My wife and I have a young family and we have been visiting the Hawaiian islands for almost a decade to escape the cold winters (and even the cool summers) of the Pacific Northwest. We are both competitive athletes and have done dozens of marathons and triathlons all over the world including Ironman distance races. In fact, we first found the Fairways at Mauna Lani racing the Honu 70.3.
We have 2 young children and enjoy traveling anywhere we can enjoy good food, good weather, different cultures - and still play in the outdoors.
Jeff and Sonia purchased this townhome in 2014
We found ourselves returning to Mauna Lani more than any place else in the tropics. What we love most about Mauna Lani is that it offers privacy away from the crowds elsewhere yet offers the convenience of close by restaurants and shops when you want them. It has beautiful calm waters for safe snorkeling, waves (when you want them) for surfing, and nature abounds with the turtles, coral reef, dolphin and whale sightings. There are miles of running and cycling right out the door.
We stayed at other properties within Mauna Lani but feel that the grounds, large free form pool, spa and location of the Fairways are the perfect combination of private yet convenient to the amenities of the rest of the resort as it is close enough to walk to the Fairmont Orchid and Shops of Mauna Lani.
We chose Hale O' Honu'ea because of all the floorplans we've stayed in Mauna Lani, it suits our family and friends the best. All bedrooms are upstairs which makes us feel safe; the bedrooms are on opposite ends of the townhome so they feel private; each has it's own ensuite bathroom for convenience; the open floor plan of the main living space and windows on the upper floor allow the island breeze to move through.
We've made updates to make it even more comfortable and hope that you will enjoy it as much as we do.
Our daughter named 'Hale O' Honu'ea', Home of the Hawksbill Turtle. In conjunction with Oahu's Sea Life Park, Mauna Lani Resort raises honu (the green sea turtle) releases them when mature, helping the comeback of honu. The native Hawksbill turtle, or Honu'ea, is more endangered and the Big Island is one of it's few nesting places. Our family hopes someday to see the Honu'ea frequenting the waters of Mauna Lani too.
We are transitioning to our condo to be more 'green'. We've installed ceiling fans and screens to enjoy the island breeze. We provide personal amenity dispensers that reduce plastic bottle waste of typical hotel 'travel size' products. We are converting to CFL and LED lighting. We've chosen BPA-free acrylics for outdoor drinkware. We provide environmentally responsible detergents and will continue to transition to like products throughout Hale O' Honu'ea. We admit that we have far to go, but we feel these small steps are all in the right direction to protect the natural beauty of this special place.
We enjoyed our stay and appreciate the child friendly touches. Jeff and Sonia were great to work with and we would stay there again.
Hale O' Honu'ea was an absolute highlight to our Big Island adventure. The owners are the best we have ever worked with and truly showed their love of the Island. When I asked a question...Sonia followed up with not just a one liner, but a page on best places to shop! She helped me in figuring out great places to go with some of our family's dietary restrictions. They also allowed us to mail some dietary foods early and it was there at arrival Very easy to work with and quick to respond. This is the number one thing that sold us on this condo! The pictures do not do justice as to how beautiful the condo really is, either! We walked in and everyone was totally delighted in the beauty, spaciousness, and comfort of the condo. The turtle/ocean theme is displayed throughout the home with beautiful accenting that begged us to learn more about area turtle.! Our teen girls LOVED having a room with twin double beds, vs. the standard twin beds. They retired to their rooms early most nights to enjoy winding down with their own TV. Our room was beautiful & spacious. We didn't used the futon/daybed space for bedding, but it was great for space! We tended to hang out on the lanai off that space.. beautiful views. The shower was absolutely a highlight to our stay...it was relaxing and had great water pressure to remove all the surf & sand of the day. The Jacuzzi tub was great. The kitchen was beyond expectations with everything we needed for cooking as well as an amazing grill area off the deck. They provided everything for the beach you could imagine...beach toys, boogie boards (these were used ALOT!!!), large sun umbrellas, beach towels, etc. The pool area was relaxing, inviting, and was never very busy. The shops are close by and we had fun browsing there. The beach club is wonderful to play and leisurely walk through. We will return and highly recommend this condo to couples, families, and anyone wanting a relaxing place to stay! Five Stars... we also loved some of the tips in seeking our sea turtles. It was the highlight of our trip!
My husband, 2 boys (ages 6 & 8), and myself traveled to Hawaii just before Christmas for a one-week stay. Before booking lodging, Sonia provided detailed information on the layout of the house and nearby activities/restaurants/shops/things-to-do. She made the decision very easy about where to stay!
Ahead of our travel date, Sonia provided a list of available amenities, which was incredibly helpful (so we knew what NOT to pack!). And the amenities made the stay so easy! Boogie boards, beach bags, towels, chairs, and even shampoo, conditioner, and bath soap (for adults or for kids)! We cooked breakfast every day in the house, and about half the lunches and dinners as well -- the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed.
The house was clean and everything was well taken care of. The single car garage was a great "mud room" to shake off all the sand from the day and leave our wet things to dry.
The location of the property was wonderful. We enjoyed the beach club (access only for those staying in Mauna Lani) -- it was the best sheltered snorkeling and sand play we found for our two boys. We used the site's pool and hot tub several times. The nearby shops and restaurants were great. We went to the Mauna Lani 3D movie a few times (Sonia provided a set of free tickets). And we watched the nighttime show at the nearby shops as well - super fun for the family! It wasn't far to travel to Kailua Kona, and even closer to visit Hapuna Beach, which had the best swimming and boogie boarding. We also did a day trips to Mauna Kea and the volcano national park.
I'd highly recommend this location. You'll be well taken care of and enjoy your stay very much!
Before I discuss about the property I would like to comment on how great Sonia the property owner has been, from my initial contact she was always very responsive, would get back in a timely manner and was also very nice to deal with. The house was very clean and well kept, we felt like we were at home, the property had all the necessary amenities and more. I would highly recommend this property to anyone, not only because it’s a great property but the owner Sonia is an amazing person with a big heart.
We were so lucky to be able to book and stay this house during the ironman weekend! The time we arrived the house, everyone of us, especially our three boys, all saying 'WOW'! It is a perfect vacation house for five of us. Everything in the house is clean, more importantly, everything was prepared with care and love, every small things, like the bench at the front door, full stock of supplies in kitchen, bathroom, utility room, etc. toys in garage, ... All of us feel relaxed and home away from home. We had wonderful time staying there. Interestingly, our oldest left his eyesight correction contacts in the house while we arrived in Honolulu. We were all in panic moment. I called Sonia at her 3am time and felt bad to disturb her sleep but she actually answered the phone and provided a solution. After 3-4 rounds of phone/email conversation next morning, she managed to mail the contacts by FedEx and arrived in our hotel on the same day. We can't thank her enough for this BIG help!
Again, highly recommend the house and knew a wonderful owner/person without meeting her in person.
Exceptionally clean home which is very important to our family. Ample kitchen supplies, beach towels and tons of beach/pool toys. Having full sized laundry detergent & dryer sheets (even stain remover) dishwasher soap and bathroom supplies (TP, soap, shampoo & conditioner) is a nice perk and of course environmentally friendly. The pool is beautiful, huge and is very warm which made night swimming very fun! The beach club is great! The bay is protected and offers very clear snorkeling and safe swimming.
The owners were very helpful, kind and quick to respond to any questions. It is clear they want to ensure anyone staying in their home has a great time!!
