice, since the owner informed us when we got there that another group had $300 and a laptop stolen from the house. This happened a few weeks before we arrived.

Housekeeping for our 11 day stay was getting our clothes washed once. The inside was never cleaned nor were the sheets. Part of our group had to leave early due to a death in the family. They did wash those sheets, but did not want to give them back, because they wanted to keep them clean for the next group, but we still had five more nights at the house. After sensing our displeasure over the not getting the sheets back(which meant we could only use one room), we did finally got the sheets back.

There was a base for a phone, but the phone was keep at the guest house.

The area is beautiful, but there are lots of other places to stay close by and would not recommend staying here.

Guess the owners thought we would not mind a working vacation. Too bad it was the owners working that ruined our vacation.

Owner's Response: We were surprised by your review comments for this stay at Casa Andy. It is troubling to us how these comments differ so much from your previous review in 2014, "we had a fantastic time at Casa Andy... Casa Andy and Junquillal Beach are our cup of tea. We are very laid back, love nature, and try not to stress over unimportant things. We will definitely be back to stay at Casa Andy..." And further, during your stay you communicated to us that your were having a wonderful time before your friends had to leave due to a family emergency. Also, it was discussed and understood at the time of booking that the owners would be on site doing some annual maintenance and improvements. You were given a substantial rental discount for any inconveniences, and further agreed to do the housekeeping yourselves to help manage your budget. We do our best to provide a memorable time for all who stay at Casa Andy. We are sincerely sorry you were unable to leave Costa Rica this time with a Pura Vida experience.
