About William Schwitzer
We have more than 25 years experience of renting holiday accommodation at Lake Orta, we know all our apartments and the local area intimately. We believe in Lake Orta as an absolutely wonderful holiday destination, and our aim is to share our love of Lake Orta with you.
Why William Schwitzer chose Ameno
Villa Gelsomina is unique in that we built it ourselves as holiday rental accommodation, based on our understanding of what holidaymakers need, from our many years experience of renting holiday apartments. The attention to details shows, as many of you have commented. The villa is very comfortable, stylish, with quality fittings, furnishings, bedding and linen. We are touched that so many of you choose to come back to Lake Orta, the record is currently held by a Scottish couple who have stayed with us 11 times.
What makes this Apartment unique
The views from Villa Gelsomina are absolutely stunning, and it is almost impossible to convey the impression the commanding and unrestricted views of the lake make, full of multiple points of interest. There are several beautiful photos of the views on this entry and elsewhere in different light conditions, but nothing will prepare you for the real thing. Every day is different. Every sunset is different. Dawn is an unbelievable spectacle you must set the alarm for at least once. And when you open the shutters in the morning... wow!!

Nice apartment with lovely big pool and truly fantastic view
We stayed at Villa Gelsomina for one week in August 2017. Our two girls loved the pool which was large and clean, with amazing views onto Lake Orta. The apartment is simple but perfectly clean and is equipped with all the usual cooking essentials. The grounds are very well kept. There are about 5 other apartments in the mini complex, all the other guests when we stayed there were very nice and friendly. The wifi is not reliable at all so if you're planning to use it for heavy duty use, such as streaming video, then forget it. There are a lot of mosquitoes in the evening so you definitely need to take Jungle Formula or similar and use the smoke spirals. We did mention to William that he should perhaps install mosquito screens internally so that you can sleep with the windows/doors open, hopefully he may get this done in the future. That, or aircon, would be a welcome addition.
You really do need a car to get out and about, however there is one restaurant a short walk away in Lortallo. There are numerous really good beaches to try. We liked Spiaggia Miami (the closest, but don't follow Google Maps to get there!); Spiaggia Gozzano just south of Miami, it has a good restaurant (best pizza we had in Italy) and big platform with diving board; and the small, private beach next to the Luci sul Lago restaurant on the road heading north out of Orta San Giulio.
Isola San Giulio was lovely and worth a visit, as was Pella. One day we took a trip to Alpyland where you can ride a luge on rails down the hill and you get fantastic views of Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta.
A quick tip: don't pay with PayPal as extra fees are subsequently deducted from your deposit.
We would highly recommend this apartment, it was just what we hoped it would be and William was very helpful.
Amazing 2 weeks stay in Ciao Italia in August 2013
We stayed as a family of 4 in this wonderful villa. The view of Villa Gelsomina is absolutely breath taking. The villa itself was absolutely perfect for us. William's booklet made everything so easy specially the restaurants and icecream places! We truly recommend this place to anyone who wants peace and quiet and beautiful view of the lake. The beach is in walking distance and easy to access with or without a car. We are definitely going back to visit next year!! Thanks for everything william:)
We are delighted you had an enjoyable stay!
Italy's best kept secret
We've just returned from a wonderful holiday at Lake Orta and really don't want to write a review as it might tempt other people to go so it won't be a secret any more! The apartments are lovely and have everything you need for a relaxing family holiday. The views from the pool and patio are amazing and it takes a lot of will power to tear yourself away to explore. There's lots to do if you can tear yourself away, with plenty of places to eat within a few minutes drive. Not only were we impressed by the 'un-touristy' nature of the area but also the prices which were much more reasonable than we expected.
We'll definitely be coming back as this must be one of the best spots on the lake.
Fabulous Property and Location
We have just returned from an amazing week at Lake Orta. The apartments are well designed and full equipped, the owner has taken a lot of time ensuring that every requirement is catered for - right down to providing books, games, DVDs etc for both children and adults alike. The pool and its surrounding area and gardens were particularly delightful, especially as we had such beautiful weather for the whole week we spent at the property. This area of Italy is really beautiful and there are many places to visit and lots of good, reasonably priced restaurants to choose to eat out in. It is a much slower, more relaxed, very Italian pace here compared to the mass tourism of the bigger lakes such as Como and Garda. We will definitely return as we did not have long enough to do all the things we wanted in the week. The owner provided a lot of good information on various places to visit and things to do and we managed a few things but would like to come back and do a few others. One of the best activities are the walks available from the property - none of them are particularly difficult and all are suitable for children, I think the longest was around 3 hours return, although we would recommend good trainers or walking shoes for summer and possibly hiking boots for winter, as a lot of it was in wooded areas with trails which could be slippery in wet weather. The owner was very helpful and came and introduced himself personally to us on the day we arrived. He took a lot of time helping us out with finding a pharmacy to get medication for our son who developed an ear infection whilst we were at the villa and for that we are most grateful. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for him or the Italian local people who work for him.
A lovely villa in a great location.
We had a wonderful two weeks in this well designed and attractive apartment. The views from the terrace are beautiful and the area is very tranquil. It is a superb base for the wide range of activities in the region and there are many good restaurants within easy reach. The owner was extremely helpful and appeared genuinely concerned that we had a good time. This was definitely one of the best holidays we have had and we would recommend Vill Gelsimona without hesitation.
We had an absolutely outstanding time at Villa Gelsomina. We had booked all 5 appartments as we were having our wedding in the nearby village of Orta San Giulio. The villa have an outstanding location and one of the best views we have ever experienced. All appartments were immaculately well prepared before our arrival and all excellently equipped.
We would definetely recommend staying at Villa Gelsomina, and expect that we will be back sometime in the future for a few of tour wedding anniversaries.
Villa Gelsomina is just 3km from the lakeside village of Orta San Giulio, where there are mouth-watering restaurants, cafes, pizzerias, trattorias and gelaterias (particularly good!) catering for all tastes and ages. There is also a great local restaurant in walking distance (400m). Many wonderful day trips can be made in the area, at Lake Orta, Lake Maggiore, and in the mountains. We provide descriptions of a series of favourite local walks, most of which start from your front door! Great beach with all facilities (sunbeds, pedalos, canoes, cafe etc.) at Miami at the south end of the lake, lots of other places to swim. Boat trips on Lake Orta, rowing boats for hire at Orta San Giulio. 1 hour's drive from Milan, just 90 minutes from Turin. Skiing locally on the Mottarone, Val Vigezzo, or Macugnaga.
